London terror alert over New Year's Eve attack fears | 27 Dec 2015 | London and other European capitals are on alert amid fears Islamist terrorists are planning an outrage on New Year's Eve. A "friendly" intelligence service has warned a gun or bomb attack could be carried out in crowded places in a major European city between Christmas and New Year, it has emerged. The stark message came as Russian authorities warned citizens to stay at home on Thursday night as the "safest" way of seeing in the New Year...In a separate development, four dedicated regional armed police units could be established amid fears there is insufficient cover to deal with a terror attack outside of London.

 

European capital cities step up security amid warnings of terror attack planned for between Christmas and New Year --Several European capitals have tightened security measures since warning --Austrian capital Vienna stepped up ID checks and CCTV in crowded places | 26 Dec 2015 | Capital cities across Europe could be the target of a terror attack before the New Year, Austrian police has warned after receiving a tip off from a 'friendly' intelligence service. Security measures have since been stepped up around the continent, although no cities were named as targets. Tensions have remained high in Europe since 130 were killed in the Paris attacks. And with refugees and migrants flooding into Europe in record numbers, some fear that extremists could be sneaking in undetected among them.

 

Man arrested in south London on suspicion of terrorism offences | 23 Dec 2015 | Armed police have arrested a man at a south London shop over alleged links to terrorism. The suspect, 31, was arrested just after 5pm on Tuesday evening and detained "on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism". The arrest was planned and followed a joint investigation by Scotland Yard's terrorism command and MI5. Detectives are investigating if the man had links or had been influenced by Isis as part of their inquiries, and police said the arrest was being linked to Islamist terrorism.

 

Explosive device, model of government building found during terrorism raids | 24 Dc 2015 | Indonesian police have seized a suicide bomb and a model of an Indonesian government building that terrorists were allegedly planning to target as the number of suspected terrorists arrested in the lead up to Christmas jumped to 11. National Police spokesman Anton Charliyan said a 35-year-old Uighur, known as Alli, had been arrested Wednesday morning in Bekasi, a city in West Java on the eastern border of Jakarta. He said an explosive device had been found in a car and bomb making materials and a model of a government building had been found in the house in Bekasi.

 

TSA makes it harder for passengers to avoid 'virtual strip search' scanners just in time for the Christmas rush - which will see six million Americans take to the skies --The TSA tweaked guidelines so travelers have to go through the machines --Government agency said it was bringing change to replace pat-downs --Controversial scanners are dotted in airports across the country | 23 Dec 2015 | Air travelers will find it harder to avoid body scanners after airport security protocols were quietly ramped up. The six million Americans who are expected to take to the skies over Christmas could face delays after the Transport Security Administration (TSA) tweaked guidelines so passengers will have to go through the machines, which have been described as 'virtual strip searches'. Homeland Security wrote in a document that the TSA was updating 'the ability of individuals to opt-out of AIR (Advanced Imaging Technology) screening in favor of physical screening.' This now clears the way for the TSA to 'direct mandatory body scanner screening for some passengers as warranted by security considerations,' CBS reported.

 

Homeland Security rejects Minn. request for Real ID extension | 22 Dec 2015 | The federal government has denied a request from the state's political leaders for more time to get compliant with the new Real ID requirement, but it won't immediately imperil the ability of Minnesotans to board commercial flights after Jan. 1. In a letter sent Monday, two assistant secretaries at the Department of Homeland Security wrote to Gov. Mark Dayton (D) that "Minnesota has not provided adequate justification for continued noncompliance with the Real ID standards that would warrant granting your request for extension," the letter stated.

 

NSA, FBI ask judge to dismiss Utah Olympic spying lawsuit | 24 Dec 2015 | The FBI and National Security Agency have asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a former Salt Lake City mayor who claims agencies conducted mass surveillance of emails, texts and phone calls during the city's 2002 Winter Olympics. The agencies filed court documents last week asking a federal judge in Utah to dismiss the case. A judge has not yet made a decision. Attorney Rocky Anderson, who was Salt Lake City's mayor at the time of the games, said that he learned about the program from a 2013 report in the Wall Street Journal and has since confirmed it with an unnamed source who worked for the NSA during the Olympics.

 

Russian warplanes never hit civilian targets in Syria - Air Force chief | 27 Dec 2015 | The head of the Russian Air and Space Forces denied reports that Russian warplanes had hit civilian targets during its two-month counter-terrorism campaign in Syria. The allegations were previously voiced by some rights groups. "I want to say this with dignity. Not a single time did my pilots hit any 'no-go' sensitive targets such as schools, hospitals, mosques or holy sites," Colonel General Viktor Bondarenko said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 news channel. He added that all strikes are carefully prepared by the Russian reconnaissance specialists working with the Syrian Army.

 

Kabul Attack: Taliban Suicide Bomb Near Airport Kills Civilian, Injures 13 | 28 Dec 2015 | A Taliban suicide bomber killed at least one person and wounded 13 in an attack on a road near a school close to Kabul airport, officials said Monday, barely two weeks after a major Taliban assault in the city. Police said the target of the bomber appeared to have been a white pickup truck similar to the kind often used by security contractors in Afghanistan. The truck was partially destroyed in the blast.

 

Houston Mosque Fire Was Intentionally Set, Fire Department Says | 26 Dec 2015 | Investigators in Houston have determined that a fire at a mosque that broke out Friday was intentionally set, the fire department said Saturday. The fire at the Savoy Mosque was reported at around 2:45 p.m. local time (3:45 p.m. ET) on Christmas and swelled to two alarms, causing "significant" damage, the Houston Fire Department said. No one  was hurt, but there were about 200 people inside the mosque in southwest Houston about an hour before the fire began, NBC affiliate KPRC in Houston reported.

 

At Least 4 Injured in Shooting at Wynnsong 16 in Mobile, Alabama | 26 Dec 2015 | According to MPD Spokesperson Charlotte Soilid, police are searching two shooters who fled on foot from the Wynnsong 16 movie theater after shooting and injuring at least four people. MPD originally reported that there were three victims; two 14-year-olds and an 18-year-old. However, they confirmed that a fourth victim was driven to the hospital in a private vehicle.

 

'Non-threatening' leak at Belgian nuclear plant causes shutdown | 25 Dec 2015 | A nuclear reactor in Belgium has been taken offline less than a week after starting up again. A water leak on a generator outside of the plant's nuclear area forced the shutdown. A spokesperson for the Belgian energy company, Electrabel, told news agencies that the Doel 3 reactor near Antwerp had been shut down so the water leak could be repaired...The reactor had only this week been brought back online after a period of inactivity lasting over 18 months due to hairline fractures discovered in the reactor. A similar problem also shut down the Tihange 2 reactor, but both reactors have [insanely] been deemed safe to operate.

 

'William Kristol is terrified that Trump could try 9/11 perpetrators' | 27 Dec 2015 | US neoconservative commentator William (Bill) Kristol is terrified that if Donald Trump becomes president, he might try the perpetrators of the 9/11 coup d'etat for mass murder and high treason, an American scholar and researcher says. Dr. Kevin Barrett, a founding member of the Scientific Panel for the Investigation of 9/11, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Sunday while commenting on a recent interview by Kristol, the founder of the Emergency Committee for Israel, an American neoconservative group associated with the Israel lobby. In an interview with ABC News on Saturday, Kristol called for a third party run in the event Trump wins the Republican Party nomination for the presidency of the United States... Dr. Barrett said he thinks "It's because as Roger Stone recently said on the Alex Jones Show,' Trump knows about 9/11.' People should ask themselves why Trump is constantly bringing up 9/11. Why has he blamed [George W.] Bush for 9/11, and gotten into a big fight over this with Jeb Bush?"

 

Ballot shenanigans in plot to stop Trump --Corporate-owned GOP wants one of their TPP-pushing dirt-bags on the ballot | 24 Dec 2015 | Critics of Republican presidential primary front-runner and billionaire Donald Trump, not having encountered his type of self-reliant, self-funded, brash and blunt candidacy, have taken to lobbing challenges to his ballot access to oppose him. Unsuccessfully, so far. But analysts do point out that getting the GOP nomination actually is a laborious process of lining up dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of delegates who are party faithful, and they wonder if the earthquake-generating candidate can establish the foot soldier network to do that.

Ted Cruz now a clear -- yet distant -- second after a strong debate performance, a new CNN/ORC pollreleased on Wednesday has found. Trump tops the field with 39%, according to the poll of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters. That's more than double the share backing Cruz, who, at 18%, has inched up 2 points since the last CNN/ORC poll, which was taken in late November.

 

Police: 2 People Shot, Killed by Chicago Officer | 26 Dec 2015 | Chicago police say an officer responding to a domestic disturbance shot and killed two people. The Chicago Police Department said in a statement that the shootings happened at about 4:25 a.m. Saturday after responding officers "were confronted by a combative subject" [?!?] on the city's West Side. Police said the shooting is under investigation and the case has been referred to the city's main police oversight [sic] agency.

 

Black Lives Matter holds 'Black Xmas' protests in Minnesota, California | 23 Dec 2015 | Black Lives Matter held demonstrations in Minnesota and California on Wednesday to protest police killings of unarmed blacks, dubbing the day "Black Xmas" to show it could affect the economy on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The loosely organized movement grew out of protests over police killings of black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and other cities. In Minnesota, a demonstration at the Mall of America by protesters angered by the police killing of an unarmed black man in Minneapolis last month was swiftly broken up.

 

Extreme weather continues to slam Midwest, South as fatalities rise | 28 Dec 2015 | Severe weather that created a series of deadly tornadoes and flash flooding that killed at least 43 people across the Midwest and South was expected to continue Monday as governors across the affected regions declared states of emergency. A string of deadly tornadoes in the Dallas area killed at least 11 people. The state of Texas is seeing heavy rains, floods and bracing for what is feared will be an "epic" snowstorm.

 

'Extremely Dangerous' Tornado Reported Outside Dallas as Storm Death Toll in South Reaches 17 | 26 Dec 2015 | A "large and extremely dangerous" tornado was confirmed south of Dallas, Texas Saturday afternoon as the death toll from severe storms throughout the South this week has risen to 17. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reported two more deaths Saturday, bringing the total in the state to 10. The two additional deaths in Bexar County were originally considered missing. The National Weather Service this afternoon issued a tornado watch today for 49 counties in Texas, including Dallas County, the state's second most populous after Harris County.

 

On Christmas, warm greetings from the East - really warm | 26 Dec 2015 | Dozens of record high temperatures were set Christmas Day along the East Coast from New York to Florida for the third straight day. New York City had its warmest Christmas on record, when the temperature reached 66 degrees shortly after midnight in Central Park, the National Weather Service said. John F. Kennedy International Airport (64 degrees) and Islip on Long Island (65 degrees) also set record highs for Dec. 25...Portland, Maine (62) and Wheeling, West Va.(60) also broke longstanding records.

 

Polar Bear Numbers to Fall as Arctic Ice Shrinks | 25 Dec 2015 | Polar bear populations are likely to fall by more than 30 percent by around mid-century as global warming thaws Arctic sea ice, according to experts who have conducted the most detailed review of the predators to date. The report, by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), estimated there are between 22,000 and 31,000 polar bears in the Arctic and said they will be increasingly vulnerable as their habitat shrinks...The shrinkage in sea ice, which in September 2012 was the most severe since satellite records began, will make it ever harder for polar bears to catch seals that live on the ice, the report said.
