US sends 600 troops to Eastern Europe, warship USS Taylor
enters Black Sea 22 Apr 2014 US
frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50) has entered the Black Sea, according to the US Navy,
as the Pentagon announces plans to dispatch some 600 troops to Poland,
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for military exercises. Russian Foreign Minister
Sergey Lavrov has previously stated that the US has been violating the
Montreux Convention which restricts the number of US vessels operating
in the Black Sea and sets a time limit of 21 days for each one...The 600 troops
are to be sent to Poland and the Baltic states in the coming days in order to
offer support to NATO allies which have expressed concern following Crimea’s
accession to Russia, the Pentagon stated on Tuesday.
U.S. offers Ukraine $50 million aid
package 22 Apr 2014 The United
States has offered Ukraine a new 50 million aid package to help with 'economic
and political reform,' the White House said on Tuesday during a visit to Kiev by
Vice President Joe Biden. It also offered an additional 8 million in non-lethal
military aid, including radios and vehicles, according to a statement issued by
Biden's staff in Kiev. Small in terms of Ukraine's needs and in relation to the
1 billion loan guarantee already signed with Washington, the package, along with
Biden's visit, was a clear show of support for the new authorities following the
[CIA-backed] overthrow of the Kremlin-backed president and continuing
confrontation with Russia. [There's $58 million to give the unelected
Nazi government in the Ukraine--but there's no money for food stamps or to
extend unemployment insurance, though, right? And these potholes on the
Interstates are beginning to rival the Mariana Trench in their depths--they
should check to see if Flight MH370 is in one of them--but Congress
won't appropriate one cent for their repairs. Too bad we can't get Cliven Bundy's militias to show up to fight
*this* insanity. --LRP]
Guantánamo Bay detainees' release upon end of Afghanistan war
'unlikely' 19 Apr 2014 Typically,
when a war ends, so does the combatants' authority to detain the other side's
fighters. But as the conclusion of the US war in Afghanistan approaches, the
inmate population of Guantánamo Bay is likely to be an exception -- and, for the
Obama administration, the latest complication to its attempt to close the infamous
wartime detention complex. In December, when President Barack Obama and his Nato
allies formally end their combat role in Afghanistan, US officials indicate
there is unlikely to be a corresponding release of detainees at Guantánamo who
were captured during the country's longest conflict. Already human rights groups
and lawyers for the detainees say they anticipate filing a new wave of lawsuits
challenging the basis for a wartime detention after the war ends -- the next
phase in more than a decade of attempts to litigate the end of
indefinite detention.
NY court: US must release targeted killings
memo 21 Apr 2014 The U.S. government
must publicly disclose in redacted form secret papers describing its legal
justification for using drones to kill citizens suspected of terrorism overseas,
because President Barack Obama and senior government officials have commented on
the subject, a federal appeals court ruled Monday. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals in New York ruled in a Freedom of Information Act case brought by the
American Civil Liberties Union and two reporters for The New York Times. In
2011, they sought any documents in which Department of Justice lawyers had
discussed the highly classified "targeted-killing" program.
US unleashes three days of drone strikes on Yemen, 55
killed 21 Apr 2014 Dozens are
reportedly dead in Yemen, including at least three civilians, as the result of a
series of drone strikes that started in the southern part of the country on
Saturday and is alleged to still be occurring two days later. By noontime in
Washington, DC on Monday, the Associated Press reported that 55 Al-Qaeda
[al-CIAduh] militants were among those that had been killed in an hours-long
series of strikes that targeted a training camp operated by the group, according
to Yemen's interior ministry. The United States is alleged to have
carried out the strikes using unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, but does not
legally have to acknowledge any operations conducted by its Central Intelligence
Agency and has not commented.
US drone strikes kill about 50 in south
Yemen 21 Apr 2014 The death toll
from three days of air strikes carried out by US drones in southern Yemen has
reached almost 50, reports say. On Monday, at least three people were killed
after a US drone fired a missile at a vehicle carrying three men in the
country's southern province of Shabwa. According to witnesses, the vehicle was
completely destroyed and the burnt remains of the bodies could be
seen.
U.S. force in Afghanistan may be cut to less than 10,000
troops [Yeah, that
should be enough to protect the CIA's op-um routes.] 21 Apr 2014 The
number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan may drop well below 10,000 - the minimum
demanded by the U.S. military to 'train Afghan forces' - as the longest war in
American history winds down, Obama administration officials briefed on the
matter say. Since Afghanistan's general election on April 5, White House, State
Department and Pentagon officials have resumed discussions on how many American
troops should remain after the current U.S.-led coalition ends its mission this
year.
False flag casting call: Marines looking for a few good actors
to play terrorists in training exercises --25 actors -- all of whom must be U.S. citizens and be able
to adapt to multiple scenarios -- are being sought for the exercises, which will
also feature the use of AK-47s with blank ammunition provided by BKM
Enterprises. 21 Apr 2014 The United States Marine Corps is looking for
a few good actors to play terrorists in upcoming training exercises, putting out
a casting call that could give clues about for what the Pentagon is prepping. A
solicitation put out this month by the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special
Operations Command sought an actor to play an "Al Qaeda personality," a
French-speaker with a college degree in
chemistry and three men who could play "high value insurgent"
roles. The actors are needed for training exercises in South Carolina during the
next three months. [Pretty blatant about it, aren't they? Let's hope the
dirt-bags don't *go live,* as they did on 9/11, in Boston, and
elsewhere.]
Why Is the Post
Office Buying Bullets? 21 Apr 2014
The U.S. Postal Service has become the target of gun enthusiasts, who are
accusing the agency of stockpiling ammunition as part of a broader government
plot to deprive Americans of their liberties. On April 14, Newsmax reported that
the USPS was seeking to buy a large amount
of ammunition on the heels of similar
purchases by the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If this
sounds vaguely familiar, it might be because last February, the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security posted a solicitation to federal suppliers for a potential
p-rchase of 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition.
Police respond to shooting near National
Zoo 21 Apr 2014 Two men were shot
Monday afternoon in the midst of a knot of people on Connecticut Avenue NW near
the National Zoo, site of an annual Easter event that drew thousands of people
over the course of the day. Neither man was thought to be seriously wounded. No
motive was known in the shootings, D.C. police said.
The Scary Truth About the New York City Flu Vaccine
Mandate 21 Apr 2014 This year,
150,000 children will be added to the list of victims of forced vaccination. The
leaders of New York City have mandated that all children under the age of six
years old who attend day care or preschool must be vaccinated with the flu
vaccine... According to the CDC, the flu vaccine contains thimerosal,
aluminum, antibiotics, egg protein, aborted human
fetal cells, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Our immune systems
may be unable to combat these foreign, toxic substances... According to a search
of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) website, in the past five
years, (during the period from January 2009 until February 2014) there were
55, 578 adverse events reported to VAERS
related to the flu vaccine.
US Supreme Court upholds Michigan law that bans affirmative
action 22 Apr 2014 The US Supreme
Court has upheld Michigan's ban on using race as a factor in college admissions.
The justices [sic] said in a 6-2 ruling on Tuesday that Michigan voters had the
right to change their state constitution to prohibit public colleges and
universities from taking account of race in admissions decisions. The justices
say that a lower federal court was wrong to set aside the change as
discriminatory.
U.S. Supreme Court upholds anti-affirmative action law,
California's Prop. 209 stands 22 Apr
2014 In a decision that likely makes California's Proposition 209 bulletproof
against legal attack, the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld an identical
Michigan law that bans affirmative action in public programs such as university
admissions. The Supreme Court, while splintered in its legal reasoning,
determined that voters had a right to enact Michigan's law in 2006 and make a
choice to outlaw race and gender preferences. The majority decision, written by
Justice Anthony Kennedy, based the outcome on a states' rights argument,
steering clear of whether Michigan's law violated the constitutional rights of
minorities in the state.
Law firm hired by Christie for internal probe donated $10K in
2014 to RGA 15 Apr 2014 Nine days
before a team of its top lawyers made public a report clearing Governor Christie
in the George Washington Bridge scandal, the law firm donated 10,000 to the
Republican Governors Association, a group he heads. Gibson Dunn & Crutcher
made its donation March 18. The law firm's California office appears to make
regular contributions to the GOP group, which Christie has credited with helping
him get elected in 2009.
Earth Day and the Arctic, Where Global Warming Is Up Close and
Personal 21 Apr 2014 As the world
celebrates Earth Day, the top of the world [the Arctic Circle] offers a unique
window on the sometimes unforeseen consequences of global warming, in which
familiar meteorological patterns no longer apply. In the Arctic, which due to
its sensitivity to temperature is on the front lines of climate change, the
result is an unfamiliar cycle of thawing and freezing that would have been
unthinkable a decade ago, and which is affecting life in large and small
ways...Making matters worse, polar bears stalk beaches where
they have never been seen before, and are soon expected to begin hunting
reindeer, and warm-climate brown bears are moving farther north into reindeer
territory to cool off.
Heartwarming love in the freezing cold: A polar bear mother
cuddles up with her cub 21 Apr 2014
A mother's true love for her child has been captured in this set of photographs
taken of a polar bear and her cub. The proud mum showed off her baby at
Novosibirsk Zoo in Russia by showering it with affection and cuddles. After some
time, the pair were worn out and the youngster fell asleep in her mother's
arms.
