Fukushima No. 1 boss
admits radioactive water problems out of control --Abe [lied and] told an Olympic Committee meet
situation was under control 20 Apr 2014 The manager of the Fukushima
No. 1 nuclear power plant admits to embarrassment that repeated efforts have
failed to bring under control the problem of radioactive water, eight months
after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the world the matter had been resolved.
Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's operator, has been fighting a daily battle
against contaminated
radioactive water since Fukushima was wrecked in March 2011. "It's embarrassing
to admit, but there are certain parts of the site where we don't have full
control," Akira Ono told reporters touring the plant last
week.
1.1 Tons of
Radioactive Water Overflows Waste Container at Fukushima
Plant 16 Apr 2014 Around 1.1
tons of radioactive water overflowed Wednesday from a container during cleansing
of a water treatment system at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, plant operator
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said. The water did not leak outside due to a barrier
and remained inside the building housing the so-called Advanced Liquid
Processing System, a facility that has been in trial operation since March last
year. The water contained around 3.8 million becquerels per liter of beta
radiation emitting radioactive materials such as strontium-90.
Scathing documents
detailing $600 billion squandered in Afghanistan 15 Apr 2014 (Files compiled by The Washington

Confidential U.S.
assessments show Afghanistan not ready to govern on
own --State Department tries to hide risks of
corruption 15 Apr 2014 Confidential U.S. assessments, which the
State Department tried to hide from the public, show nearly all Afghan Cabinet
ministries are woefully ill-prepared to govern after the U.S. withdraws its
troops, often describing the gaps in knowledge, capability and safeguards as
"critical" and describing an infrastructure in danger of collapsing if left to
its own accord. The State Department USAID reports, obtained by The Washington
Times, paint a sobering portrait about the impact of the billions of dollars the
U.S. has spent on nation-buildingdestroying over the past
decade.

'Easter truce' broken: Five deaths reported in overnight
checkpoint raid in E. Ukraine
20 Apr 2014 Five people have been killed in a gunfight in Slavyansk, a city in
eastern Ukraine held by anti-government protesters. The fatalities include three
protesters and two attackers, who are believed to be from the Right Sector
paramilitary. The deaths came after a night attack on a protester checkpoint on
the outskirts of the city. Four cars drove by the checkpoint and opened fire at
the local residents manning it, killing two people and seriously injuring
several others.
Pentagon-sponsored
study opens door for super lasers, weather
control 19 Apr 2014
Pentagon-sponsored researchers have made the reach of an intensive laser beam
longer by an order of magnitude. Researchers say their discovery can be used to
seed rain and trigger lightning, but the potential scope of applications
is much larger. A short intensive laser pulse produces plasma in its
path. This plasma can interact with charged particles in a storm cloud and
change weather, starting rain on request and control lightning
bolts.
DARPA producing
sea-floor pods that can release attack drones on
command 19 Apr 2014 The
Pentagon's research arm, DARPA, is developing robot pods that can sit at the
bottom of the ocean for long stretches of time, waiting to release airborne and
water-based drones to the surface upon an attack command. The Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently called for bids to complete the final
two phases of its Upward Falling Payloads (UFP) program. The UFPs would come equipped with electronic and low-power
laser attack capabilities, surveillance sensors, and airborne and aquatic drones
that would have the ability to act as decoys or offer intelligence and targeting
data, Ars Technica reported.
Inside 'The Bunker'
Security Command for Boston Marathon
20 Apr 2014 Every year the Boston Marathon attracts thousands of spectators, but
this year thousands more eyes - some digital and some undercover - will be
watching intently as well, looking for anything that might warn them of a repeat
of last year's tragedy. Authorities in charge of security for the marathon
Monday are taking no chances, with an unprecedented security apparatus that
includes some 4,000 deployed police officers, including 500 plainclothes
officers, more than 100 surveillance cameras and a underground, futuristic
coordination center boasting some 260 security officials representing more than
60 local, state and federal agencies.

waste dump --The
deeper crews went into the area, the more widespread the radiation 17
Apr 2014 Two months after radiation leaked from the federal government's
half-mile deep nuclear waste dump in southeastern New Mexico, officials said
Thursday that crews have found contamination radiation underground
in the area where [radioactive] waste was most recently being stored. Tammy

community meeting in Carlsbad that more trips need to be made into the Waste
Isolation Pilot Plant to further investigate the accident.

Obama seeks boost for disastrous TPP treaty in Asia-Pacific
trip 19 Apr 2014
President Obama is heading to the Asia-Pacific next week to try and build
support for a massive [job-, Internet-, and environmental-killing;
anti-democratic] trade 'deal' that is central to his economic agenda and
America's strategic pivot toward the region. The White House is intensifying
efforts to wrap up the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which would expand trade
from the Pacific Rim to Latin America, but is struggling to break a stalemate
with Japan over market access. The pact is also facing staunch opposition from
congressional Democrats.
Civilian Militia Remains at Bundy Ranch After Standoff
Ends 19 Apr 2014 A group of armed
militia and protesters, some sporting nametags reading "domestic terrorist,"
remain camped out on a cattle ranch in Nevada, where they have been purportedly
defending the property since a tense showdown ended with the federal government
last week. A 20-year struggle between rancher Cliven Bundy and the Bureau of
Land Management over decades of alleged illegal cattle grazing on public land
ended last Sunday, with the government backing down from a controversial
week-long cattle round-up.
