The Senate voted 78 to 22 to authorise the first step in Mr Obama's move to degrade and destroy the Islamic State group which has conquered swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria. It came as US warplanes hit an Islamic State group training camp in Iraq in their first strike not directly supporting Iraqi or Kurdish forces, and France announced it will join the air war, although its action will be limited to Iraq.

Terrorism suspects in detention: police won't say how many are being held 19 Sept 2014 The Australian federal police are refusing to confirm how many people are still being detained without charge as a result of counter-terrorism raids in NSW on Thursday. In a press conference on Friday the acting AFP commissioner, Andrew Colvin, refused to answer questions about how many people were being detained without charge, when the number of people detained would be made public, and whether they had been brought before a magistrate for their detention to be continued. Terrorism raids: beheading attack could have taken place within days, Tony Abbott says 19 Sept 2014 A terrorist attack involving the random killing of a member of the public could have happened "within days" and all that is required to carry out an attack in Australia is a determined individual, a knife, an iPhone and a victim, the prime minister said. Tony Abbott also said there had been "chatter" among extremists about targeting Parliament House, as security inside and outside the building was handed over to the Australian federal police. His comments came the day after the most extensive counter-terrorism raids in Australia’s history resulted in two people being charged.

Russia joins online 'conspiracy' theorists in claiming Scottish referendum was rigged --Igor Borisov, one of four accredited Russian observers in Edinburgh, said counting process fell short of 'accepted international principles' 19 Sept 2014 Speaking to state news agency RIA Novosti, he claimed that the way the count was conducted varied greatly from 'generally accepted international principles'. When asked for specific examples of the violations he witnessed, Mr Borisov claimed that the size of the room made it 'impossible' to keep an eye on all the counters...He added that the boxes were kept in the room without any protection. Borisov said the US state department, the UK and other western countries loudly criticised the Kremlin about Russia's supposed democratic deficiencies. But in this instance, he said, London and Edinburgh had not 'fully met' the requirements of a proper referendum.

Scotland Rejects Independence From Britain in a Close Vote 18 Sept 2014 Voters in Scotland rejected independence from Britain in a referendum that had threatened to break up the 307-year union between them, according to projections by the BBC and Sky News early Friday. Before dawn after a night of counting that showed a steady trend in favor of maintaining the union, Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy head of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, effectively conceded defeat for the "yes" campaign that had pressed for secession. "Like thousands of others across the country I've put my heart and soul into this campaign and there is a real sense of disappointment that we've fallen narrowly short of securing a yes vote," Ms. Sturgeon told BBC television.
