CAMP EDWARDS — The Air Force Civil Engineer Center, responsible for part of the cleanup of groundwater contamination at Joint Base Cape Cod, has proposed plans to clean up two sites on the base — a fuel storage area and a fire training area.
Public comments on the two proposals will be accepted through May 30. The plans also will be discussed at the May 14 meeting of the Joint Base Cape Cod Cleanup Team. The meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. at the visitors center, 1805 West Outer Road, on the base. The public can attend the meeting by showing a valid photo ID at the Bourne or Sandwich gates.
In both cases, the Air Force is proposing to deal with contamination at the two sites through a process called monitored natural attenuation, which is essentially allowing any contamination to dilute from the groundwater over time without treatment. The military also would put controls on how the land is used and would restrict the use of any wells, according to the plan.
The fuel storage site was used from the 1950s to 2009, and the firefighter training site, which also had a fuel storage tank, was abandoned in 1956.
According to the center, recent testing suggests both sites are stable.
Comments on the proposals, which are on file at Upper Cape libraries or online at http://states.ng.mil/sites/MA/JBCC/afcec.html, can be made by mail or email to: Douglas Karson, AFCEC/JBCC, 322 East Inner Road, Otis ANG Base, MA 02542-5028 or douglas_karson@us.af.mil.
