MORNING MESSAGE
People, Not Politicians, Beat Health Care Repeal
The real story of saving health care is that people from all walks of life, in small towns and big, red districts and blue, are standing up and working together for ourselves and our families, our friends and neighbors.
Health Care Reset
Trump turmoil adds delays, doubt to GOP agenda. The Hill:“The Republican Congress and the administration are signaling a pivot to tax reform… yet Trump on Saturday also wrote on Twitter that Republicans should not give up the effort on health care… the conflicting signals, increasing friendly fire between the White House and Senate GOP and general sense of turmoil has left Republicans increasingly pessimistic about their agenda.”
Centrist lawmakers plot bipartisan health care stabilization bill. Politico:“A coalition of roughly 40 House Republicans and Democrats plan to unveil a slate of Obamacare fixes Monday they hope will gain traction after the Senate’s effort to repeal the law imploded… Their plan focuses on immediately stabilizing the insurance market and then pushing for Obamacare changes that have received bipartisan backing in the past.”
Trump is trying to reanimate Trumpcare using threats and ridicule. New York Magazine:“Clearly still upset over the latest — and seemingly final — failure of the GOP Senate to repeal and (maybe) replace Obamacare… Trump urged Republican senators, who he said ‘look like fools and are just wasting time,’ to ‘go to 51 votes NOW and WIN,’ despite the fact that the GOP couldn’t muster the 51 votes they needed to pass a ‘skinny’ repeal of Obamacare on Thursday. Later in the day, the filibuster complaints out of his system, Trump switched to threats, suggesting that he would end federal cost-sharing payments to health-insurance companies and come after the health coverage offered to members of Congress and their staffs.”
Police Reject Trump Call To Rough Treatment
Police chiefs denounce Trump’s endorsement of ‘police brutality’. Boston Globe:“Police leaders across the country moved quickly to distance themselves from — or to outright condemn — President Trump’s statements about ‘roughing up’ people who’ve been arrested. The swift public denunciations came as departments are under intense pressure to stamp out brutality and excessive force that can erode the relationship between officers and the people they police – and cost police chiefs their jobs.”
MS Man Shot By Police In ‘Execution’
Lawyers believe MS man shot by police was executed. LA Times“Lawyers for the family of a Mississippi man fatally shot by police called Friday on the Justice Department to investigate, saying they believe the man’s death was an execution. Murray Wells, the attorney for the wife and son of Ismael Lopez, said officers involved in Lopez’s death last weekend in the Mississippi city of Southaven should face criminal charges… The lawyer said he has hired investigators and has spoken to neighbors of Lopez, an auto mechanic originally from Veracruz, Mexico, who came to the U.S. two decades ago and had never been in trouble with authorities. Wells has said recently that police didn’t have a warrant for Lopez and were at the wrong address. He also has said Lopez was shot through a closed front door.”
More from OurFuture.org:
Iowans Ready to Turn Political Revolution Into Reality. Evan Burger:“in a state like Iowa, the vision of building lasting power from the bottom up has the potential to revolutionize electoral politics. The turnout at ‘Revolution Iowa’ showed our state is ready to turn this vision into reality.”
Democrats Need to Go Bolder, Not Backwards, on Jobs. Sam Pizzigati:“The Democrats’ just-unveiled ‘Better Deal’ agenda features a job-training proposal that demands less from CEOs than the job-training proposal Bill Clinton ran on a quarter-century ago.”
Protecting Superfunds: The Polluter Must Pay. Lois Gibbs:“The toxic legacy of Love Canal means we must protect the power of communities to hold polluters accountable. After 40 years, it is painfully clear that we can’t count on corporations to take responsibility for their actions.”
