BAKER and GONZALEZ’ spar — RECOUNT ready in MA-03 — PRESSLEY reflects

09/07/2018 06:54 AM EDT
By Lauren Dezenski (ldezenski@politico.com; @laurendezenski)
TGIF, MASSACHUSETTS.

HERE COMES THE GENERAL — We're three days into general election season and Gov. Charlie Baker and newly crowned Democratic nominee Jay Gonzalez have begun battling it out. Gonzalez is already using a few classic challenger tactics.

First, the Gonzalez campaign offered up a redux of the so-called People's Pledge, which would limit spending by outside groups in the campaign itself. Baker's team has already turned the pledge down, telling reporters "the campaign will continue to comply with the letter and spirit of all Massachusetts campaign finance laws and regulations."

Then came the issue of debates. The Gonzalez campaign announced they had received invitations to five debates, and that Gonzalez "intends to accept all five and others that come from different regions of the state." Meanwhile, Baker, who did not participate in a debate with his primary opponent Scott Lively, put out word that the campaign would participate in three debates in the general election cycle. Gonzalez's campaign manager Kevin Ready seized on that, saying: "Charlie Baker's decision to reject debates hosted by media outlets in Worcester and Springfield is an insult to communities outside of the Boston area and a slap in the face to the Hispanic community served by Telemundo Boston."

This cycle's thinking by the Gonzalez campaign includes a lesson learned from the party's 2014 loss: Get the candidate out in front of as many people as possible in as many ways as possible as soon as possible (debate participation counts as valuable earned media up against costly paid media like ads more easily afforded by the Baker campaign's deep pockets).

Meanwhile, 22 mayors across the commonwealth — 10 of whom are Democrats — announced their support for Baker yesterday. Many of those endorsements came from gateway cities like Fall River, Brockton, Lawrence, Lowell, and Springfield: Areas that will be crucial for Baker to run up his vote totals come Election Day. That Democratic representation is no mistake either. Baker has already leaned into his support on the left, rolling out campaign chair and lifelong Democrat Jack Connors. Connors has known the Bakers for years — he used to work with Baker's wife Lauren Baker at ad firm Hill Holiday.

ON THE STUMP —
- "Trahan, Koh teams collect signatures to meet Friday deadline," by Chris Lisinski and Robert Mills, Lowell Sun: "As election workers continue to work toward a certified result in the 3rd District Democratic primary, Dan Koh's campaign on Thursday tweeted out its first indication that it may seek recount."

- "Pressley: Her election is 'A mandate for hope,'" by Jennifer Smith, Dorchester Reporter: "In her first one-one-one interview since her historic victory, Ayanna Pressley reflects on the highs and lows of the campaign and how she sought to 'change the math' ... 'I was working to win, but I was prepared to lose,' said Boston City Councillor Ayanna Pressley, who reflected on her historic election victory in an exclusive interview today with the Dorchester Reporter."

- "How Ayanna Pressley Won," by Pressley's campaign consultant Josiane Martinez for WBUR: "Pressley also upended the way candidates traditionally approach the media. Pressley's only TV ads were in Spanish, running on Telemundo and Univision, and featured well-known Latino community members supporting her candidacy. Her campaign relied heavily on media coverage, taking advantage of opportunities to share her message with national and ethnic outlets that came calling following the election of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York."

- "In $6 lapel pin, Pressley wore a proud message," by Cynthia Fernandez, Boston Globe: "It's a simple lapel pin of a purple folding chair emblazoned with four letters: BYOC, for 'bring your own chair.'"

- "Fall River mayor abandons fellow Dem to endorse Gov. Baker," by Ted Nesi, WPRI: "Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia broke with his party on Thursday, announcing that he is endorsing Republican Gov. Charlie Baker over Democratic nominee Jay Gonzalez."

- "Candidate's 'decline to prosecute' list alarms cops," by Alexi Cohan and Brooks Sutherland, Boston Herald: "The Boston Police Patrolmen's Union is raising the alarm about Suffolk District Attorney candidate Rachael Rollins' 'decline to prosecute' list — while the county's top police officials say they want to talk to her about it."

DATELINE BEACON HILL —
- "Massachusetts marijuana retailers could get final go-ahead this month," by State House News Service: "A handful of the marijuana businesses granted provisional licenses have informed the Cannabis Control Commission they are ready to be inspected, one of the final steps before retail sales of marijuana, approved by voters almost two years ago, can begin."

- "Fifth state trooper indicted in overtime scandal," by Sean Philip Cotter, Boston Herald: "Like the four troopers accused of similar charges before him, DeJong filed bogus traffic tickets for the shifts he didn't work or forward-dated ones from previous shifts, prosecutors say."

- "Auditor says RMV licensed dead people. RMV says all the people are alive," by Joshua Miller, Boston Globe: "State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump released an audit Thursday that found the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles had issued 1,905 driver's licenses in the names of dead people. ... The RMV says the audit is wrong."

- "'InStyle', Reebok Partner For Weekly Video 'Badass Women' Series," by Melynda Fuller, MediaPost: "Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey will also appear on the first season, in addition to several other guests."

THE WARREN REPORT —
- "Is it 2018, or 2020? Warren's reelection contest has hallmarks of national race," by Victoria McGrane, Boston Globe: "Elizabeth Warren says — and then says it again — that she's focused on winning a second term in the Senate. But while she glad-hands in Plymouth and Pittsfield, Warren is also running a shadow national campaign that has all the appearances of a future presidential run."

READING THE OP-ED, WHO COULD NOT WONDER WHY THIS WAS NOT DONE?

- "After anonymous op-ed, Sen. Elizabeth Warren says if President Trump is 'unfit,' cabinet should 'invoke the 25th' Amendment," by Gintautas Dumcius, Masslive.com: "'If the presidential cabinet believes that President Trump is 'unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office' as the 25th Amendment states, then every minute they make excuses is a minute that our country is at risk,' Warren said in an email blast to supporters."

FRONT PAGE PLAY — Herald: "BURT REYNOLDS, 1936-2018" "NO TIME FOR 'PETTY' CRIME" — Globe: "Families separated at border sue US," "By whatever name, another D.C. frenzy," "Back to school, eventually," "Warren's Senate race will echo far beyond Mass.," "Playing in a traveling band that only he can hear."

STADIUM WILL NOT PAY FOR ITSELF!
BIG MISTAKE!

- "Indian Country watching for decision on Cape tribe's land," by Tanner Stening, Cape Cod Times: "Federal Indian law experts and tribes across the country are keeping a close eye on the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, which is just days away from learning whether the U.S. Department of the Interior — the agency charged with protecting tribal trust assets — can secure its land."

- "Good Chemistry in Worcester is ordered to stop selling pot grown at its Bellingham facility," by Craig S. Semon, Worcester Telegram: "The state Department of Public Health has issued a cease-and-desist and quarantine order to the first medical marijuana dispensary to open in Worcester, while it looks into 'concerns about the use of pesticides' at the facility's cultivation operation in Bellingham."
