I don't often try to network pittie type dogs in danger because I don't have enough experience or contacts in the pi...ttie rescue world- I have huge respect for the people that specialize in pitbull advocacy and salute their dedication to such important work.
I believe these much maligned dogs deserve far better than my naive attempts, so I usually leave it to the experts.
HOWEVER...
Two days ago, in San Bernardino, I witnessed such a heartbreaking case that I have to try and help.
I was just walking in to the shelter to pull a dog when I saw a well dressed lady wearing rubber gloves trying to coax a huge black pit out of her car and into the shelter.
It was such a juxtaposition of "types" (and yes, I know better than to even go there) that I stopped to watch, and then offered to help.
She had found him wandering the streets. She was trying to do good and help him. I guess he got into her car willingly, but once at the shelter, confronted by the cacophony of distressed dogs, or perhaps just intuitively knowing how doomed he would be in there, this massive mighty beast had totally shut down in terror and was clutching the ground, immovable.
You see, this dog was a bait dog. His block shaped ebony head and face and neck and chest were so riddled with bite marks, scars and wounds that the lady with him thought he had a skin issue.
I knelt beside him and tried to reassure him, gently running my fingers over his battered ears and down along his ripped up legs.
I offered him a cookie. He couldn't engage at all. I have seen many terrified dogs, dogs in despair and dogs without hope at the shelters. But I have never seen such tragic terror like this.
As he laid on the floor in line for surrender, I explained about what a bait dog was. I do think that he thought he was going to have to fight the dogs he could hear in the kennels beyond.
Another couple in line joined in and the three of us offered up to the waiting line of people a mini seminar on dog fighting, BSL, and the unfair predicament too many pitties too often find themselves in.
We also talked about black dog syndrome. (Amazing how often the general public reacts to that with disbelief!)
As we talked, the couple's little boy sat down beside this beautiful beastie, and began stroking him. The dog turned and looked at the little boy, licked, gulped, and thumped his tucked under tail just once.
Because he was so terrified, the kennel supervisor had to carry him away, and as we watched the door to receiving close behind them, we could see the dog clinging to the AC staffer, wrapping his back legs around the guy's legs, trying any way he could to not be taken away.
Any way, that is, except with aggression.
I realize that he was probably bred to fight in an illegal ring, likely mistreated all his life, and may indeed be indelibly traumatized by circumstance.
But what I saw was a gentle giant that desperately wants to live in peace and know kindness and security.
I fear he may not get out of the shelter alive: big, black bully breed with a scarred up face and soul.
But I think he deserves a chance to be saved, to be rehabilitated, to be treated with compassion.
Please, if anyone can help, would you share his info for a rescue?
If we turn away from the most hopeless cases, we will never learn how to find hope.
If we don't ask, we will never know.

Bald Eagle Rescued After Hit by Car

Portland , Oregon – A bald eagle was rescued after it had been hit by a car on Interstate 84.
The bald eagle was reportedly feeding on something near the highway when it was struck by a car. According to Lieutenant Rich Chatman of Portland Fire and Rescue, several drivers flagged down a passing fire truck to inform the firefighters about the injured eagle.

A rescue team responded to the injured eagle. The rescue team shut down two lanes of the westbound traffic on the highway for about 20 minutes in order to save the protected bald eagle. The bald eagle, who had an 8-foot wingspan, was lying in the highway’s shoulder.

According to Don Hamilton, Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman, Multnomah County Animal Control transported the injured eagle to the Audubon Society of Portland for evaluation.
KATU News reported an update on the protected male bald eagle. “He has a broken leg and injuries to both feet after being hit by car. He’s been stabilized and X-rayed.”

Bald eagles were once listed as a highly endangered species, however the population has rebounded to the point where they are no longer considered endangered anymore. Bald eagles are still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits people from selling or taking a bald or golden eagle, or any part of their nests.

Thank you to all the concerned highway drivers, the firefighters, and those who helped save this bald eagle.

I saw her today and she just wants her own place with her own bed and no dogs barking at her when she finally gets her turn to go outside. My god...is she any different than we are?~robin
♥ Ava: Robin, I like your assessment that she doesn't want competition. I think that's probably exactly the case. I'm so sad for this girl. She is a sweetie with adults and children, but yes, she does need a very careful introduction to other animals. I don't know if there was a full-blown fight or just a little aggression that brought her back to the shelter, but I've seen her behavior towards dogs through the fence and while she certainly doesn't sound very friendly, her tail wags and her ears stay forward. I often wonder if she's all bark and no bite. She's clearly had a rough time of it prior to the shelter life and being in the shelter is no walk in the park, so I all I wish for her is to find a soft, warm bed where she can rest her bony little body and someone to help restore her mental health. Lord knows I would be snappish if I had to live in that noisy place, too.
