Let Me Address the Absolutely Pathetic Republican Response to the Planned Parenthood Attack December 2, 2015 By Allen Clifton
At this point it’s becoming nearly impossible to deny that the Republican party has turned into a giant cult. Truth, reality, facts… none of those seem to matter anymore.
Look at this Donald Trump 9/11 nonsense.
Despite the fact that there’s literally not a single shred of evidence to support his claim that “thousands and thousands” of people were celebrating in the streets of New Jersey, he still claims that it’s true with members of his campaign even suggesting that there’s a giant media conspiracy to conceal the evidence of these celebrations.
What’s worse is that members of the conservative media who know Trump is lying are now starting to say that they remember these celebrations – even though the networks for which they work, such as Fox News, can’t produce a single video clip to support these claims. And don’t even try to tell me that if Fox News had learned Muslims were celebrating in the streets of New Jersey on 9/11, that they wouldn’t have been all over that.
The bottom line is, Trump is lying – end of story. Sadly, the response by many Republicans following the tragic attack on Planned Parenthood that left three dead in Colorado Springs might be even more ridiculous than Trump’s 9/11 lies. I get it, Republicans sure as heck don’t want to admit that their rhetoric inspired a madman to murder three people. But there’s no denying that the GOP bears a lot of responsibility for this.
Someone doesn’t open fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic, later commenting to authorities about “no more baby parts,” without having been influenced by the lies about Planned Parenthood “selling baby parts for profit” that the Republican party has been pushing over the last several months. It’s like a few months ago when some people opened fire on military personnel during the Jade Helm conspiracy nonsense. Another absolutely ridiculous conspiracy about the Obama administration confiscating guns (there were people literally burying guns here in Texas) that was legitimized by Republican rhetoric, fear-mongering and pandering to crazy people.
Thought when it comes to this attack on Planned Parenthood and the murder of three people, for Republicans to deny their rhetoric had anything to do with it is an absolute joke. Is Robert Lewis Dear insane? Very likely. Does he represent the vast majority of people who oppose abortion? No, he doesn’t. But words do matter.
Republicans have built a party platform mostly on fear, anger, hate and hostility. They hate/fear/harbor anger/are hostile toward: Women Muslims Immigrants Homosexuals People who want to keep religion out of government Red coffee cups The poor Pretty much every minority group The government The list goes on and on.
To watch these GOP presidential debates, 90 percent of these spectacles are nothing more than Republican candidates bashing Democrats. Even when they talk about what they support (which is rare) it’s usually built upon rhetoric that typically goes something like, “The Obama administration has failed, which is why my plan (insert vague talking points) will save America from the policies that this president has put in place that have set the United States on a path of destruction.”
It is an indoctrination of hopelessness, anger, paranoia and hostility that has created such a toxic political environment in this country, the GOP presidential race has essentially become a contest to see who can most effectively pander to ignorance. But the issue here is, a party cannot drive itself fueled on this radical rhetoric and not expect it to eventually manifest itself violently.
And I’m not talking about the truth ticking someone off. If you’re being honest and that motivates someone to act out violently, then there’s no “fault” to be put on anyone but the person who acted out. But if you’re blatantly pushing lies, like Republicans have been about Planned Parenthood, then you are absolutely responsible if they lead to people acting out violently who think violence is justified based upon the misinformation you’ve been pushing.
However, the truth is, the level of absurdity we’ve seen from Republicans following the Planned Parenthood shooting is actually them admitting that their rhetoric is partially to blame. Not only did most of the presidential candidates stay absolutely silent for over 24 hours after the attack – which is ridiculous in and of itself – but I’ve often found that the more ludicrous the response someone has, the more truth that person is trying to cover up.
But watching Republicans scramble to try to deflect blame from their party following the Planned Parenthood attack has been a disgrace. It’s laughable that there are millions of people who actually take these clowns seriously.
