Bringing GRIDLOCK to Beacon HIll

There are plenty of important things that should be changed on Beacon Hill. The trivia this small band of 5 is challenging is petty, among other things. Pity!

Rep. Jim Lyons seems to have problems all over. There's more that the 2 items posted below that provide a flavor for this Tea Bagger Rep.......

Feud between Rep. Lyons and neighbor continues

Barbara L’Italien (D) to run against tax cheat Jim Lyons (TeaParty) in the 18th Essex

In addition to the liens, the letter pointed to a 2002 Rockingham Superior Court case in September 2002, in which the plaintiff, Tiki Trust, claimed Lyons’ business breached a commercial lease agreement for a property in Seabrook, N.H., by vacating the property and not paying the rent.

The realty trust also alleged that Lyons promoted “injustice or fraud upon the plaintiff (because) the corporation was formed and carried on its business without sufficient assets,” according to a court document.

A judge ordered Lyons to pay $42,960 in back rent and real estate taxes and criticized the way Lyons ran the business.

“These facts demonstrate that defendant (Lyons) undercapitalized his corporation, he knew of the corporation’s financial deficiencies but continued to allow the business to incur debt and other legal obligations,” the judge wrote.

When the judgment remained unpaid in September 2006, a judge increased it to $63,061 to cover interest and added legal costs.
Lyons said he has paid the full amount and the case has been settled.

Lyons also encountered more tax troubles last year. While no lien was filed, the town of Tewksbury issued an “instrument of taking” last November for $20,863 in taxes that were due in May 2009. The taxes were paid on Feb. 2 of this year, according to the Tewksbury tax collector’s office.

Lyons, whose campaign Web page includes the slogan “Declare your independence from higher taxes,” said his experience has taught him how excessive taxation and regulation hurt small businesses.

So this “small business owner” attempted to stiff the government, stiff his landlord, and thumb his nose at the Court.

Sounds like just another typical Massachusetts GOP legislator to me.

Republican Re-Treads!

Is this the best both parties can do?

Former Senator Scott Brown was NOT Senate material.....and Massachusetts voters made a mistake and sent him to Washington. Massachusetts Voters rectified that mistake. Who believes voters will re-visit that mistake? Senator Brown pretended he was an 'independent' candidate who voted in lock-step with Republicans and was mostly lack-luster.

Charlie Baker LOST his gubernatorial race.....for good reason based on ISSUES.

When Massachusetts Republicans whine about losing candidates, maybe they should re-think.

And Martha Coakley? Paleeeze!

Top GOP gov prospects lag Dems in handy cash

Friday, August 9, 2013
By: Erin Smith

Republican powerhouses Scott Brown and Charlie Baker — who are both mulling a run for governor — have almost nothing in the campaign war chests and are lagging way behind several Democrats vying for the Corner Office, records show.

Brown, who told the Herald on Wednesday he will make his decision by the end of summer, had only about $8,000 in his state coffers at the end of June, according to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

The former U.S. senator had $182,543 cash on hand in his federal political action committee as of June, but those funds can’t be used in a state election.

Baker, a former Harvard Pilgrim Health Care CEO, had about $29,000 in his state campaign account as of the end of May, reports show.

State Treasurer Steven Grossman leads the pack of Democratic hopefuls with more than $597,000 in the bank — including $47,400 in new donations in the second half of July alone, according to records.

Former Obama administration official Donald Berwick has raised about $263,000, while Attorney General Martha Coakley, who is considering a run, has more than $278,000 in her war chest, records show.

State Sen. and Cape Air founder Dan Wolf — who is contesting a State Ethics Commission ruling that his airline’s Massport contracts are a conflict of interest and should bar him from elective office — had about $23,000 in his campaign account at the end of June with $25,000 in outstanding liabilities from personal loans, records show.

Health care executive Joseph Avellone reported nearly $39,000, while Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, a potential candidate, had $139,500 in his coffers at of the end of 2012 but more than $101,000 in outstanding liabilities.

Coy boy Brown says “there’s nothing wrong with a (GOP) primary” against Baker

MEN OF MYSTERY: GOP power players Scott Brown (L) and Charlie Baker (R), are keeping voters guessing about a possible run for governor.

Brown's will-he-or-won't-he moment is either the same coy move he made before declining to run for Senate this year, or the beginning of a massive GOP split

Massachusetts Republicans: Unsuited For Office????

Republicans whine and lament their limited numbers in state political office, willingly pointing fingers at Democratic wrongdoers and then a Republican ATTORNEY who misspent CLIENTS' FUNDS.....?  [I'm a firm believer in the importance of a two party system when the 2nd Party is 'credible,' but Massachusetts Republicans continue to prove themselves unsuited for office.]

The deal says Webster, who runs a private practice in Pembroke, will lose his law license for nine months. Webster admitted to misusing a client’s funds in 2009 and 2010.

POSTED: Friday, February 15, 2013

Dear Massachusetts Republican Party:

Is this the best you can do?

Come on! Ya gotta do better than this!

Ex-representative Daniel Webster seeking GOP state committee seat
By Matt Murphy
Posted Jul 09, 2013

Former state representative Daniel Webster is attempting a comeback to Republican Party politics, seeking a seat on the state committee to counter what he describes as a relationship too cozy between some Republicans and Beacon Hill Democrats and a misplaced focus on trying to win high-profile campaigns for governor and U.S. Senate.

Webster, who abruptly ended his 2012 re-election campaign after narrowly surviving a primary write-in challenge from a former aide, is seeking to replace Rick Greeley as one of two state committeemen from the Second Plymouth & Bristol District.

Greeley is stepping down from the state committee, and a caucus is planned for Thursday night in Halifax to select his replacement. Halifax Republican Town Committeeman Gordon Andrews is also running for the seat.

Webster did not return a call for comment. His voicemail identifies himself as “attorney Daniel Webster” even though his law license won’t be reinstated until November.

During his time in the Legislature, Webster became one of the House's most conservative members representing a district from 2003 through 2012 that now includes Pembroke, Duxbury and Hanson.
Democrat Josh Cutler of Duxbury succeeded him in the House.

Senator Scott Brown: Racially-Tinged Tactic

The is no more deceptive and devious exploiter of ethnicity than Scott Brown. From attacking Elizabeth Warren because she admitted her Native American Heritage, to the tomahawk taunts of his campaigners, to now hiring homeless African Americans to wear shirts that say " Obama Supporters for Brown", Scott Brown is worse than George Wallace, David Duke and Bull Connor ever was. At least with them we know where they stood. With Scott Brown he stands like a handsome stooge trying to appeal to Women and the poor, yet he has systematically voted against aid to the poor and support the very businesses that have continued the vicious cycle of oppression that we now find ourselves in. We need to rise up as a group and call Scott Brown what he is.

Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown is under fire for a racially-tinged campaign tactic in his contentious 2012 U.S. Senate race.

According to the Boston Herald, the GOP candidate has been paying small sums of money to homeless people of color to campaign on his behalf in largely minority neighborhoods.

Some have been spotted in “Obama Supporters for Scott Brown” t-shirts, although the president an ardent supporter of Brown’s opponent, Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

The group is reportedly funded by the Brown campaign, with volunteers earning an $8 an hour to campaign for the incumbent Republican.

According to the Herald, “The effort for Brown comes after recent Warren endorsements by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and leading black ministers, a blow to the Brown camp’s hopes for heavy city electioneering support.”

Polls have recently shown the race neck-and-neck or with Warren leading Brown by a thin margin.

Lakeville Republican Keiko Orrall won after being outspent

Lakeville Republican Keiko Orrall won after being outspent
State House News Service

LAKEVILLE — Lakeville Republican Keiko Orrall bucked a campaign finance trend by defeating an opponent who outspent her during the run up to a special election in September.

Orrall’s win flipped the 12th Bristol seat from Democratic control for the first time in more than 30 years. In addition to New Bedford and Lakeville, the district includes parts Taunton, Middleboro and Freetown.

Campaign finance statistics released Monday show Middleboro Democrat Roger Brunelle, a commercial and industrial painter and 19-year member of a painters union, outspent Orrall, $39,727 to $26,179 and also benefited from $11,475 in independent expenditures from the Massachusetts Teachers Association and $6,301 from 1199 SEIU. Brunelle also received support from Lt. Gov. Tim Murray.

Orrall’s campaign contributions included $8,636 from the Marlborough Republican City Committee and $3,241 from the Republican State Committee.

Orrall won the seat given up by Stephen Canessa, a New Bedford Democrat who left to take a post at Southcoast Health Systems. Voters in Lakeville turned out in greater numbers than nearby New Bedford precincts, choosing Orrall by a three-to-one margin. Brunelle won New Bedford handily but the small turnout there, less than 11 percent, helped Orrall.

Just thinking.....Senator Brown to the rescue?

Doesn't it seem contradictory that Republicans who eschew Big Government, the "Nanny State," government bailouts, increased taxes, entitlements, should suddenly seek funding to address the dilemma's of their constituents?

In
Let's ship jobs overseas......
there's a list of state senators and representatives who oppose increased taxes.
It seems a simple equation. If you oppose taxes, don't you also oppose the expectation of government services?

Brown surveys storm damage in Scituate
Politicians seek money for repairs; community reaches out to help victims

SCITUATE — Carmen Tirado has been stranded in the cafeteria of Scituate High School for five days. She and her family have been stuck at the town’s evacuee shelter since their house on Jericho Road flooded during Sunday’s nor’easter, and they are still waiting on any sort of aid to come through.

The Tirados’ situation was among those Senator Scott Brown witnessed during his tour of Scituate yesterday afternoon. The Massachusetts Republican toured the breach of the sea wall caused by the big storm and visited the evacuees remaining at the shelter.

“There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle,’’ Brown said. “We’ll need cooperation from the federal, private, and state agencies to solve the problems, and they are very large.’’

State and local officials say it could cost millions of dollars to repair damage left by the storm, which flooded dozens of residences, cut power to 1,000 residents, severely damaged the sea wall, and led to fires at two waterfront homes.

Even before the recent storm, Scituate was seeking other help. A storm damaged a stretch of the sea wall in 2007, and the town is still waiting for most of the estimated $800,000 in federal help for repairs from that incident.

The federal government, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, awarded $100,000 to Scituate in 2007 as part of a small sea wall project. But the rest of the money will not come to the town until it begins the repairs, and the work has not yet started.

“The way FEMA works is the project work has to start before reimbursement can begin. . . . It’s still moving forward,’’ said James Mannion, the state Emergency Management Agency representative for Scituate.

State Representative James M. Cantwell, Republican of Marshfield, who represents Scituate, is attempting to secure funds from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, an agency that awarded $100,000 to Marshfield for sea wall damage from a storm in May.

In addition, he is hoping to establish a statewide fund in the future to assist with sea wall repairs for other communities.

“There are no current funds available, so what I’m trying to do is go at it from several different angles,’’ he said.

Cantwell is also pushing for more flexibility in Community Preservation Funds, which can only be used for low-income housing, creation of open space and recreation areas, and preservation of historic structures.

In the meantime, Brown and his field representatives collected information from Scituate evacuees to help them contact other government agencies for help.

For Brown, the story gave him hope for optimism.

“A lot of the folks down there have been saying that they are in fact very grateful for the response the community of Scituate has given them,’’ Brown said. “I mean, someone offered up their home, said, here, take it. . . . You don’t just see that anymore. It’s really refreshing to see and uplifting.’’

The Party of NO!

31 Bills Republicans Have Blocked in 2010
By the time President Obama was sworn into office in January 2009, America was losing 600,000 jobs a month. Within 6 months of passing the Economic Stimulus Bill (which was opposed by every single House Republican and all but 3 Senate Republicans), those job losses were reduced by two-thirds.

That was a good start.

Yet, despite the marked improvement, Republicans continued to block dozens of job creation, business and economic development, and consumer protection bills right through September of 2010, stalling the recovery.

You have every right to ask why. Did they want Obama to fail due to philosophical differences? Or was it because, as the ones who were most responsible for the biggest economic collapse since the Great Depression, they knew that economic recovery credited to the Democrats would spell political devastation for the Republican Party for years to come?

Why did they choose to spend their time doing everything they could to make the President fail, instead of spending their time trying to make America succeed?

Whose side are they really on?

Here is a partial listing of journalistic news reports from (primarily) mainstream news sources of Bills the Republicans Have Blocked – or attempted to block -- during the past 20 months. These are the actual article headlines. I’ve provided several media links to confirm and verify the accuracy of each article.

It’s an eye-opener.

Republican obstructionism . . . is based on the idea that the failure not just of President Obama but of American society itself is the G.O.P.’s quickest ticket back to power.

Are they listening? The Governor is #2

Step back and consider the definitions.
.
We have institutional bureaucracies that don't want to surrender authority, autonomy or personnel, even though they, if they were honest, recognize the problems.
.
We have legislators who don't want anyone mad at them, much less an organized union. And many don't want to admit that they helped create the "mess."
.
And we have the Beacon Hill Republicans who are becoming more like a bad comedy routine with each passing day, repeating the same losing rhetoric:
.
Taxes = Evil
.
.
Well, guess what guys? Voters have finally figured out that's what got us here and they're unwilling to throw grandma or the special needs child or the handicapped adult under that train.
.
The phony propaganda about job losses doesn't fly either because it was used in the past and the sky didn't fall as Republicans predicted.
.
We risked an end of world calamity by raising the minimum wage.
.
Note to self: Call the Republicans and tell them it didn't happen! Don't forget to mention that it would be nice to have a viable 2ND party in the state but they seem hell bent on destroying what little is left.
.

.

Attend one of the forums and watch the people who promise to buy 'junk food' or 'alcohol' if the sales tax exemptions are lifted. No one is going to drive to NH to buy Twinkies!
