Congressman Jim McGovern: do it for mom

Wanted to make sure you saw this message – see below.

Standing up for nursing moms in the workplace shouldn’t be a controversial issue. It makes perfect sense that a nursing mother should be offered a clean space and time during the day to provide for her child. Frankly, if men were the ones who had to pump breast milk, we probably would have passed a provision like this years ago.

Begin forwarded message:

Friend,

Working mothers contribute tremendously to our economy here in Massachusetts and across the country. Unfortunately, many new mothers face hardships when they return to work after having a child.

Due to an exemption in the Affordable Care Act, small businesses are allowed to prohibit new mothers from pumping breastmilk on schedule while they’re at work.

This is just wrong. Our workplace culture MUST change to accommodate the universal needs of new working mothers.

That’s why I’m proud to cosponsor the Fair Access for Moms Act, which will guarantee new mothers the space and freedom to nurse after they return to work.

Preventing new mothers from adequately caring for their newborns at work impedes the women’s ability to stay at work – and some women even risk losing their jobs to provide for their newborn.

This is not just a women’s issue – it is an economic issue. When women aren’t able to both work and care for their families, it affects the small business they work for and the economic wellbeing of their family, which has broader economic consequences for entire communities across America.
