US Recruits Iraq Security 'Advisers' --The US Army looks to beef up its 'Office of
Security Assistance', despite Barack Obama ruling out sending troops back to
Iraq. 19 Aug 2014 Barack Obama may have ruled out sending "boots on the
ground" back to Iraq but in the face of a growing threat from the Islamic State
(IS), the Pentagon appears to have hit upon a way to get them back in by the
back door. The US Army's Contracting Command has issued a tender notice for
companies capable of deploying security assistance mentors and advisers in Iraq.
These individuals would be required for a 12-month contract, potentially
extendable to a total of 36 months...The
"sources sought" document was published on August 11 by the US Army on a federal
website with the intent to canvas private organisations to
establish whether they were capable of supplying the
services.
As predictable as rain: US official: Military has been asked to send more troops to
Iraq 20 Aug 2014 The State
Department has asked the Pentagon to send additional troops to Iraq, according
to a U.S. official. The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of
anonymity, said that the number of personnel requested is fewer than 300...The
State Department wants additional security personnel to be stationed "in and
around Baghdad," according to the official. The official would not say
specifically where the troops would go.
Obama says U.S. will be 'relentless' in pursuing Islamic
State 20 Aug 2014 A clearly furious
President Obama condemned the Islamic militants who claimed responsibility for
beheading an American journalist, vowing Wednesday to beat back "this cancer"
and showing no sign of constraining the
U.S. military intervention in Iraq. As 14 new U.S. airstrikes
pounded Islamic State positions, the grisly video and photos of a masked
militant killing James Foley ricocheted around the Internet...In the video,
the executioner speaks English with a
British accent, and U.S. and British authorities scrambled to
identify him. British Prime Minister David Cameron told the BBC that it was
"extremely likely" the killer was a British citizen.
U.S. troops entered Syria in failed attempt to free Foley,
others --One U.S.
soldier was wounded. 20 Aug 2014 Several dozen U.S. special forces
troops flew into Syria last month in a bid to rescue several Americans held by
the Islamic State, including journalist James Foley, but they pulled out after
discovering that the captives had been moved, senior U.S. officials said
Wednesday. One U.S. soldier was wounded. The raid, which took place over the
July 4 weekend, is the first known instance of U.S. troops entering Syria since
the brutal civil war erupted there in mid-2012.
Secret U.S. Mission in Syria to Rescue American Hostages
Fails 20 Aug 2014 A US secret
military mission had "recently" tried but failed "to free a number of American
hostages held in Syria", the Pentagon has revealed. It did not say whether the
US troops had also tried to rescue US journalist James Foley, a video of whose
beheading by Islamic State appeared on Tuesday. However, senior US officials -
speaking on condition of anonymity - said this was the case. IS said Foley's
death was revenge for US air strikes on its fighters in Iraq.
Masked Man With English Accent 'Beheads US Journalist James
Foley in Video' 20 Aug 2014
[Mossad-trained, US-armed] Islamic State militants [?] have
released a video that purportedly shows the beheading of a US journalist who
went missing two years ago. The footage appears to show a masked man - speaking in English with an English
accent - killing James Foley, who was seized by armed men in
Syria in November 2012. In the five-minute video, posted on social media sites
by Islamic State sources, the man says Mr Foley was being killed because Barack
Obama had ordered airstrikes against IS positions in northern Iraq.
Terrorist beheadings could happen in Australia, Tony Abbott
warns as he pushes tougher security laws 21 Aug 2014 Horrific acts of terrorism such as the "truly sickening
and utterly evil" beheading of journalist James Foley could happen in Western
countries including Australia, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said. Speaking in
Melbourne on Thursday morning, Mr Abbott said the revelation that Mr Foley's
killer appeared to be British was a reminder that such atrocities were not
distant events. Mr Abbott said the murder of the American journalist - the
online video of which has now been authenticated by US intelligence agencies -
bolstered the case for stronger counter-terrorism laws and
resourcing.
Mother of Russian journalist missing in Ukraine addresses Red
Cross for help 20 Aug 2014 The
mother of Russian photojournalist, Andrey Stenin, missing in war-torn eastern
Ukraine, has addressed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to
help find her son. Vera Stenina told RT that she addressed the ICRC "because
they are looking for missing relatives. And I had hopes that I will be helped
there." An experienced war photographer, Stenin, who works for the Rossiya
Segodnya news agency (formerly RIA Novosti), disappeared on August 5 as he was
covering the Ukrainian army's campaign against the anti-Kiev rebels in the
country's southeastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
Ah, then came the dawn. Kiev fights in Ukraine's southeast for shale gas deposits to
be controlled by US - Pushkov 16 Aug
2014 The control over Ukraine's southeast is important for Kiev first of all
because of the shale gas deposits, which Western countries should be developing,
head of the State Duma's international affairs committee Aleksey Pushkov said on
Saturday. "Kiev is fighting in Ukraine's east for the gas reserves: Germany says
the reserves make 5,578 billion cubic metres (bcm) [the U.S. reserves are 8,976
bcm]. Control will be from the U.S.," he wrote on Twitter. The Yuzivska shale
gas field is at the border between the Kharkov and Donetsk regions. The
resources are estimated at over four trillion cubic metres.
Air strikes and
rocket fire resume as Gaza negotiations collapse 19 Aug 2014 Hours before a ceasefire was set to expire between
Israel and Hamas, negotiations in Cairo have collapsed and rockets and air
strikes have resumed. A deal on the status of Gaza or an extension of talks was
expected at midnight tonight. However the Israeli delegation in Egypt has been
sent back to Tel Aviv.
Israel bars Amnesty and HRW from
entering Gaza, hinders investigations - report [Yeah, they're not welcome in Ferguson,
Missouri, either.] 19 Aug 2014 Israel has been preventing Amnesty
International and Human Rights Watch workers from entering Gaza to investigate
allegations of war crimes and human rights violations, claims a media report
backed by group members' statements. Both human rights organizations have been
unsuccessfully trying to get permission from the regional Civil Administration
to enter Gaza since July 7, Israeli outlet Haaretz reports...While both HRW and
Amnesty International have been actively trying to obtain permission from Israel
to enter the Gaza Strip, their requests have been turned down on seemingly
bureaucratic grounds.
US *dying* to get the pandemic party
started: Over 1,100 pathogen leaks in US labs in 5 years - CDC
report 18 Aug 2014 US labs
mishandled dangerous biomaterials at least 1,100 times between 2008 and 2012,
according to hard-to-access statistics collated by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), and obtained by USA Today. The data, which is for
the latest year available, was presented to Congress last month following an
uproar over the exposure of more than 60 CDC staff to live deadly
anthrax bacteria in a top Atlanta lab in June, and received by the US
newspaper following a direct legal request. The hearings provoked the
resignation of lab chief Michael Farrell, but the statistics covering about
1,400 licensed facilities handling dangerous materials show that the failures
are systemic.

Anyone Crossing Sierra Leone Border

shot 20 Aug 2014 (WV) A South

had an immediate reaction to a flu shot administered by another Thomas nurse 15
years ago. Dean filed the lawsuit last week in Kanawha County Circuit Court, the
Charleston Gazette reported.
Julian Assange plans to leave Ecuadorian embassy a free man
after changes to UK laws 18 Aug 2014
Julian Assange plans to walk out of Ecuador's embassy a free man, avoiding
arrest and extradition to Sweden to face questioning about sexual assault and
rape allegations. In an exclusive interview with Fairfax Media, Mr Assange said
he anticipated legal reforms in Britain would facilitate a resolution of his
circumstances and end the prospect of his extradition to Sweden. The WikiLeaks
publisher flummoxed the international
media on Monday by telling reporters in
London that he will "soon" be leaving his refuge in Ecuador's London embassy,
but not elaborating on how long "soon" might be or the circumstances in which he
will end his diplomatic asylum.
Julian Assange to leave Ecuadorian embassy
'soon' 18 Aug 2014 Julian Assange
has told a press conference in London that he will leave the Ecuadorian embassy
that has been his home for the past two years soon - but not
imminently...Assange noted that a "highly decorated journalist in Iceland" had
confirmed that he was leaving the embassy "soon", but not for the reasons
believed, an apparent reference to his health. But afterwards WikiLeaks's
spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson made clear the rumours of Mr Assange's imminent
departure weren't true.

Tuesday that both of the officers opened fire on Powell when he came within a

guard 18 Aug 2014 Some 2,500
endangered sea turtles have made their annual descent on Nicaragua's Pacific

eggs, the army said Monday. The first 1,400 Olive Ridley turtles arrived to nest
Thursday at the Chacocente Wildlife Refuge on the Central American country's
southern coast, regional military commander Jose Larios told the Nuevo Diario
newspaper. They were followed by hundreds more on Friday and Saturday, said
Larios, whose troops are guarding a 1,500-meter stretch of beach where
the turtles lay their eggs. [*Awesome!*]
