We are beginning to understand the dangers posed by Monsanto GMOs and Monsanto deserves no special protection.
In the midst of everything else that is going on in Washington I wanted to call your attention to an issue that I, and millions of Americans, feel very strongly about. And that is the power of Monsanto, one of the most devious corporations in this country, to push through corporate welfare legislation, the Monsanto Protection Act. This provision allows bio-technology companies to sell genetically modified seeds even if a court blocks them -- and even when the courts find that these crops pose potential harm to health and the environment. Monsanto was able to get that special interest provision included in a must-pass piece of legislation that passed Congress last March. It is set to expire at the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2013. And that’s what must happen. The Monsanto Protection Act must not be renewed! Please sign our petition which urges Congress, once and for all, to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act. On a related issue, I will continue the fight to label genetically engineered food. In 49 countries around the world, including all of Europe, people have the opportunity of knowing whether or not they are eating food which contains genetically engineered ingredients. We should have that same right in the United States. Once again, I hope you will join me in signing our petition that makes it absolutely clear that the Monsanto Protection Act must not be renewed. Sincerely, Senator Bernie Sanders |
