Pentagon to deploy 400 troops to train Syrian
'rebels' | 16 Jan 2015 | The U.S. military
is planning to deploy more than 400 troops to help train Syrian rebels to fight explode the Islamic State,
along with hundreds of U.S. support personnel, a Pentagon spokesman told Reuters
on Thursday. The U.S. military has not yet identified where it will draw its
forces from for the training mission, expected to begin in the spring at sites
outside Syria, Colonel Steve Warren said. Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have
offered to host the training.

Jan 2015 | David Cameron could block WhatsApp
and Snapchat if he wins the next election, as part of his plans for new
surveillance powers announced in the wake of the shootings in Paris. The Prime
Minister said today that he would stop the use of methods of communication that
cannot be read by the security services even if they have a warrant...The
comments came as part of David Cameron's pledge to revive the
"snoopers' charter" to help
security services spy on internet communications today.
German who spied for CIA stole list of 3,500 German spies'
names | !5 Jan 2015 | A German intelligence
officer, who was arrested last summer for spying for the United States, may have
given his American handlers information on the real identities, as well as
operational aliases, of nearly 3,500 German intelligence operatives. In July,
Germany expelled the Central Intelligence Agency station chief in Berlin,
following the arrest of Marcus R., a 31-year-old,
low-level clerk at the Bundesnachrichtendienst, or BND, Germany's external
intelligence agency. He was believed at the time to have spied for the CIA for
approximately two years, and to have supplied the American spy agency with
around 200 classified German government documents in exchange for approximately
30,000.
The CIA Will Not Discipline Anyone for Spying on Senate Torture
Probe | 14 Jan 2015 | A CIA inquiry has
cleared spy agency employees of wrongdoing in a dispute with the Senate
Intelligence Committee over allegations CIA officials inappropriately accessed
documents prepared by Senate investigators probing the agency's use of brutal interrogation techniques
torture. In a statement issued by the CIA on Wednesday, the head of the inquiry,
former U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, said an "Agency Accountability Board" which he
chaired at the request of CIA Director John Brennan had found that "no
discipline was warranted" for five agency employees. However, Sen. Dianne
Feinstein, who chaired the Intelligence Committee during its investigation of
the CIA's post-September 11, 2001, detention and interrogation program,
expressed dissatisfaction with the inquiry's result.
German police arrest two Salafist suspects in
raid | 16 Jan 2015 | German police said on
Friday they had arrested two people following a raid on 11 properties linked to
radical Islamic Salafists, shortly after Belgian police killed two men during
similar raids against an Islamist group. The arrests followed investigations
which have been going on for several months into five Turkish citizens aged 31
to 44, who are suspected of "preparing a serious act of violence against the
state in Syria" and money laundering, police said.

was last night under armed guard after anti-terror commandos shot dead two
suspected Islamic State jihadis and arrested a third in an eastern town. Shots
and explosions were heard, including machine gun fire, as heavily armed, masked
officers moved against the alleged cell in the eastern town of Verviers, which
is some 70 miles from Brussels. 'A second Paris has been avoided,' an official
from Belgium's ministry of justice was quoted as saying, with reports claiming
the jihadis had planned to launch attacks on police in the country.
Two killed in Belgium anti-terror raids | 15 Jan 2015 | Two people were killed Thursday while police
conducted an anti-terrorism operation in eastern Belgium. In a press conference
Thursday, Belgium's federal prosecutor reported that suspects opened fire in
Verviers as police conducted their raid, and they were "neutralized."
The raid was conducted in coordination with 10 search warrants
executed throughout the country. Searches were
taking place in Molenbeek, Brussels and Vilvorde, a federal official told ABC
News.
Charlie Hebdo shooting: French man arrested in Bulgaria 'had links to
Paris attacker' | 13 Jan 2015 | A French
man arrested in Bulgaria had links with one of the attackers in the Paris
shootings, it has been reported. French citizen Fritz-Joly Joachin was in
contact several times with Cherif Kouachi, one of the two brothers who shot dead
12 people at the 'satirical magazine' Charlie Hebdo's offices last week, AFP
quotes prosecutor Darina Slavova as saying. Reuters reported on Monday that
prosecutors planned to extradite Joachin over suspicions he knew or had been in
touch with one of the brothers.
Paris policewoman injured outside President Hollande's palace after
'driver deliberately knocked her down' --Unclear whether hit and run is linked to the terror
attacks in French capital | 15 Jan 2015 | A policewoman has been
deliberately knocked down and injured by a driver outside President Hollande's
palace in central Paris. Witnesses have said the motorist aimed at the officer
outside the Élysée Palace and two people have been arrested. A reporter on BFM
TV in France said the car had been driving the wrong way along a one-way system
before ramming the policewoman and knocking her to the floor
overnight.

| 15 Jan 2015 | Pope Francis, speaking of last week's deadly attacks by Islamist
militants in Paris, has defended freedom of expression, but said it was wrong to
provoke others by insulting their religion and that one could "expect" a
reaction to such abuse. Aboard a plane from Sri Lanka to the Philippines, the
pontiff also gave one of his clearest statements to date on climate change,
saying that he believed that man was primarily responsible and had "gone too
far," and that he hoped this year's Paris conference would take a courageous
stand to protect the environment. Asked about the relationship between freedom
of religion and freedom of expression, Francis, who has condemned the Paris
terrorist attacks, said: "You can't provoke, you can't insult the faith of
others, you can't make fun of faith."
Chief constable warns against 'drift towards police

extremism could lead to a "drift towards a police state" in which officers are
turned into "thought police", one of Britain’s most senior chief constables has
warned. Sir Peter Fahy, chief constable of Greater Manchester, said police were
being left to decide what is acceptable free speech as the efforts against
radicalisation and a severe threat of terrorist attack intensify. It is
politicians, academics and others in civil society who have to define what
counts as extremist ideas, he says...Fahy stressed he supported new
counter-terrorism measures unveiled by the government last week, including bans
on alleged extremist speakers from colleges.
Obama signs bill to renew terrorism risk insurance
program | 13 Jan 2015 | President Obama has
signed into law a renewal of a federal program credited with reviving the market
for insurance against terrorist attacks after its collapse in the aftermath of
9/11. The White House says Obama signed the bill Monday - even though Obama had
previously expressed [for show] reservations about an unrelated provision that
chips away at new regulations on financial instruments called derivatives. The
Senate approved the bill last week on a sweeping 93-4 vote, a day after it was
approved by the House.
Ohio Man Is Charged With Plotting to Bomb U.S. Capitol, After Meeting
With Undercover FBI Operative | 14 Jan 2015
| An Ohio man was arrested Wednesday and accused of planning to attack the U.S.
Capitol, U.S. officials told NBC News. But the officials said the man,
identified as Christopher Cornell, 20, was dealing with an undercover agent the entire
time and was never in a position to carry out his plan. The
officials said that starting in August, Cornell began posting comments on
Twitter in support of ISIS under an alias, Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah. Shortly after
those posts began appearing, the FBI sent
an undercover operative to meet with him.
Ohio bartender contemplated poisoning Boehner: court
documents | 13 Jan 2015 | An Ohio bartender
suspected of wanting to poison U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John
Boehner has been charged with threatening to murder the Republican politician,
court documents showed on Tuesday. Michael Hoyt, who served Boehner at a country
club in Ohio and checked into a psychiatric facility after he was questioned by
police on Oct. 29, was indicted on the charge last Wednesday, court papers said.
"Speaker Boehner is aware of this situation, and sincerely thanks the FBI, the
Capitol Police and local authorities in Ohio for their efforts," his spokesman,
Michael Steel, said in a statement.
U.S. Secret Service dumping senior officials after security
lapses | 15 Jan 2015 | The U.S. Secret
Service will remove four senior officials while another has opted to retire, the
latest shake-up after a series of security lapses at the agency charged with
protecting the president, an agency official said on Wednesday. The official,
speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed Acting Director Joseph Clancy had
told the four assistant directors who oversee the agency's missions of
protection, investigations, technology and public affairs that they must leave
their jobs. The departures represent a house-cleaning within top
management.
Edward Snowden to speak to Hawaii conference | 15 Jan 2015 | NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden will be the feature
speaker at the upcoming ACLU Hawaii First Amendment Conference. However, Snowden
will not make an appearance in person and will speak through a video link from
Moscow, Russia. Snowden, who used to live in Hawaii, worked for consulting firm
Booz Allen Hamilton and rented a home in Waipahu. Snowden is known for leaking
classified information from the National Security Agency...The Davis Levin First
Amendment Conference will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center on Feb.

Saudi blogger faces next 50 lashes as government ignores global
protests | 14 Jan 2015 | Raif Badawi, the
Saudi liberal convicted of publishing a blog, has been told he will again be
flogged 50 times on Friday -- the second part of his 1,000-lash sentence which
also includes a 10-year jail term. The US, Britain and other western governments
had all called for the punishment to be dropped but there has been no sign of
any diplomatic action against Riyadh. Badawi will be given 50 more lashes
outside a mosque in his home city of Jeddah unless a Saudi prison doctor
determines he is not yet fit to face the punishment owing to injuries sustained last Friday. If nothing changes, he will be flogged every
Friday for the next 19 weeks.
Flight at Rome Fiumicino airport evacuated over bomb
threat | 14 Jan 2015 | The passengers of a
Niki flight to Vienna from Fiumicino airport in Rome have been disembarked after
a man told the pilot he had a bomb in his luggage. The plane was isolated for
security checks which found no explosive devices on board. Over 80 passengers of
a Niki Airbus A320 to Vienna were evacuated over a suspected bomb threat after a
man of Slovenian nationality reportedly told the captain that he boarded the
plane with a bomb in his luggage, local media report.

Vladimir Putin has signed the Russian Federation Code of
Administrative Offences into law, including a new article establishing
liability for the violation of mandatory requirements for the labeling of food
products that contain GMOs. Putin signed the new bill on the last day of 2014
TASS news agency reported. The bill which was submitted by
the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Protection and Welfare
(Rospotrebnadzor) imposes fines for vague or unclear labeling on food products
containing genetically modified ingredients.
Radioactive leak at Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant releases tritium
into Alabama environment | 12 Jan 2015 | A
newspaper reports that radioactive water leaked from a tank at an Alabama
nuclear plant, releasing tritium into the environment. The Chattanooga Times
Free Press reports
that the leak occurred last week at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant near
Athens. The Tennessee Valley Authority said a drain line leaked 100 to 200
gallons of water containing tritium levels above 'acceptable' drinking water
standards.
More than three quarters of flu vaccines this year have been
ineffective | 15 Jan 2015 | More than three quarters of people who had the flu
vaccine this year will get the virus anyway, a new study has
found. The percentage of effective injections - 23 per cent - is one of the
worst performances since the government started tracking how well vaccines work
in the 2004-2005 season. The effectiveness has ranged from 10 to 60 per cent
