Obamacare

"Americans for Prosperity," a political front group funded by the Koch brothers, has been airing an ad this week featuring a cancer survivor who worries that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which begins enrolling people October 1, will prevent other cancer patients from having the care that saved her life. The Koch group has spent $15 million on such broadcast and cable ads over the last year. Now it's starting a new media campaign to delay the law's effects. Meanwhile, "Heritage Action" and the "Senate Conservatives Fund" have each released scorecards showing which lawmakers have pledged to "defund Obamacare." And the "Club for Growth" has vowed to find primary opponents to run against other Republican incumbents considered insufficiently extremist.

The underlying question isn't whether Obamacare is good or not; it's whether using the institutions of government to blackmail America is good or not. And it's whether secret and unlimited money from super-rich right-wingers should be allowed to poison our politics. The answer to both questions must be a resounding no.
