Massachusetts has sent some great heroes to Washington who have stood tall for the interests of ALL Americans and against vested interests.
Congressman Jim McGovern is among those heroes.
We've already seen right-wing tactics in Massachusetts attempting to limit the vote, limit access and intimidate voters.
Middleboro was targeted with an attempted By-Law to mandate identification at Town Meetings to prevent non-existent voter fraud.
On Monday, I had the privilege of joining Civil Rights leader Rep. John Lewis at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for a discussion about voting rights issues in the United States.
Despite several constitutional amendments that are already supposed to guarantee every American the right to vote, many states have implemented their own underhanded policies that effectively strip certain segments of the population from casting their ballot.
To counter these voter suppression tactics, several of my colleagues and I have gotten behind the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015.
At Monday’s event, John Lewis offered these wise words: “It doesn’t matter whether we are African American, white, Latin American, or Native American. It doesn’t matter whether we are straight or gay. We are one people; we are one family. We are one house. And, as Dr. Martin Luther King said on one occasion, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters, or we will perish as fools.”
But Republicans all over the country have been passing restrictive measures to deny people the right to vote, in the hopes that the electorate will become more favorable to them and their conservative friends. This is wrong, and we must take action against it.
Thanks for standing up,
Jim
