Poll shows CAPUANO still leading PRESSLEY - Accidentally Illegal horse racing – DuBOIS’ ‘fake news’ comment draws ire

GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS.

STATE OF THE MA-07 RACE - A new poll out this morning shows Rep. Mike Capuano has maintained his 13-point lead over Democratic primary challenger Ayanna Pressley among likely Democratic primary voters. However, the 10-term Democrat is still below 50 percent in next month's closely watched contest.

Among likely Democratic primary voters, 48 percent prefer Capuano, while 35 percent prefer Pressley, according to a new poll from WBUR-FM and MassINC Polling Group. That is virtually unchanged from the previous poll in February, when Capuano led Pressley 47 percent to 35 percent.

Pressley, a 42 year-old African-American woman, appeals to younger voters of color while Capuano, a 66 year-old white man, polls stronger among older white voters.

According to the pol's crosstabs, 60 percent of white voters prefer Capuano, while 53 percent of African American voters prefer Pressley. Massachusetts' 7th District, which includes much of Boston as well as swaths of Randolph, Cambridge, Somerville, and Everett, is the state's lone majority-minority district.

Both candidates are well-liked. Capuano has 65 percent favorability and 8 percent unfavorability, while half of likely primary voters, 50 percent, view Pressley favorably, with just 8 percent having an unfavorable opinion.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is trying to boost Pressley, though the New Yorker's profile in the district is limited. Just more than a third of primary voters, 36 percent, view Ocasio Cortez favorably, while only 6 percent have an unfavorable opinion of her. But 43 percent have never heard of her, and another 14 percent said they had heard of her but didn't have an opinion.

HOW IS THIS LEVEL OF IGNORANCE POSSIBLE?

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, who is strongly favored for reelection this fall, remains popular, even among these Democratic voters. More than six-in-10, 62 percent, view him favorably, and only 20 percent have an unfavorable opinion.

DATELINE BEACON HILL -
- "Massachusetts May Have Just Accidentally Banned Horse Racing," by Mike Deehan, WGBH: "Live horse racing and simulcast events scheduled to take place this week in Plainridge and East Boston might have to be postponed — because Beacon Hill lawmakers may have inadvertently allowed horse racing to become illegal. State law authorizing live and simulcast horse racing expired July 31st, the last day of lawmaker's formal sessions for the year."

- "New Mass. Senate President Karen Spilka On What Lawmakers Did And Didn't Accomplish This Session," by WGBH News, WGBH: "This year, lawmakers passed an opioid bill, a short-term rental tax bill, stronger penalties for animal abusers, a clean energy initiative and an economic development bill that includes infrastructure and local aid funding, as well as a reform of non-compete clauses and the all-important sales tax holiday for 2018. Among the items the legislature didn't get to were a ban on conversion therapy, a "Gender X" option for driver's licenses, equalizing education funding and a measure aimed at stabilizing health care in the state."

- "Beacon Hill leaves many key bills out of last-minute deal-making," by Matt Stout, Boston Globe: "With the clock ticking into Wednesday, the Massachusetts Legislature faced no shortage of stumbling blocks in its last-minute deal-making: Philosophical differences on health care. An untraversable divide on school funding."

- "Airbnb bill is now uncertain in Mass. after Baker's changes," by Tim Logan and Matt Stout, Boston Globe:"Governor Charlie Baker on Wednesday proposed some minor changes to the bill regulating Airbnb and other short-term rentals that lawmakers passed this week. But those small changes could throw a big wrench into complex legislation that was years in the making."

ON THE STUMP -
- "Lowell City Hall hotbed for activity in 3rd District race," by Rick Sobey, Lowell Sun: "City Hall was a hotbed for congressional campaign activity on Wednesday, including two events for 3rd Congressional District candidates and one announcement from a Senate candidate Lori Trahan, raised in Lowell before moving to Westford, held the 'Lowell for Lori' endorsement event Wednesday evening. More than 65 elected officials, business leaders and community activists joined together to endorse the Democratic candidate for the 3rd Congressional District."

"During his career, Jimmy has been a creative, community-oriented leader with Democratic values and a hopeful message," said Auditor Bump. "He has used his talents to aid causes ranging from substance abuse addiction to civil rights to educational equity. Having worked with him to raise money for several non-profits, I feel I know the depth of both his heart and his head. Watching him on the campaign trail you see his compassion and authenticity shines through every time he speaks."

- Trahan TV ad inspired by the people of the Third District, from the Trahan campaign: "The real people of the Third District inspired the television ad released by Lori Trahan, Democrat for Congress, and it begins airing today. Called "People," the ad focuses on the same message she has been hearing from the hundreds of families she has met as she's travelled across the district. Trahan said these families want a representative they know, someone who has a first-hand understanding of their issues, and one they can trust will go to Washington to fight for them." Watch the ad.

THE LOCAL ANGLE -
- "'FAKE' news comment by Brockton rep brings real heat," by Marc Larocque, The Enterprise: "A state lawmaker from Brockton is taking heat from critics on both sides of the political spectrum for her use of the term "fake news" in response to a recent story by The Enterprise, which detailed a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against the city, a parking enforcement officer and other public employees. State Rep. Michelle DuBois, D-Brockton, is getting hammered for stating that 'The Enterprise is FAKE news' in online comments under a recent story by the newspaper about a federal lawsuit filed by Sean Williamson, a disabled black man who was called the N-word by a city parking enforcement officer while disputing a ticket, only to be prosecuted on an assault charge even though there was an exculpatory video of the incident."

- "11 arrested in protest against Northeastern's ongoing contract with ICE," by Amelia Nierenberg, Boston Globe: "Eleven students and activists were arrested early Wednesday morning after sitting in the road in front of the Beacon Street home of Northeastern University president Joseph E. Aoun to protest the university's multimillion-dollar research contract with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. - "State: Chelmsford businessman made illegal donations to local, state candidates," by Alana Melanson, Lowell Sun: "A state agency found a Chelmsford resident funneled thousands of dollars through employees to make contributions to several Merrimack Valley area politicians beyond personal campaign finance limitations. Michael Lupoli, vice president of hospitality for Double N Inc., paid $30,000 to the state general fund to resolve the personal campaign-finance issues as part of a disposition agreement with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance."

- "No easy path to curing opioid crisis, say recovered addicts," by Sam Newhouse, Metro US: "Opioid addiction recovery may seem impossible, as the crisis sweeping America has only been worsened by the stigma of addiction. But addicts who have recovered and been able to return to leading productive lives say that a cure is possible and fellow addicts need time and support, not to be labeled as dangerous 'junkies.'"
