The candidate, an incumbent, explained that, in Massachusetts, the inmates are there for lesser crimes, for shorter periods. MOST were illiterate and he was working hard to teach them to read, as well as job training skills.
Somewhere along the line, we lost sight of the purpose of prisons.
Somewhere along the line, just as with Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, we've lost sight of our humanity.
If we, as a nation, think that barbarity and abuse will reduce recidivism, we are morally bankrupt.
Please pay attention to the failures in our prison system. We're breeding more anger and crime without solving the problem.
Many of these adult criminals are troubled kids who were ignored or discarded.
