Important redaction/update on 'fictional' story, "Retired CIA Agent: 'We Run the Afghan Opium Trade'" --The headlineand summary that was included in Wednesday's CLG Newsletter is not factual. I apologize for posting the summary and including it in the newsletter. The item was apparently 'satirical.' CLG, however, stands by the political comments made *on* the story, as opium production in Afghanistan has skyrocketed since the US invasion of Afghanistan. --LRP

Ahmed Mohamed did not invent, nor build a clock | 17 Sept 2015 | I have something in common with Ahmed Mohamed: as a youngster, I was also an electronics enthusiast. At his age and even earlier, I frequently took apart electronic devices...I found the highest resolution photograph of the clock I could. Instantly, I was disappointed. Somewhere in all of this -- there has indeed been a hoax. Ahmed Mohamed didn't invent his own alarm clock. He didn't even build a clock...For starters, one glance at the printed circuit board in the photo, and I knew we were looking at mid-to-late 1970s vintage electronics...So there you have it folks, Ahmed Mohamed did not invent, nor build a clock. He took apart an existing clock, and transplanted the guts into a pencil box, and claimed it was his own creation. It all seems really fishy to me.

Trump cites 'double standard' in comments about Fiorina's appearance | 17 Sept 2015 | Donald Trump said Thursday he is being held to a gender "double standard," arguing that his comments about Carly Fiorina's appearance were viewed more harshly than remarks the former Hewlett-Packard CEO has made about her competitors in the past. "It's not only a double standard -- it's being politically correct," Trump told Fox News, saying he was "very nice" to hissurging rival. But he said Fiorina has criticized her political opponent's looks in the past, citing her failed 2010 Senate campaign against Barbara Boxer in California. "She was very nasty. She was running against Barbara Boxer. She lost in a landslide, but during the run she was really horrible about Barbara Boxer's looks," Trump said.

Fiorina Super PAC Tests Legal Limits of Campaign Coordination | 17 Sept 2015 | The emergence of super PACs and their ability to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns has raised legal questions as to how campaigns and candidates are allowed to communicate or coordinate with them since the Citizens United decision in 2010. In the past six years, those limits have been tested in various ways. But in the current presidential campaign, the lines are being blurred even more and no candidate is testing the legal limits more visibly or blatantly than Carly Fiorina, whose performance in Wednesday night's Republican debate has thrust her candidacy [by the corporate-owned media] into the spotlight...CARLY for America is the super PAC; Carly for President is the campaign.

Jeb Bush's first post-debate speech draws sparse crowd | 17 Sept 2015 | Jeb Bush's first post-debate political rally started a few minutes early, in a rec center room built for 200 but only half-full half-empty. He started with an in-joke, about a candidate who would not be named and whose rallies were at least a basketball stadium larger. Mired in single digits in the polls, Bush is struggling to adjust to an unfamiliar role as an underdog. Even his debate performance, while more forceful than a previous one, was uneven.
