The GOP’s Tax Bill Is A Turkey No Pardon Can Save
GOP lawmakers think their budget means tax cuts for the rich are finally within reach, if they can hold on a little longer. But they're wrong; we' re going to stop them. We won't let this stinker slide through.
House Budget Vote Fast Tracks Massive Tax Cuts
216 GOP House Members Just Voted to Destroy the Safety Net and Deliver a Trillion-Dollar Tax Cut to the Rich. Common Dreams:“The GOP-controlled House of Representatives on Thursday narrowly passed a Senate-approved budget resolution that moves Republicans one step closer to their ultimate goal of delivering massive tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and imposing ‘grotesque’ and ‘heartless’ cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other life-saving safety net programs. The final vote tally was 216-212, with 20 Republicans defecting from their party. No Democrats backed the measure. Frank Clemente, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness, called the GOP budget an ‘immoral calamity’ in a statement following Thursday’s vote. ‘The Republicans in the House have just advanced an immoral tax plan that will have disastrous real-world consequences for many millions of Americans,’ Clemente said. ‘It’s a calamity of their own making, and voters will remember it.'”
Trump Declares Unfunded Opioid Crisis
Trump declares opioid crisis a public health emergency; critics say plan falls short. WaPo:“President Trump on Thursday called the nation’s opioid epidemic the “worst drug crisis in American history,” saying his administration is declaring it a public health emergency and putting its full resolve into overcoming the widespread scourge. The announcement, however, fell well short of what many health advocates had urged and was roundly criticized by Democratic lawmakers, particularly for what they said is insufficient funding to truly address a crisis claiming an estimated 100 lives or more per day.”
Kobach’s Plan To Gut Voting Rights
Unsealed documents show Kris Kobach is dead set on suppressing right to vote. Common Dreams:“For almost a year, Kris Kobach, the secretary of state of Kansas, has struggled to hide the truth about his efforts to lobby the Trump administration to make it much harder for Americans to vote. Part of that struggle ended today when a federal court ordered excerpts of Kris Kobach’s testimony disclosed along with other documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union in our challenge to his restrictive voter registration regime. The unsealed materials confirm what many have suspected: Kobach has a ready-made plan to gut core voting rights protections enshrined in federal law. And he has been covertly lobbying Trump’s team and other officials from day one to sell them the falsehood that noncitizens are swinging elections. As the de facto head of President Trump’s election commission, Kobach has positioned himself to lead an all-out assault on the right to vote.”

Center For American Progress Makes a Failed Case for Charters. Jeff Bryant:“Trump swept into office on a platform that included support for charter schools and other alternatives to public schools… So it’s surprising to see the Center for American Progress, originators of the #Resist campaign, issue a “Progressive Case for Charter Schools” that decries the ‘waning’ support for charters among Democrats and scolds charter school skeptics for being against progressive institutions. But CAP’s argument for charters is flawed and unconvincing in multiple ways.”
