CounterCurrents: Adivasis Dance Today: The First Ever FIR Filed Against Durga Puja

Dear Friend,

Durga pooja and Dussehra may be a day of celebration of Brahmanic Hindus of India. But not for the Adivasis. It is also the day when their ancestors/gods are killed and their killing is being celebrated. But not anymore. A case has been slapped upon people who celebrate Mahishasura vadh. For the first time in the history of India, the Adivasis have asserted culturally against the celebration of Mahishasura vadh.

Nagesh Chaudhari writes an important narrative on Baliraja. What India really needs is a Bali Rajya not Gandhi's Ram Rajya

Mirza Yawar Baig gives an excellent exposition of the ethical dilemmas we face in our daily life. It's a must read

Also more stories from around the world.

Adivasis Dance Today: The First FIR Filed Against Durga Puja
by Dr Goldy M. George

Baliraja And His Legacy
by Nagesh Chaudhari

That the Asuras or Daityas or Rakshasas were the people who ruled this land is evident from the texts of the Aryans and memoirs of the Bahujans. Bali is remembered in various festivals throughout India – the Bihu festival in Assam, Balipratipada across central and north India, and Onam in south India

Anti-Black Racism Colors Pittsburg Penguins Invite To Trump White House
by Irwin Jerome

President Trump initially invited the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors – a predominately Black American team, that is supportive of the current ‘Take-a-Knee’ protest that is erupting in American Sports – to come to the White House in honor of their recent NBA Championship victory. But when their super star guard, Stephen Curry, made some disparaging remarks about the invitation, Trump revoked the invite and instead invited the twice reigning Stanley Cup champion Pittsburg Penguins, an all white team, to come to the White House in their stead. That’ when the shit began to hit the fan!

Two Shocking Indian Rape Judgments
by Asian Human Rights Commission

In the first, the Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended the sentences of three law students convicted of raping and blackmailing their female classmate, on the basis of unrelated and irrelevant aspects of the survivor’s lifestyle. In the second judgment, the Delhi High Court acquitted Mahmood Farooqui, a film director and artist, of raping a researcher in March 2015, on the basis that the testimony of the survivor was not reliable. The judgment bizarrely stated that, “Instances of woman behaviour are not unknown that a feeble “no” may mean a “yes”. This ridiculous basis for reversing the conviction once again shows how little judges in India understand the concept of consent.

Will Supreme Court Order Rein Cow Vigilantism
by Moin Qazi

India has been bedeviled by a spate of gruesome lynchings. And at the epicenter of the country’s violent upheaval is the indolent cow which is considered sacred by Hindus .The targeted communities    have lately got  some breathing  space after being under the grip of lynch mafias only    when the country’s highest court stepped into action

Leave Love Alone!
by Firos BF

It is unlikely that the rightwing will succeed in its ghoulish motives in a state like Kerala. But the disharmony and mutual hatred that the rightwing elements sow using such nasty campaigns can have long-term ramifications in the state known for its lovely syncretism. The question we need to ask is: How long the purveyors of hatred keep on sprinkling communal venom into the fabulous realms of man-woman relationships? Will they leave love alone?

It’s Not My Fault: Owning Personal Authority
by Mirza Yawar Baig

Living is about choosing. To take a stand is a choice. To do nothing is also a choice. And all choices have price tags. That is why I ask myself, “If not now, then when?If not me, then who?”

Myopia And Mayhem Running Amok In Myanmar
by Fazal M. Kamal

Indications are that leaders in both the adjacent countries have one factor in common: they’ve got caught in a cleft stick.

Hitler, Churchill, Trump, Aung San Suu Kyi & Genocidal Intent To Destroy
by Dr Gideon Polya

The UN Genocide Convention defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part”. Hitler sought and effected “removal” and “annihilation” of the Jews, Churchill hated and thence deliberately starved 7 million Indians to death, and both sought to cover it up. In 2017 Trump vows to “to totally destroy North Korea”, Aung San Suu Kyi white-washes Myanmar’s    Rohingya Genocide,  a deferential EU won’t even use the term Rohingya, and Mainstream media ignore the carnage of America’s ongoing Muslim Genocide and Muslim Holocaust.

Economic Sanctions Against Russia Flop
by Eric Zuesse

The first comprehensive study of anti-Russia sanctions shows they hit EU much more than Russia.

The Woes (And Joys For Some) Of Capitalism
by Sally Dugman

Yes, in the final reckoning, we cannot expect our governments to provide for us the necessary changes to improve the quality of life for the majority of humanity. It is up to us to do so and, as Eleanor Roosevelt so rightly points out, doing so IS an ethical imperative!

Kashmir: Exposing The Myth Behind The Narrative
by Abdul Majid Zargar

Khalid Bashir’s Kashmir: Exposing the Myth Behind the Narrative is an excellent book which puts various issues pertaining to kashmir’s history in proper perspective .It exposes a particular interest or class of interests behind various such issues.

Living My Own Religion
by Pratap Antony

And what is my religion you may ask?! My religion is the one I just made up, all by myself, only for me – it is LALL – Live And Let Live. This is the code of LALL which I also just made up
