DARTMOUTH — Supporters and detractors of Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson’s federal contract to deputize his officers as immigration agents are expected to gather tonight for a public meeting with the sheriff.
The partnership is authorized by Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
This is the second year Hodgson has held the required annual public meeting of his 287(g) steering committee as part of the agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Hodgson published a notice on his website indicating that members of the public needed to RSVP by April 5 to attend. The meeting takes place at his office, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Last year, about 25 people attended. Many expressed concerns about oversight of detainee treatment and the potential to deport people who have not violated any other laws.
