Yarmouth police officer killed in Marstons Mills shooting
The police officer who was shot and killed this afternoon while a warrant was being served at a home on Blueberry Lane has been identified as Yarmouth K9 officer Sean Gannon.

MARSTONS MILLS - A Yarmouth police officer who was shot this afternoon while a warrant was being served at a home on Blueberry Lane has died.
Yarmouth police Chief Frank Frederickson confirmed that K9 officer Sean Gannon, 32, had died, during a press conference at the Yarmouth Police Department’s headquarters in West Yarmouth.
“We feel for his family, particularly his wife Dara,” Frederickson said.
Gannon was named the Yarmouth Police Department’s first, full-time drug detection K9 patrol officer in 2011, according to a statement from the department at the time. He had been with the department for two years at the time, according to the statement.
Gannon was previously a member of the Stonehill College Police Department in Easton and an intermittent police officer with the Nantucket Police Department, the statement says. Gannon graduated from the MBTA Municipal Police Academy in Quincy and holds a Master of Science Degree in emergency management from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and a bachelor of science from Westfield State University.
“To become a victim of a violent crime like this is just horrible,” Frederickson said.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Thomas Latanowich, 29, of Somerville, law enforcement officials said. He was taken into custody after a standoff following the shooting.

The incident took place at around 3:30 p.m. at 109 Blueberry Lane, state police spokesman David Procopio wrote in an email.
The suspect was still in the home after the shooting and a perimeter was set up outside, Procopio wrote in the email.
Large numbers of police and fire officials, including a SWAT team, descended on the neighborhood near Lakeside Drive. A Department of Homeland Security vehicle; a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives vehicle; and at least 20 other law enforcement vehicles in the area of Gooseberry Lane and Lakeside Drive, which police blocked off.
State and Barnstable police were in the area as well as at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where a Cotuit ambulance was parked in front of the hospital shortly after 4 p.m.

Hundreds gather for slain Yarmouth officer
WEST YARMOUTH — Hundreds of people crowded into the Yarmouth Police Department parking lot Saturday at a candlelight vigil to pay their respects to the family, friends and fellow officers of Sean Gannon, a Yarmouth police K-9 Officer who was gunned down in the line of duty on Thursday.
Gannon’s cruiser sat in the front of the department, showered in hundreds of flowers from mourners grieving the loss of the 32-year-old officer who died after he was shot while serving a warrant at a home in Marstons Mills.
Before the vigil started, Nicole Monteiro, a lifelong Yarmouth resident, and her son Mayson placed a flower next to the cruiser.
“I wanted him to see how our community comes together in a tragedy like this,” she said, pointing to Mayson. “It really hits home when it’s one of our own.”
