We’re real close to a win on this one, but we aren’t there yet.
Last year, we called on the Department of Transportation (DOT) to issue strong rules getting unsafe, outdated oil trains off the rails.
DOT responded with new rules, but they don’t go nearly far enough to protect the environment or public safety.
New rules put into place will allow these old railcars to continue rattling through Oregon, without much incentive for operators to upgrade their fleet. These trains travel through sensitive environmental areas carrying hazardous materials – like oil. If those railcars aren’t of the highest standard, then we’re all at risk.
We know what’s at stake if one of these cars spills into the Columbia River Gorge, or leads to a catastrophic explosion in one of our communities.
That’s not a risk I’m willing to take. And I know you’re not either.
It’s time for action. Sign up and help us make the case!
