Bernie Sanders Gets Booed When He Asks Delegates to Elect Hillary Clinton | 25 July 2016 | The crowd of delegates in the convention center ballroom didn't come for unity: They came for Bernie Sanders. Sanders, the Vermont senator whose bid to beat back Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination fell short, took the stage this afternoon to speak to his delegates before he'll take a bigger stage in a few hours-at the Democratic National Convention on its opening night, in a bid to promote unity in the party as it gears up to face Republican Donald Trump in the fall...When Sanders finally got around to speaking about the woman who will actually be the Democratic nominee, the crowd soured on their hero.

Even as he spoke, the reaction was mixed and emotions ran high.

9/11 defense lawyers: Judge let U.S. secretly destroy CIA 'black site' evidence | 24 July 2016 | Defense lawyers for the alleged 9/11 plotters said for the first time Sunday that the government destroyed a secret CIA prison with secret permission of the trial judge, and they learned of it only after the fact. Defense attorneys have been complaining about a mysterious destruction of evidence episode in a cloaked manner since May...Defense lawyers also for the first time solved a mystery that had surrounded the Pentagon's two death-penalty prosecutions that seek to execute six former CIA prisoners: Two sets of top secret filings - known to the public as "the no-name motions" - sought permission to destroy the black site whose location was so secret the defense attorneys couldn't even know it. They've been under seal for years, as AE92 in the USS Cole case and as AE52 in the 9/11 case.

But it said it has refused and has filed a legal complaint instead, arguing that the images could constitute evidence in the case, said the official, who is not authorised to be publicly named.

Nice attack: When justice minister demanded the mayor destroy 24 hours of footage | 21 July 2016 | Info Le Figaro - An urgent legal requisition was sent to urban supervision center of Nice Wednesday, July 20. The Paris prosecutor evokes a desire to "avoid the uncontrolled dissemination of these images." Panic and incomprehension in the office of mayor of Nice. Wednesday at 11 am, the Anti-Terrorism Sub-Directorate (SDAT) sent two agents who manage video surveillance of the city, with a requisition citing Articles 53 and L706-24 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and Article R642-1 of the Penal Code asking them for a "complete" erasure of 24 hours of images from six cameras named and numbered, but also of all the scenes from the beginning of the attack that took place on the Promenade des Anglais, on the night of July 14. The state agents of urban supervision center of Nice are stunned. "This is the first time we are asked to destroy evidence, says a source close to the investigation. The center of CCTV and the city of Nice could be prosecuted for this and also the officers in charge of the device don't have jurisdiction to engage in such operations."

The man, who entered Germany in 2014 but was denied asylum, detonated a backpack around 10 p.m. on Sunday, near the entrance to an open-air music festival that was attended by about 2,000 people. Of the 15 people wounded, four had grave injuries. It was the second attack in Germany in one week linked to the Islamic State: On July 18, in Würzburg, a 17-year-old who registered as an Afghan refugee wielding an ax wounded four passengers on a train and a woman walking her dog before police officers fatally shot him.

German police said they arrested the machete-wielding Syrian asylum-seeker after he killed a woman and injured two other people in the southwestern city of Reutlingen near Stuttgart. The Syrian had been involved in previous incidents causing injuries to others, and had apparently acted alone, a police spokesman said.

Munich shooting: Attacker researched rampage killings, police say | 23 July 2016 | The teen gunman who killed nine people in a shooting rampage in Munich on Friday was a mentally troubled individual who had extensively researched spree killings and had no apparent links to ISIS, police said. Speaking at a press conference in the southern German city Saturday, police officials said the 18-year-old lone attacker -- who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound -- had no political motivations, and no references to religion had been found in documents in his home. Rather, investigators searching his belongings found numerous documents on rampage killings, including a book entitled "Rampage in My Mind -- Why Students Kill," said Robert Heimberger, president of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.

In the past they have abandoned their guns, flak jackets and helmets in favour of swimming trunks, sunglasses and T-shirts when taking up the much coveted perch on a lifeguard's chair. The officers in charge of beach first-aid centres and their deputies will now carry guns in sand-proof holsters, specially designed for use with beachwear. Bullet-proof vests will be kept near lifeguard posts.

Between 14 and 16 people were wounded, with their injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, according to police. A local hospital said victims were between 12 and 27 years old.

Gregory Hubbard, also known as "Jibreel," told the informant that he had a local friend "in touch" with a Syrian national who was a member of ISIL, according to a criminal complaint. Hubbard introduced the informant, who was posing as an ISIL sympathizer bent on traveling to Syria, to the friend - as well as another colleague seeking to join the same violent jihad...The three Palm Beach County men were charged with conspiring and attempting to support the Islamic State.

The figures mean that there is absolutely "no return to normal after nuclear catastrophe" in the area. On Thursday, the environmental group released a report addressing the results of the study during which scientists analyzed radioactivity levels along Fukushima's rivers and in the Pacific seabed off the coast.

MH370 Pilot Flew a Suicide Route on His Home Simulator Closely Matching Final Flight | 22 July 2016 |New York has obtained a confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that shows that the plane's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, conducted a simulated flight deep into the remote southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the plane vanished under uncannily similar circumstances. The revelation, which Malaysia withheld from a lengthy public report on the investigation, is the strongest evidence yet that Zaharie made off with the plane in a premeditated act of mass murder-suicide. The document presents the findings of the Malaysian police's investigation into Zaharie.

White House to review ban on military gear for police - police leaders | 21 July 2016 | The White House will revisit a 2015 ban on police forces getting riot gear, armored vehicles and other military-grade equipment from the U.S. armed forces, two police organization directors told Reuters on Thursday. Shortly after the recent shooting deaths of police officers, President Barack Obama agreed to review each banned item, the two law enforcement leaders said. That could result in changes to the ban imposed in May 2015 on the transfer of some equipment from the military to police, said Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, and Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations.

Bernie Sanders Backers March Against Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia | 24 July 2016 | A large, boisterous crowd of Bernie Sanders supporters - chanting, "Hell, no, D.N.C., we won't vote for Hillary" - marched on Sunday afternoon toward the site of the Democratic National Convention, promising a week in which the party’s divisions will be on vivid display in the streets. The parade set off from City Hall led by a banner proclaiming, "Help End Establishment Politics, Vote No on Hillary." Despite 97-degree heat, more than 1,000 people from as far as Seattle and Florida participated in the first of what are expected to be many rallies in support of Mr. Sanders, a Vermont senator. It was far larger than any of the protest marches last week in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention, though there were no signs of confrontations early on between demonstrators and either supporters of Donald J. Trump or the police, who maintained a low-key, even casual presence.

Democratic Party chair jeered in protest ahead of convention | 25 July 2016 | Chaos broke out ahead of the U.S. Democratic Party convention on Monday as protesters jeered the party chairwoman over leaked emails showing Democratic officials worked to undermine Bernie Sanders in his presidential primary battle with Hillary Clinton. Hours before the start of the four-day gathering to nominate Clinton for the White House, outgoing Democratic National Committee head Debbie Wasserman Schultz struggled to be heard above boos as she spoke to the Democratic delegation from her home state, Florida. Protesters held up signs that read "Bernie" and "E-MAILS" and shouted "Shame," as she spoke. Others at the meeting cheered and clapped for Wasserman Schultz, who is stepping down over the email controversy.

Democratic National Committee apologizes to Sanders over emails | 25 July 2016 | The Democratic National Committee apologized to Senator Bernie Sanders on Monday after leaked emails suggested the party's leadership had worked to sabotage Sanders' presidential campaign. "On behalf of everyone at the DNC, we want to offer a deep and sincere apology to Senator Sanders, his supporters, and the entire Democratic Party for the inexcusable remarks made over email," the DNC said in a statement released on the opening day of the party's convention in Philadelphia.

Wasserman Schultz to Have a New Role in Clinton Campaign | 24 July 2016 | Hillary Clinton is thanking her “longtime friend” Debbie Wasserman Schultz after the Florida congresswoman’s decision to step down as chair of the Democratic National Committee. Clinton says that Wasserman Schultz will serve as honorary chair of her campaign’s 50-state program to help elect Democrats around the country.

Wasserman Schultz Steps Down as DNC Chair Over Leaked Emails | 24 July 2016 | Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee at the end of the party's convention, which is set to begin here Monday. The Florida congresswoman's resignation -- under pressure from top Democrats -- comes amid hackers' release of emails that show DNC staffers favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the party's 2016 nominating contest. Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation in a statement Sunday afternoon, saying she remains committed to seeing Clinton elected president.

DNC chair won't speak at Dem convention following WikiLeaks fallout | 23 July 2016 | The head of the Democratic National Committee [Debbie Wasserman Schultz] will not speak at the party's convention next week, a decision reached by party officials Saturday after emails surfaced that raised questions about the committee's impartiality during the Democratic primary. The revelation comes following the release of nearly 20,000 emails. One email appears to show DNC staffers asking how they can reference Bernie Sanders's faith to weaken him in the eyes of Southern voters. Another seems to depict an attorney advising the committee on how to defend Hillary Clinton against an accusation by the Sanders campaign of not living up to a joint fundraising agreement.

Clinton's campaign manager: Russia helping Trump | 24 July 2016 | Hillary Clinton's campaign manager is alleging that Russian hackers are leaking Democratic National Committee emails critical of Bernie Sanders in an effort to help Donald Trump win the election in November. It comes on the heels of "changes to the Republican platform to make it more pro-Russian," Robby Mook told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday. "I don't think it's coincidental that these emails were released on the eve of our convention here, and I think that's disturbing," he said.

Search the DNC email database | 22 July 2016 | Today, Friday 22 July 2016 at 10:30am EDT, WikiLeaks releases 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the top of the US Democratic National Committee -- part one of our new Hillary Leaks series. The emails cover the period from January last year until 25 May this year. [Be sure to read this email, "Panel on Dems [sic] path forward," from Jeremy Brinster, dated 24 April 2016. In it, we read: "Yes, Super PAC paying young voters to push back online on Sanders supporters."]

Clinton Picks TPP Supporter Kaine as VP in Move Toward Center for Election | 22 July 2016 | Hillary Clinton named Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate for the Democratic presidential ticket, a widely-anticipated choice that may say more about how she wants to govern than how she plans to win in November. Clinton made the announcement Friday in a text message to supporters. Kaine, 58, a white Catholic from a battleground state who's fluent in Spanish, is a safe choice for the woman who will this week become the first-ever female presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party. He's also a supporter of free trade, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership [corporate takeover] that President Barack Obama's administration negotiated with 11 other nations, and which awaits ratification in Congress.

Tim Kaine, Outspoken Advocate of the TPP, Seems Likely for Hillary Clinton's No. 2 | 21 July 2016 | Democrats close to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign signaled strongly Thursday that she would choose Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia as her running mate, rounding out the ticket with a popular politician from a battleground state...Liberals say they are concerned about Mr. Kaine's positions on global trade deals and Wall Street regulation. He has been an outspoken advocate of free trade and has defended the North American Free Trade Agreement, which many voters in Rust Belt states blame for the loss of manufacturing jobs to Mexico. He voted in support of "fast track" authority for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade pact corporate takeover that President Obama has championed. Two others under consideration, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez, also supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership...Putting Mr. Kaine on the ticket "could be disastrous for our efforts to defeat Donald Trump in the fall" because of his support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, said Charles Chamberlain, executive director of Democracy for America, a liberal political action committee.

Donald Trump bounces into the lead | 25 July 2016 | The bounce is back. Donald Trump comes out of his convention ahead of Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, topping her 44% to 39% in a four-way matchup including Gary Johnson (9%) and Jill Stein (3%) and by three points in a two-way head-to-head, 48% to 45%. That latter finding represents a 6-point convention bounce for Trump, which are traditionally measured in two-way matchups. There hasn't been a significant post-convention bounce in CNN's polling since 2000.

Trump: Claim That Russia Hacked DNC to Help Him Is a 'Joke' | 25 July 2016 | Donald Trump said Monday that any suggestion the Russians hacked and leaked Democratic Party emails on his behalf is a "joke." The timing of the embarrassing leak on the eve of the Democratic National Convention put fresh attention on relations between Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, who have praised each other, and on close ties between key members of Trump's inner circle and Russian businesses and officials. Hillary Clinton's campaign manager alleged over the weekend that the leak was designed to help Trump after his campaign operatives [thankfully] pushed changes to the Republican convention platform "to make it more pro-Russian" - reportedly removing language in support of sanctions for Russia and new weapons for [the Nazis running] Ukraine. In a tweet, Trump scoffed at the notion, writing, "The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC e-mails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me."

Mexican President SLAMS Trump, Compares Him to Hitler and Mussolini | 29 June 2016 | Sometimes, it seems like the who world is out to get Donald Trump - and that's why so many Americans like him in the first place. Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto compared Donald Trump to Hitler and Mussolini today at the North American Leaders Summit Meeting in Ottawa, Canada. Nieto does not like Trump's promise to build a wall and clamp down on illegal immigrants and his announcement yesterday that Trump would renegotiate NAFTA.

Ex-New York Official Rejects Trump's Golf Course Claim: 'It's Simply Not True' | 22 July 2016 | Just before Donald J. Trump took the stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on Thursday night, the actor Jon Voight narrated a breezy video biography of the candidate highlighting his can-do abilities. "He took over another city project tied up in red tape since 1978," Mr. Voight says with none of the charm or the menace of his character on Showtime's "Ray Donovan" series. "Donald transformed a landfill into a championship public golf course and saved the city millions." But it was a shot into the rough for Mr. Voight and Mr. Trump's oft-told creation myth of the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx.

The Death of Wilson: How the Academic Left Created Donald Trump | 18 July 2016 | Why should a minimum wage retail worker think they somehow immorally benefit by dint of blue eyes and pale skin? Why should they listen to some bohemian asshole who’s both morally and intellectually self-righteous? Why shouldn’t they feel aggrieved on all sides, economically and culturally disenfranchised?

Virginia court invalidates Gov. Terry McAuliffe's order restoring felon voting rights | 22 July 2016 | The Supreme Court of Virginia has ruled against Gov. Terry McAuliffe's order restoring voting rights to more than 200,000 felons who completed their sentences, a decision that dealt a major blow to the Democratic governor and has implications for the November presidential race in the crucial swing state. In a 4-3 ruling issued Friday, the court ruled that McAuliffe overstepped his clemency powers under the state constitution by issuing a sweeping order in April restoring rights to all ex-offenders who are no longer incarcerated or on probation or parole. The court agreed with state Republicans who challenge McAuliffe's order, arguing voting rights should be restored on a case-by-case basis.

Thousands of firefighters battle fast-spreading wildfire near Los Angeles | 25 July 2016 | More than 1,600 firefighters battled on Monday to contain a fast-spreading wildfire that has forced hundreds of evacuations in the drought-parched canyons north of Los Angeles, destroying 18 homes, killing at least one person and closing a highway. Authorities said the Sand Fire had grown to more than 33,000 acres (13,300 hectares) by early Monday, or more than 50 square miles (130 square km), fueled by high winds and parched conditions after years of drought. It was threatening a string of small communities near Santa Clarita, just outside the Angeles National Forest, the Los Angeles county sheriff's department said.
