Breaking: Russian Su-24 fighter jet shot down over Syria - Russia MoD | 24 Nov 2015 | A Russian Su-24 fighter has been shot down in Syria, Russian Defense Ministry said, adding the plane hadn't violated Turkish airspace and was at an altitude of 6,000 meters. The pilots managed to eject from the downed jet, the ministry said, adding their fate is as yet unknown. A Turkish military official told Reuters the jet was warned before being targeted. The official added that the plane was shot down by Turkish F-16 fighter jets.

Scientists were carrying out tests on the city's water supply after equipment used to guard against chemical products, including protective suits, was stolen from a Paris hospital. Paris Water president Célia Blauel confirmed that water samples were being analysed and six vital sites were under armed guard. Twelve protective suits used to guard against chemical products and viruses such as Ebola were stolen from the city’s Necker hospital complex. More than 30 protective boots were also taken, along with gloves and masks.

A formal complaint was filed on Thursday, the same day Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in the National Assembly "there may also be a risk of chemical and bacteriological weapons" used by attackers.

Police will focus on a different aspect of counter-terrorism each day this week, from attack planning, protecting businesses and crowded places, cyber attacks, and online extremism and radicalisation.

Anxious inhabitants of the Belgian capital had hoped for a respite from the lockdown that has seen shops, schools and offices shut, public transport restricted, museums and theatres closed, seasonal markets cancelled, and thousands of armed police and soldiers in the streets. Some measures -- such as the closure of schools and the metro -- may be lifted on Wednesday, Michel told a press conference on Monday evening. Others will remain, however, and the military deployment will be reinforced.

The threat is "very serious and imminent," he said. He said authorities suspected bars, shops and public transport to be the main targets.
16 arrested in anti-terror raids in Belgium | 23 Nov 2015 | Belgian police arrested 16 people in anti-terror raids but suspected Paris attacks gunman Salah Abdeslam remains at large, the authorities said. A total of 22 raids were carried out on Sunday across Brussels and Charleroi, BBC quoted Belgian prosecutor Eric van der Sypt as saying. Police fired two shots at a car during an operation in Molenbeek, injuring one suspect who was later arrested.
Terror police arrest six Brits as security forces put Brussels on lockdown | 22 Nov 2015 | Six British men were arrested in Belgium yesterday after they were spotted in three old ambulances near Brussels while the city was in a fullscale terror alert...Six armoured trucks and a police car moved in after the converted vehicles parked up in a rest area beside the E411 highway in Bierges south-east of the capital around 2pm. Last night the six Pakistani-born UK nationals were being questioned while officers continued to search the ambulances -- two Fiats and a Mercedes with British plates. Brussels remained in lockdown following an intelligence warning of an imminent Paris-style attack on the Belgian capital.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said Saturday that officials had identified shopping centers and public transportation as soft targets for a possible attack involving multiple assailants at multiple locations. The government warned residents to avoid crowded spots. Bars and restaurants in the city center were asked to close for the night at 6 p.m. as fears of another terrorist strike in Europe mounted.
Worldwide travel alert: State Department issues warning for Americans amid increased terror threat | 23 Nov 2015 | The State Department issued a rare worldwide travel alert Monday evening for U.S. citizens amid several terror threats overseas. The department says all U.S. citizens should remain vigilant when in public places or using transportation. Last week, ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] released a video making threats against New York City. The video showed Times Square, Herald Square and images of terrorists wearing suicide belts.
ISIS supporters 'release a target list of addresses and names of people they claim work for the FBI and CIA' [Yeah, their bosses.] | 22 Nov 2015 | Accounts affiliated with terrorist organization Islamic State reportedly released a target list of US officials 'wanted to be killed', including supposed employees of the FBI and CIA. Vocativ reported Sunday that an ISIS-affiliated Twitter account sent out the names and addresses of people it claims work at the US Defense Intelligence Agency, National Counterterrorism Center and the National Guard. At least some of the names on the lists were found elsewhere online, suggesting that the Islamic State Cyber Army 'hackers' may have actually just compiled information already available.

The NYPD, FDNY and Homeland Security held a three-hour active-shooter drill at the Bowery subway station. Police blocked off the area near Kenmare and Broome streets while they went down into the closed station, CBS2 reported.

Southwest plane diverted to Missouri over 'suspicious' behavior - FBI | 22 Nov 2015 | A Southwest Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Los Angeles was diverted to Kansas City and searched on Sunday after the crew reported suspicious behavior by some passengers, the FBI said. "The flight crew diverted the flight to Kansas City out of an abundance of caution based upon suspicious behavior displayed by several passengers," FBI spokesperson Bridget Patton in Kansas City said in a statement. All passengers were taken off the plane and those in question were interviewed by law enforcement, Patton said.
UN Security Council approves 'all necessary measures' to fight the 'global and unprecedented threat' of ISIS in wake of Paris attacks --Unanimously approved resolution to take 'all necessary measures' --Britain could soon join the coalition of nations bombing ISIS in Syria | 20 Nov 2015 | World leaders have united against ISIS in a United Nations Security Council resolution calling on countries to take 'all necessary measures' to fight ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] in Syria and Iraq. The Security Council unanimously agreed to the resolution, which states that the barbaric group 'constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security'. The resolution, which was drafted by France, condemns the 'horrifying terrorist attacks' in Paris a week ago which left 130 dead, as well as atrocities committed by ISIS in Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon and the downing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt.
Trump Open to Ground Troops in Syria, Expands on Safe Zone Idea | 18 Nov 2015 | Donald Trump would be open to putting boots on the ground "if need be" in the fight against ISIS, he told reporters before a rally in Massachusetts Wednesday night. "We've got to get rid of ISIS quickly, quickly. Not for a long time. Let me tell you what I really want to do. I want to get other people to put troops on the ground and we'll back them up 100 percent," he explained. Trump added to his recently proposed idea of a "swatch of land" in Syria that would act as a safe zone for refugees, telling reporters that other countries would fund it and that it's the least expensive idea.

Gunmen Take 170 Hostages in Mali Hotel Attack --Around 10 men are said to have launched a gun and grenade attack at the Radisson hotel, screaming 'Allahu Akbar' as they entered. | 20 Nov 2015 | Gunmen have stormed a hotel in Mali and taken 170 people hostage in an apparent terror attack. According to reports, around 10 gunmen entered the Radisson Blu hotel in the capital Bamako, shooting and screaming "Allahu Akbar", which is Arabic for God Is Great. The owners of the hotel have said 140 guests and 30 employees are "locked in".
U.S. appeals court withholds release of memos on targeted killings | 24 Nov 2015 | Memorandums on the legal basis for targeted killings of people in other countries that the U.S. government believes are involved in militant attacks can be kept secret, a federal court ruled in a document released on Monday. A three-judge panel of the New York-based U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals denied an effort to obtain the memos by the New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. The ruling was detailed in a 22-page opinion reached last month but placed under temporary seal.
Ukraine nuclear power plants 'dangerously' without power as towers feeding energy to Crimea blown up | 23 Nov 2015 | In an eerie reminder of a possible nuclear catastrophe, a senior Ukrainian energy official revealed that the attack on transmission towers that cut off the delivery of electricity from Ukraine to Crimea also created an emergency situation at nuclear power plants. The apparent act of sabotage in Ukraine's Kherson region forced an emergency power unloading at several Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which can be extremely dangerous, according to the first deputy director of Ukraine's energy company Ukrenergo, Yuriy Katich. Russia's Crimea was forced to switch to autonomous reserve power after transmission towers in the adjacent Ukrainian region were blown up, causing a blackout. Meanwhile, the repairs were delayed by Right Sector and Crimean Tatar "activists" terrorists attempting to block crews from getting to the scene.
First radioactive waste removed from ex-nuclear power barge in Texas | 14 Nov 2015 | The first load of radioactive waste has been removed from a World War II-era Liberty ship converted to a barge-mounted nuclear reactor that was towed to a Galveston shipyard for scrapping, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. The waste from the former USS Sturgis was packaged for removal in special polypropylene bulk bags on Oct. 21, the Galveston County Daily News reported. The waste material was loaded onto flatbed trucks and driven to a disposal facility...In the months leading up to the ship's arrival, the Sturgis drew objections from some Galveston residents and property owners concerned about the [lack of] safety of the radioactive materials.
October continued global heat parade as 2015 soars toward record --Likelihood cemented that 2015 will be Earth's warmest year since records began in 1880 | 18 Nov 2015 | Last month was the warmest October on record worldwide, federal scientists announced Wednesday, further cementing the likelihood that 2015 will be Earth's warmest year since records began in 1880. October also marked the sixth consecutive month a monthly global temperature record has been broken, according to the report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Earth's temperature in October was 1.76 degrees above the average of 57.1 degrees. Data from other agencies that keep weather records -- NASA and the Japan Meteorological Agency -- also confirmed it was the warmest October.
At least 16 hospitalized in New Orleans playground shooting by 'at least two gunmen' | 22 Nov 2015 | At least 16 people were hospitalized in New Orleans Sunday evening, following a shooting during a party at a city park, authorities said. The shooting broke out at Bunny Friend Park in the Upper Ninth Ward where about 500 people were gathered at the playground to shoot a music video, according to New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison. That event followed a second line parade by the Nine Times Social & Pleasure Club that took place earlier a block or two from the shooting scene, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. Witnesses told WWL-TV that at least two gunmen fired into the crowd.
John Bel Edwards defeats David Vitter in Louisiana governor's race | 21 Nov 2015 | Completing a longshot bid that ran counter to the conservative tide sweeping the Southern states, Democratic state Rep. John Bel Edwards was elected governor of Louisiana on Saturday, defeating his Republican rival, U.S. Sen. David Vitter. Edwards was the top vote-getter in the state's open primary, building a lead over Vitter that he never surrendered. With 1,800 precincts out of 3,945 reporting, Edwards led Vitter 55 percent to 43 percent, prompting the Edwards campaign to declare victory late Saturday evening.

Obama files Supreme Court appeal on immigration executive action | 20 Nov 2015 | The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court for a speedy decision on its plans to shield from deportation millions of immigrants living in the country illegally. Legal papers filed on Friday call for the court's immediate review of President Barack Obama's plan to protect and give work permits to as many as 5 million immigrants. The appeal, filed a year after Obama announced his executive actions on immigration, injects the Supreme Court into a dispute between 26 mainly Republican-led states and the Democratic administration...Most recently, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the states.
Polls: Donald Trump leads, Ben Carson slips | 22 Nov 2015 | Donald Trump has a double-digit lead over Ben Carson in the Republican presidential race and voters say they prefer change over political experience, two new national polls show. Trump leads Carson 32% to 22%, in a new poll by The Washington Post and ABC News. And the real estate mogul leads the retired neurosurgeon 28% to 18% in a new Fox News poll.
Endangered northern white rhino dies at SD Zoo Safari Park --After Nola's death, there are only three northern whites in the world | 22 Nov 2015 | Nola, one of just four endangered northern white rhinos left in the world, died Sunday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The 41-year-old rhino has been under veterinary care for a bacterial infection and age-related health issues...Nola's death is also a blow to the northern white rhino sub-species. After decades of poaching, there are now just three northern white rhinos left in the world. All three - a male and two females - live on the Ol Pejeta Conservency in Kenya.
