CounterCurrents: Will you let Countercurrents die?

Dear Friend of Countercurrents.org,

I'm writing this mail with a heavy heart. The Countercurrents fundraising campaign has been going on for over two weeks. We haven't even reached half way mark! So far we raised 4.5 lakh rupees ( $7000). The sad part is that very few people responded to our campaign. The fund raised so far has been from a few number of people. This is saddening. This mail goes out to 10,000 people.  If each one of you contributed Rs 50 or $1 we can easily reach our target. Will you do that? 

Even though we didn't achieve our target last year, CC co-produced a documentary film on Kandhamal communal violence of 2008, in which about 100 people were killed,  over 40 women were subjected to rape and molestation, 60000 people were diplaced. It was the worst communal violence against Christians in modern India. Good thing about Kandhamal is that with the hard work of several committed people there is vibrant victims and survivors movement, which didn't happen in many riot affected areas of India. This documentary will help strengthen that movement for Peace, Justice and Harmony.   If anyone likes to organise a screening of the film in your place, just send me a mail. 

Countercurrents is a community website. It's run by the community. I'm just a moderator. Our writers and readers create this website. It's a Common. As members of a Common, we all have a responsibility to maintain our Common space. Otherwise, what the cynics call the 'tragedy of the Commons' will strike Countercurrents too and will die a natural death. 

Some of you may be asking why is he pestering us with money? Why can't he do what all other websites do? Yes, I can and make millions by putting up advertisements on Countercurrents. No, I won't do that. It's a betrayal of journalism, betrayal of CC's integrity, it's a betrayal of the trust CC's readers have put on it for so many years. I won't sell our Common to the highest bidder, no matter what. I would rather let it die than put up advertisements on the site. 

Will you let Countercurrents die? We have to make  a decision NOW!
