Good news.

The questions is: Why was it so close and why did the election take so long to figure out.

Oh, I know. The election is a series of tubes.

Stevens has friends and is unlikely to do jail time at his age. Presidential Pardon?

Bellicose Bumpkin, My understanding is that many of the absentee ballots and those that were included in the late tally would not have been included in 'calling the election' on Nov 4th were so many not watching and reporting.
Since Alaska's population and electoral votes are so small, few pay attention to the outcome, until this year.
There are too many states with questionable votes and outcomes. We need to address this before the next election to ensure confidence in the results.
When the rest of the world recognizes that Bush didn't win, where are we?
