Feds appoint new senior resident inspector to Pilgrim Nuclear Plant
Erin Carfang will join Resident Inspector Brian Scrabeck in Plymouth
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Tuesday announced the assignment of Erin Carfang as the new senior resident inspector at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth.
Most recently, Carfang was a resident inspector at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Plant in Shippingport, PA, according to an NRC release. She joined NRC's Region One in 2009. Before working for the NRC, Carfang was a naval officer aboard the USS The Sullivans and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. She holds a degree in chemical engineering from Tulane University, according to the NRC.
Commercial nuclear power plants in the United States have a minimum of two NRC resident inspectors. Carfang will be joining NRC Resident Inspector Brian Scrabeck at the Entergy-owned facility in Plymouth. Scrabeck replaced Resident Inspector Brian P. Smith in December 2013.
Carfang will replace Senior Resident Inspector Max Schneider who has been assigned to the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant in Nebraska.
Resident inspectors, according to NRC, are the agency's "eyes and ears". Resident inspectors can serve at a facility for up to seven years, according to NRC. They are highly-trained and oversee all plant function's on a daily basis. The resident inspector program was started in 1978.
