Mishap on the rails causes overnight evacuation
ADDIS - A handful of families forced from their homes will either stay with friends and relatives or a hotel provided by the railroad following an evacuation order issued Tuesday night when rail cars jumped the tracks and overturned.
The overnight evacuation was ordered at 7 p.m. for people living in the area around the Acadian Crossing and Sunset Place subdivisions. The order was for people living 1000 feet on either side of the track. People living outside that area will shelter in place until the order is lifted, possibly until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Six tanker cars went off the tracks at an interchange on Peter Messina Road in Addis around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. Four of those cars fell onto their sides. Three of those four contain hazardous material but a State Police spokesperson said none of the cars leaked. The Department of Environmental Quality is monitoring the air.
