1. We just hit the highest-ever level of CO2 in the atmosphere globally – for a whole month straight.
This spring, CO2 in the atmosphere reached 400 parts per million at measuring sites around the world – a high-water mark for the amount of contaminants in the atmosphere. And that amount of CO2 is 50ppm worse than what most scientists consider a safe level to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
2. California’s drought has killed more than 12 million trees in just the past few years.
High temperatures, low snowpack, and lack of rainfall have killed millions of trees in California. The state’s national forests are now filled with 999,000 acres of dead trees. With forest fire season around the corner, all that dry wood puts the region at great risk of wildfire. In some areas, the number of tree deaths has almost doubled just since last July.
Forest fires are a natural part of the California ecosystem, but the current rate is almost double the historical rate. All those fires just put more black carbon into the atmosphere, and undermine the ability of our forests to absorb carbon dioxide.
3. Doctors say their patients’ health is already being harmed by climate change.
The National Medical Association found that almost nine in 10 of its members said climate change impacted their patient care. Doctors are already seeing more respiratory problems and heat-related illness. And if climate change continues, this will be only the beginning.
4. Climate change may be contributing to earthquakes like the one in Nepal.
Heavy monsoon seasons and rising sea levels will put pressure on tectonic plates – leading to more frequent earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Scientists believe that even small increases in sea level will increase volcanic eruptions.
5. The sea level is rising faster than we thought.
New satellite data shows that the rate of sea level rising has accelerated since 1993 as ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica have melted. The study warns that sea level rise puts coastal cities like New York, Tampa, and New Orleans at risk as “once-in-a-lifetime” floods become more frequent.

I’m from Rhode Island, the Ocean State, so urging Congress to take action on climate change is something I’m deeply committed to. The science is irrefutable. Climate change is a real and present threat to our country. Our action is needed now more than ever.
