Last year, Senate Republicans called on infamous
climate denier Roy Spencer to testify before Congress to question the degree to
which humans are causing climate change. On Thursday, Spencer took to
his blog to call his critics Nazis. This comment is not only obscenely
offensive, but also reveals a profound and dangerous misunderstanding of climate
change — both of which should disqualify him from testifying in front of
Congress on climate science.
Senator David Vitter (R-LA) is the minority-ranking
member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and, in this
capacity, is responsible for inviting Spencer to speak. Now, in the aftermath of
Spencer's offensive and anti-science rant, we should act to hold Spencer's
backers, like Vitter, accountable.
Sign the petition calling on Sen. Vitter and minority members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to denounce Spencer’s extreme remarks and commit to never inviting him to testify again. Sign now, and we’ll deliver it to Senator Vitter’s
office.
Spencer’s comment was more than a passing insult. In
Spencer's testimony before Congress last July, he concluded that the evidence of
human-caused climate change is “equivocal, at best.” Yesterday, unable to defend
his conclusions, he turned to insults — describing his climate critics, he
writes “Like the Nazis, they are anti-capitalist. They are willing to sacrifice
millions of lives of poor people at the altar of radical environmentalism.”
The right to free speech applies equally to everybody
— including blowhards like Dr. Spencer. But as someone who repeatedly delivers
congressional testimony and has direct influence on policy, he should be held to
higher professional standards. Now is the time for us to make our case: someone
who equates his academic critics with mass murderers fails to meet those
standards.
