NHTSA probes ’13 Rogue for air bag issues

Washington — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is opening a preliminary investigation into 195,000 Nissan Rogue vehicles for air bag problems.
NHTSA said it is investigating two unusual but similar complaints of improper air bag deployment on 2013 Nissan Rogue vehicles. Both complaints allege the driver's frontal air bag deployed as a result of a crash but the air bag deployed many seconds — possibly up to a minute or longer — after the crash. Both complaints said the air bag deployed slowly or did not fully inflate.
Air bag issues accounted for 33 percent of the record nearly 64 million vehicles recalled in 2014, or about 21.2 million vehicles, according to Stericycle, a company that tracks recalls.
NHTSA has taken intense interest in them after two high profile recalls: General Motors Co.’s recall of 2.6 million vehicles for ignition defects that led to air bags failing to deploy in older Cobalt, Ion and other cars that are now linked to at least 45 deaths — and the recall of more than 14.5 million vehicles since 2013 by 10 automakers in the United States for vehicles with Takata air bags that could explode and send metal fragments into drivers or passengers causing serious injuries or deaths.
