Persons With ‘ Different’ Abilities – Social Discrimination

Dear Friend,

Since 1992, after the end of observing a decade for disabled persons(1983 -1992) , every year, December 3 is being celebrated as ‘ international day of disabled persons’ and many events felicitating disabled persons has become common in India as in other countries. The disabled day is an occasion to assert their presence socially and politically braving every form of discrimination.

The U.S. president, Donald Trump, revealed his inner nature again earlier this week when he retweeted a series of anti-Muslim propaganda videos from the deputy leader of an ultranationalist, neo-fascist hate group in the UK. The encouraging news is that Trump’s fear and hate mongering against Islam and Muslims is increasingly being denounced by a wider spectrum of individuals and groups, including many staunch conservatives, both in the U.S. and abroad. The ground swell of resistance is steadily growing.

Also more stories from around the world.

Thomas Friedman’s Whitewashing Of The Dark Saudi Kingdom
by Taj Hashmi

After reading his latest column in the New York Times, “Saudi Arabia’s Arab Spring, at Last: The crown prince has big plans for his society” (Nov 23, 2017), I have mixed feelings about this op-ed piece. While on the one hand, it reads like a piece by a biased and ill-informed journalist; on the other, what he has mentioned is better than what he has deliberately hidden, as he has inadvertently revealed a lot about the ongoing chaos in the Kingdom.

How Significant Was Federalism To The Creation Of Pakistan?
by Sabarish Suresh

One wonders whether things would have been different if the Congress were to accommodate the possibility of having a stronger federal character with residuary power titled in the favour of the provinces than the Centre. Needless to say, this is not something that is an outdated controversy, for states still contest with the Centre for excessive abuse of federal powers.

Preparing For The Future
by Sally Dugman

Currently I’m trying to set up transition towns in MA. I shared. They will be needed not during my time on Earth. I know that, but my eye is on times past mine. So one does whatever he or she can for future people.

The Politics Of Eviction In Assam
by Parvin Sultana

A year back the newly elected government in Assam started an eviction drive to free government land of illegal encroachers. While it started with Kaziranga, very soon such drives were carried out all over the state. The government initiative led to a mixed response from people. While many hailed it as a required initiative to save forest land and ensure land does not pass to the hands of outsiders, a large number of people felt deprived of their basic right to shelter. Irrespective of the question of legality, the eviction drive left a trail of homelessness.

Understanding Kumar Vishwas’s Anti Reservation Rhetorics
by Vidya Bhushan Rawat

Aam Admi Party leader Kumar Vishwas’s video of blaming ‘reservation’ in jobs for ‘destroying’ his age old ‘sanskriti’ is in the air. Actually the full video is about 45 minutes and is available on youtube. I thought to watch it to understand fully what he wanted to say. It is clear that Aam Admi Party’s foundations are shaky as far as secularism and social justice are concerned
