Before Social Security and Medicare, too often, growing old meant growing poor. It meant if you couldn’t afford medical treatment, you didn’t get it.
Today, that’s no longer longer the case. Roughly 2 million Ohioans receive Medicare. And Social Security lifts around 638,000 seniors out of poverty each year.
Republicans believe that “serious entitlement reform will be within reach” if the 2016 elections go their way. The problem is, when they say “reform,” they’re talking about dismantling Medicare as we know it and turning it into a voucher system, or privatizing Social Security.
We need to continue to protect and expand these programs -- not dismantle or privatize them. Sign the petition to protect Social Security and Medicare.
Social Security and Medicare aren’t just programs -- they’re promises.
Medicare ensures that seniors and citizens with disabilities can afford health insurance to cover their medical expenses. It provides the security of knowing that you won’t have to choose between a life-saving medical procedure and buying groceries.
Social Security ensures that after long years in the workforce, seniors can have a financially secure and stable retirement.
We cannot afford to break these promises to our seniors. If you agree, add your name to mine to protect Medicare and Social Security.
I will continue my work to protect Medicare and Social Security -- and oppose efforts to privatize them.
Thank you for standing with me.
