On Tuesday afternoon, I stood beside four fearless women as they told a crowd gathered at the State House why they're fighting to stop gas infrastructure expansions in their communities.
Maria Connelly from South Coast Neighbors United, Marla Marcum from Resist the Pipeline, Alice Arena from Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station, and Bri McAlevey from No Sharon Gas Pipeline understand that the fossil fuel industry is already exacting a terrible price on people across the Commonwealth, in the form of carbon pollution, climate change, and the risk of accidents.
As Maria told the crowd this week, the gas tanks proposed for Acushnet would each be as large as Gillette Stadium, and will loom over neighborhoods, schools, daycares, and nursing homes. Adding insult to injury, industry is now lobbying for a tax that will force Massachusetts ratepayers to pay for the very polluting infrastructure that threatens their towns and neighborhoods.
Any day now, the Massachusetts House of Representatives will release a major energy bill that will determine whether we harness our abundant renewable energy resources or lock in our reliance on polluting fossil fuels.
