Initially unhappy and unresponsive in his kennel, Mowgly sprang to life once his daily walks began. This lively, energetic boy is light on his feet and loves the outdoors. He'll turn his face to the wind, inhaling the cool air, or gaze up at the sky, squinting and smiling as he soaks up the sun. If given the opportunity Mowgly could probably walk for hours. He can be a bit of a leash puller, however, and could use some lessons in proper manners. As well, he can get overly anxious when encountering other dogs. In both cases, Mowgly will readily respond to firm, consistent correction. He is happy to please and, even though he enjoys attention, he does not crave it. He is a confident, intelligent dog and should thrive given the proper amount of exercise, activity, and fresh air. His ideal home should be experienced with huskies, or similar breeds. And, since he does have issues with resource guarding, an adult only home would be best. BEHAVIOR: Mowgly walks calmly on leash. He was calm and relaxed during handling, but was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Mowgly growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl and rawhide tests. He was not interested in toys. Mowgly rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog; when close, growls and snaps. N.B. (added by 0670): As per Mowgly's previous owner, he is housetrained, has mixed reactions to dogs, has not lived with cats, and is friendly toward children but may "bully" them. Previous owner reports cage aggression and possession aggression. Mowgly should not go to home with children or with other dogs. Look: 2. He's a calm and compliant companion who enjoys the sights, sounds, and smells of a walk in the park. He can sit and listen intently from an inviting bench without feeling the need to participate in surrounding activity He can search for minutes at a time without lifting his nose off the ground, and without the frantic pace that sometimes comes with investigation. When it's time again to alert a passerby that a walk would be nice, the vocalizing and jumping up begins again (though much less anxiously). Simply put: Sam does not enjoy confinement. When the kennel door opens, the leash is looped, and Sam exits his kennel, he becomes the well behaved boy previously described. It's a tale of two Sams. He must miss the pleasure and safety of friends and family. Though he enjoys the attention he gets at the shelter, Sam expects more. And rightly so. He would be the perfect fit for someone who understands that there's no such thing as a perfect dog. But set him free, watch his imperfection fade, and Sam will come pretty close. He could easily get the job of pitbull ambassador: he looks the part of tough guy, but his temperament is that of a stuffed toy. He has perfect manners both in and outside of the kennel. He politely waits his turn, follows his human companion out the door, and behaves like a gentleman when in the company of others. City seems to appreciate life. As he enjoys a good walk, he'll stop periodically to take in the surroundings, breathe in the fresh air. He is a dog who's comfortable in his own skin, mature and easygoing. City is, truly, a nice dog. When he arrived at the shelter as an abandoned animal, he had a bloody laceration on one side of his face.The medical staff was unable to assess or clean the wound due to his behavior. Because of this, he was to be approached cautiously. It's not too impossible to believe that this was a substitute City who, after leaving his medical appointment, was replaced by real City- affectionate, friendly, and the least difficult one can imagine. We CAN imagine that he must have been in inordinate pain to have reacted the way he did. In the here and now, real City still has the laceration on his face, stapled and healing slowly. In spite of his earlier difficulties, and more to the point, City's SAFER results were excellent. He aced the food, rawhide, and toy items, engaging in each with gusto, giving each up readily when challenged. He allowed, and allows, all types of handling and especially enjoys a nice rump rub. City is likely housetrained and seems confident when around other dogs, though not confrontational. He would make an excellent pet for an experienced family looking for a low maintenance buddy. As we venture outside, her nerves are slightly on edge. Her eyes dart from side to side as the cars wiz by, the horns blare. But she walks on, sticking close and looking up for reassurance. As we wait for the light to change, Toes jumps up. We stare at one another, her legs wrapped around my waist, my hands on her face. My words are encouraging. Then off we go again. Toes is curious about her surroundings and her leash manners are quite good. She perks up and focuses on a quick moving squirrel until he's out of sight. Though you'd never know it from her intake picture, Toes is a lithe, shapely young girl- a unique mixture of breeds, part shepard, part rottie?- and her face is quite stunning: dark piercing eyes headlining a solemn, intelligent expression. Her coat is slick and clean and she seems to have been well cared for, albeit relatively under socialized for someone so young. Even so, she has shown more than a passing interest in people as well as other dogs. She approaches both cautiously, but her level of confidence increases each day. Likely housetrained, sweet Toes has the makings of a wonderful family pet. With a little time and a few high value treats, she'll be on her toes hugging you for joy.
