Obama breaks 2008 campaign pledge on net
neutrality --This is
what one might call a net-discrimination rule, and, if enacted, it will
profoundly change the Internet as a platform for free speech and small-scale
innovation. 24 Apr 2014 In 2007, at a public forum at Coe College, in
Iowa, Presidential candidate Barack Obama was asked about net neutrality.
Specifically, "Would you make it a priority in your first year of office to
reinstate net neutrality as the law of the land? And would you pledge to only
appoint F.C.C. commissioners that support open Internet principles like net
neutrality?" "The answer is yes," Obama replied. "I am a strong supporter of net
neutrality." If reports in the Wall Street Journal are correct, Obama's chairman
of the Federal Communications Commission, Thomas Wheeler, has proposed a new
rule that is an explicit and blatant violation of this
promise.
'Net Neutrality' Overturned by FCC in Cave-in to Cable
Lobbyists --One top
cable executive said, 'I have to say, I'm pleased.' 23 Apr 2014
Regulators are proposing new rules on Internet traffic that would allow
broadband providers to charge companies [and, in turn, consumers] a premium for
access to their fastest lanes [and slow delivery of items such as the CLG
Newsletter]. The Federal Communications Commission plans to put forth its new rules on Thursday. The proposal marks the FCC's third attempt at enforcing
"net neutrality"--the concept that all Internet traffic should be treated
equally. Net neutrality was a key part of
President Barack Obama's campaign platform in 2008.
Obama official responsible for copyright chapters of TPP and
ACTA gets job at MPAA; his replacement is another copyright
lobbyist --When Obama
was campaigning for office, he vowed that 'lobbyists won't work in my White
House.' 23 Apr 2014 Stan McCoy is the assistant US Trade Representative
who oversaw the creation of the disastrous, far-reaching copyright provisions in
ACTA and the Trans Pacific Partnership. He's left the Obama administration for a
high-paid job at the MPAA, which represents companies that stood to reap massive
profits and permanent control over Internet governance and innovation thanks to
his efforts while in government. Now, the Obama administration has headhunted a
software industry lobbyist (who supported SOPA) to take over his job. McCoy is
one of more than a dozen USTR officials who've left the government to work for
copyright lobbying bodies...
F.B.I. Informant Is Tied to Cyberattacks
Abroad --Attacks were
coordinated by snitch Hector Xavier Monsegur, aka Sabu 24 Apr 2014 An
informant working for the F.B.I. coordinated a 2012 campaign of hundreds of
cyberattacks on foreign websites, including some operated by the governments of
Iran, Syria, Brazil and Pakistan, according to documents and interviews with
people involved in the attacks. Exploiting a vulnerability in a popular web
hosting software, the informant directed at least one hacker to extract vast
amounts of data from the government servers of a number of countries and upload
it to a server monitored by the F.B.I., according to court statements. The
details of the 2012 episode have, until now, been kept largely a secret in
closed sessions of a federal court in New York and heavily redacted
documents.
Govt must turn over info on CIA prisons to
defense 22 Apr 2014 Prosecutors must
turn over never-revealed details about the time a Guantanamo Bay detainee spent
in secret CIA prisons after his arrest in connection with the deadly attack on
the USS Cole in Yemen, according to a military judge's order released Tuesday.
The five-page order was a victory for defense lawyers representing Abd al Rahim
al-Nashiri, accused of orchestrating the Oct. 12, 2000, bombing of the USS Cole.
Prosecutors, who can appeal the judge's ruling, had argued that information
about his time spent [being tortured] CIA custody was irrelevant to the
case.
US Navy to deploy combat dolphins for Black Sea military
drills - report 22 Apr 2014 American
combat dolphins and sea lions will undergo a lengthy plane flight in order to
participate in NATO war games in the Black Sea, a spokesman for the US Navy's
marine mammals program reportedly said. Twenty dolphins and ten sea lions will
take part in the drills, which will last between one and two weeks, spokesman
Tom LaPuzza said, as cited by Izvestia newspaper. The war games are one of eight
joint NATO-Ukrainian military exercises scheduled to take place this year.

can rid us of this miserable regime?]
US troops arrive in Poland for
drills amid rising tensions over Ukraine 24 Apr 2014 The first wave of US troops has arrived in Poland to
begin military drills "promoting peace and stability" [?!?] across Eastern
Europe. Tensions continue to mount in the region, as Ukraine teeters on the
brink of a civil war. A contingent of 150 American soldiers arrived in the
Polish town of Swidwin on Thursday and will be shortly joined by another 450
troops...Defense Department spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby, who announced the
drills Tuesday, said they sent a clear message to Moscow.
U.S. says will act 'in days' if no Russian action in
Ukraine 21 Apr 2014 The United
States government said on Monday it will decide "in days" on additional
sanctions if Russia does not take steps to implement an agreement to ease
tensions in Ukraine reached in Geneva last week. The steps include publicly
calling on pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine to vacate occupied
buildings and checkpoints, accept an amnesty and address their grievances
politically, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
US responsible for Ukrainian crisis after investing $5bn in
regime change - Russia's envoy to UN
23 Apr 2014 The US is to blame for the events in Ukraine as it invested 5
billion in regime change in the country, taking a more radical stance that its
EU allies, Vitaly Churkin, Russia's envoy to the UN, said. "It seems it was the
Americans, who tried to push through the most radical scenario," Churkin said in
an interview with Rossiya 24 channel. "They didn't want any sort of compromise
between [ousted President Viktor] Yanukovich and the opposition. And, I think,
they came to the conclusion that it was time to cash in those 5 billion and
handle the matter towards abrupt regime change, which, eventually, happened."
This explains why the US, but not the European Union, took center stage when the
coup resulted in legal vacuum in Kiev, he added.

assailant was a member of the Afghan Public Protection Force assigned to guard
the hospital.

the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the
Israeli-occupied West Bank, Reuters reports.

change 23 Apr 2014 Former U.S.
soldier Bradley Manning, who is serving 35 years in prison for turning over
classified files to WikiLeaks, can exchange the name Bradley for Chelsea to
reflect her desire to be treated as a woman, a judge in Kansas ruled on
Wednesday. Manning's name is legally changed to Chelsea Elizabeth Manning,

King. Manning will be issued a new birth certificate to reflect the name
change.

NRC extends post-Fukushima fix deadline for Limerick nuclear
plant 23 Apr 2014 (PA) The Exelon
nuclear plant has been given two more years to make a crucial upgrade to the
reactor buildings intended to prevent explosions like those that occurred during
the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. In March 2012, the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission ordered the Limerick Generating Station to take a number of steps
designed to prevent the building-up of explosive gas in the reactor containment
building...On Feb. 26, Exelon wrote to the NRC and asked for a two-year
extension on the deadlines for installing the new safeguards in each of its two
reactors. On April 14, the NRC informed Exelon that its request for an extension
had been granted.
Georgia's sweeping new gun law allows guns in bars,
churches 23 Apr 2014 In Georgia, it
will soon be legal to carry a gun in more places -- including bars, churches and
government buildings -- following Gov. Nathan Deal's (R) signing Wednesday of a
bill celebrated by supporters as a victory for the 2nd Amendment but decried by
critics as the "guns-everywhere bill." The Safe Carry Protection Act, which
takes effect July 1, will allow licensed gun owners to take firearms into houses
of worship if the congregation allows it, into bars unless the owner objects,
into non-secure areas of airports, and into government buildings, except past
security checkpoints.
NYPD's Twitter Request for Photos
Backfires 23 Apr 2014 A request by
the New York City Police Department has backfired -- in a very public way. Its
request that Twitter users share pictures of them posing with police officers
has caused people to start sending in photos of police brutality...Other photos
included an elderly man bloodied after being arrested for
jaywalking.
Fear of Christie's ties to U.S. Attorney kept Hoboken mayor
from reporting alleged Sandy Aid threats - letter 22 Apr 2014 Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer has often been
questioned as to why she didn't come forward last year when threats she says
were made by the Lt. Governor over her Sandy Aid occurred. This week, Zimmer
attempted to explain her reasoning in a letter to the Democratic leaders of the
legislature. In what she says are previously unreported entries to her personal
journal, Zimmer says she discussed coming forward with the city's redevelopment
attorney, but ultimately decided it was pointless.
Grazing Welfare Recipient Cliven Bundy Is a
Grammatically-Challenged Racist: A Defiant Rancher
Savors the Audience That Rallied to His Side 24 Apr 2014 For 55 minutes, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy held forth
to a clutch of supporters about his views on the troubled state of America --
the overreaching federal government, the harassment of Western ranchers, the
societal upheaval caused by abortion, even musing about whether slavery was so
bad... "I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro," he said. Mr.
Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, "and in
front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people
and the kids -- and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on
the porch -- they didn't have nothing to do. They didn't have nothing for their
kids to do...They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail,
because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I've often wondered, are they
better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things,
or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn't get no more
freedom. They got less freedom."
