CounterCurrents: Heroes And Sheroes Of Plural India : Pujari Laldas

Dear Friend,

As the 72nd anniversary of the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagazaki near, Ron Forthofer warns that the US to continue with sanctions and war games against North Korea instead of negotiating is insane as it is endangering the world. An attack by the US on North Korea would likely draw China and Russia into the fighting.

Andre Vltchek in a long article busts some myths about Afghanistan and concludes, "No book can describe Afghanistan, and I’m wondering whether even films can. Maybe poetry can, maybe a theatre play or a novel can, but I’m not sure, yet. All I know is that it is alive, far from being finished. Its heart is pulsating; its body is warm. If someone tells you that it is finished, don’t trust him. Come and see for yourself; just watch and listen."

Our "Heroes And Sheroes Of Plural India" series continues with the story of  Pujari Laldas who was killed by fundamentalists. He was the chief priest in the Ram janmabhoomi temple and he vehemently opposed the actions of hindutva forces responsible of demolition of Babri Masjid and the riots that followed it. Sitting in the heart of Ayodhya, he made sure that his views on communal harmony reach masses.

Also more stories from around the world.

I hate to say it, but I have to say it to save CC, our fund raising is going slow. Please lend a helping hand to keep CC survive http://www.countercurrents.org/subscription/

Insane Policy Towards North Korea
by Ron Forthofer

For the US to continue with sanctions and war games instead of negotiating is insane as it is endangering the world. An attack by the US on North Korea would likely draw China and Russia into the fighting. Not to negotiate shows that General Bradley’s quote is still correct about our leaders. We must demand that the US negotiate to prevent perhaps the greatest catastrophe of all time.

Russia and the United States’ Presidential Election
by Dan Lieberman

Despite statements from U.S. intelligence, from what has been disclosed until July 2017, Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 presidential election has been greatly exaggerated and even less than what would be expected. As shown, there was no “massive cyber operation,” whose purpose was to help Trump win the election by discrediting Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton; just business as usual and a lucky break. “Extensive use of social media and trolls, as well as open propaganda on Russian-controlled news platforms,” were also the usual opinions from the usual suspects; nothing added to the alternative news.

Afghanistan Is Right Here! Lies, Myths And Legends
by Andre Vltchek

Afghanistan is here. You love it or hate it, or anything in between. But you cannot cheat: you are here and if you know how to see and feel, then you slowly begin to know. Or you are not here, and you cannot understand or judge it at all.No book can describe Afghanistan, and I’m wondering whether even films can. Maybe poetry can, maybe a theatre play or a novel can, but I’m not sure, yet. All I know is that it is alive, far from being finished. Its heart is pulsating; its body is warm. If someone tells you that it is finished, don’t trust him. Come and see for yourself; just watch and listen.

A Therapy For India’s Suicidal Farmers
by Moin Qazi

While debates continue to rage on reforming the agricultural sector to improve the economic conditions of farmer, there has till now recently been no attempt to focus on the likely mental problems arising out of economic stress that may be leading to suicides. Farm suicides are a reflection of the economic plight of an ailing rural economy but demonstrate the utter state of mental hopelessness and weak resilience of farmers who have become emotionally so fragile that they are meekly taking their own lives.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness: Book Review
by Gabriele Dietrich

Somehow, the new book of Arundhati Roy: The Ministry of Utmost    Happiness, does not seem to have received the reception it deserved. Partly this is understandable, because the fanfare, with which the first novel was celebrated when it received the Booker, could not be repeated. I saw only a few reviews of the new book. They were either written by fans or decided non-fans. There was a common tendency to compare the new book with the earlier one. This in itself is a problematic, if not wrong, approach
