Nick Thomas

The following article appeared in the Brockton Enterprise on February 2, 2009:

.
Middleboro man injured in fall from scaffolding
.
MIDDLEBORO —
A Middleboro man with serious head injuries was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital after he fell from scaffolding on Sunday afternoon.
.
Lt. David M. Mackiewicz said the man was shingling a Pleasant Street home with his uncle when he fell about 20 feet.
.
Fire Cpt. James W. Wiksten said the men were in the process of raising the scaffolding when it snapped, leaving the uncle stranded at the top with his nephew unconscious on the ground.
.
Wiksten said it took 10 minutes to get from the Central Fire Station to Pleasant Street because North Station was closed.
.
Wiksten said the man was transported by helicopter to a Boston hospital to be treated for head injuries were suspected. The helicopter landed in a parking lot in the north Middleboro industrial park, Mackiewicz said.
.
Mackiewicz said the man is a father of two girls and a Middleboro native, but withheld his name pending notification of the family.
.
There was no subsequent article revealing that the injured man was Nicholas J. Thomas, known to most as Nick.
.
Nick passed away earlier today.
.
The arrangements are as follows:
The Wake will be at Ashley's Thurs 4-8 and the funeral mass at Sacred Heart on Friday at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at the Mitchell Club.
.
Nick was attending nursing school to plan for his future and provide a better life for his family. He called me several times the night before papers were due for information. I can only hope I helped him as he helped others.
.
There were many lives touched by Nick, who was always upbeat and smiling, juggling responsibilities.
.
Nick will be sorely missed.
.

Our family has known Nick since his childhood. He was our neighbor and a friend and playmate to our older son.

Even as a child, Nick was full of compassion for others and brought joy to those who knew him. I will always be grateful to this young man for his unconditional acceptance of our younger profoundly disabled son and Nick's ability to interact so naturally with him and make him laugh. Nick didn't hold himself back the way many others did. It was just so natural for him to respond lovingly.

Throughout his short lifetime Nick had to overcome many obstacles and tough breaks. Instead of dwelling on the way things should have been, Nick played the cards life dealt him with optimism, courage, and determination. A meticulous and accomplished carpenter, Nick always put forth his best effort. He could be counted on to go that extra mile.

Recently Nick completed his first semester in nursing school and worked hard to accomplish grades that earned him a place on the Dean's List. This was an unselfish effort on his part as his aim was to build a better life for his two young daughters who he loved with all his big heart. That expansive love is the greatest legacy Nick leaves behind.

Nick was only 30 years old when he died so tragically today. But even though his was a short life, he will be remembered and missed by all those who were touched by his good humor, kindness, and spontaneous smile.

Not long ago, two MHS students died suddenly in a car crash one morning on their way to school. Nick's immediate response was to set up a fund for the families left behind, never seeking any attention for himself. Who could have ever imagined that a few short weeks later this caring young man would also be struck down.

Godspeed, dear Nick. Those of us who knew you will always carry your memory in our hearts.

Nick played defense on my soccer team. I remember him as a kid who was willing to do whatever the team needed with enthusiasm and enjoyment of the sport. Always good natured and cooperative, he put forth his best effort.

Nick also loved nature and enjoyed making sketches of birds and wildlife. He was blessed with gifted hands which he put to good use with his wood working projects.

Nick, you will be missed by many.

There was always a twinkling in his eyes that was most apparent when speaking of his girls or when he had them with him.

Nick had so much left to do.

He exuded a likability I haven't seen elsewhere.

I didn't know Nick, but I've read what others have said about him, and can't help but remember others from Middleboro who were taken from us too soon. Nick seemed like an ordinary, yet extraordinary man who will live long in the hearts of those who knew him, and resonate in those who didn't. God bless, Nick.

Although we met only a few short months ago, Nicholas became a close friend of mine and someone whom I care about deeply.
I look back and I think of how he really did have such a tremendous impact on me. He always had something nice to say to brighten up my day, and he always put a smile on my face.
He put a smile on everyones face.
Nicholas always seemed to have such a positive outlook on things which is what I admired most about him.
And the way he smiled and spoke with such joy when he talked about Lilly and Isabella. All his hard work and his education was only to better their lives and be the amazing father that he was.
He did everything in his power to help someone when they needed it never looking for anything in return.
I just want to thank him for everything he has done for me and helped me with.
Nicholas James, You will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. And all of the people whose lives you have graced with your beautiful presence.

"May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand."

-Marilyn (classmate and friend)

I hope that the community will rally to offer their help and support to Nick's girls. Such a tragic loss.

To Nick's family and friends,
I did not know Nick very well but we were in Biology class together this semester, we were lab partners with two other people. I am so SORRY for your loss!!! I hope you can find the comfort that he is in heaven. He was too young and had so much to live for. He was a great lab partner and I enjoyed getting to know him in the very short time I knew him. He talked about his girls and his love for carpentry all the time. He will be missed by all of us. Kim

I, also, didn't know Nick very long, but he was truly special. His beautiful daughters will need a great deal of support and I hope to be there.
When the shock subsides, I hope the family will reach out and network. I'm more than willing to be there for them and fill in some of the gaps.

I have not seen Nick since we graduated high school. What I do remember of him was a kind, friendly, likeable person who always had a smile and enjoyed making people laugh.
Although I am very sad to learn of his untimely death, it is nice to read comments posted by those who were close to him that he lived his life full of love for others, especially his children, and that he made such a positive impact on those around him. We should all live our lives in this way.
May God bless Nick, his family and friends.

When I would go to the YMCA, Nick was usually leaving with Lily in his arms, holding Isabella by the hand. A big smile and warm hello always made you glad you knew him.

I knew Nick for quite some time, and through the years he became one of the closest friends I have ever had. He was kind, hard working, generous and loved Isabella and Lily with all of his heart. There aren't enough words that could come close to describing the type of man or father he was. If you knew Nick as well as I did, you would know how much he went through and how hard he worked to make a better life for his two beautiful girls; and how he could never catch a break. Despite everything Nick kept his undying faith and never gave up. I know now that Nick is looking down on his faith community, the community of middleboro, and his friends; all of whom he relied on and had faith in to help give support to his girls and thair amazing Uncle Bob and Aunt Suzie.

There is a benefit on March 28 at the Elks Lodge in Middleboro. Tickets are $25 for a pair or $15 indivdual. Donations are also greatly appreciated!!! Please, come help support the amazing girls that Nick loved so much.

Katrina M.,

We didn't know Nick nearly long enough.

His broad smile and that twinkle in his eyes you immediately loved.

In the photo that was used for his Mass, his smile illuminated his face. He's the only one I have ever met whose face was creased with smile lines at 30!

Nick frequently expressed a wisdom and maturity beyond his years.

I posted the information you provided on the right of my blog. Any additional information you can provide will be added.

Nick had such a great generosity of spirit, I'm sure this will be widely supported.
