Mantle | 21 July 2016 | Donald John Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night with an unusually vehement appeal to Americans who feel that their country is spiraling out of control and yearn for a leader who will take aggressive, even extreme, actions to protect them. Mr. Trump, 70, a New York real estate developer and reality television star who leveraged his fame and forceful persona to become the rare political outsider to lead the ticket of a major party, drew exuberant cheers from Republican convention delegates as he strode onto the stage of the Quicken Lo-ns Arena and delivered a speech as fiery as his candidacy.  Mr. Trump also challenged Republican orthodoxy as he promised to end multilateral trade deals and limit American intervention in global crises. He denounced "15 years of wars in the Middle East" -- a rebuke of his party's last president [sic], George W. Bush -- and pledged to help union members, coal miners and other low-wage Americans who have historically supported Democrats.

"Friends, delegates, and fellow Americans, I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States," Trump said. Then he joined the crowd in their chants, "USA! U.S.-backed Syrian 'rebels' behead young boy --U.S.: Beheading could affect U.S. support of 'rebels' [Yeah, the U.S. will give them even MORE money] | 21 July 2016 | Gruesome video footage has emerged of Syrian rebels terrorists beheading a young boy, in what leaders of the group involved called an "individual mistake." The video that emerged on social media showed a visibly frightened boy lying in the back of a truck alongside what appeared to be several rebel fighters. The rebels claimed the boy was a prisoner from Liwa al-Quds -- a pro-regimegovernment militia force made up mostly of Palestinians in Syria -- and that he was captured from an unofficial refugee camp north of war-torn Aleppo.

 

Erdogan declares three-month state of emergency in Turkey | 20 July 2016 | Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a three-month state of emergency in the country in the aftermath of the coup attempt last Friday. The decision, announced in a televised press conference on Wednesday night, came after marathon meetings of the country's national security council and the cabinet in Ankara. Article 121 of the Turkish constitution, which regulates the state of emergency, requires parliament to give its consent to the decision and sets a maximum period of six months for it. It allows the cabinet under the chairmanship of the president to issue decrees that have the force of law on matters relating to the state of emergency.

 

Brazil arrests 10 for 'amateur' terror plot against Olympics | 21 July 2016 | Brazil arrested 10 people on Thursday suspected of belonging to a poorly organized group supporting Islamic State (IS) and discussing terrorist acts during the next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The group, described as "absolutely amateur" by Justice Minister Alexandre Moraes, were all Brazilian citizens...They did not know each other personally, the minister said. The arrests came a week after a truck massacre in Nice, France, and amid growing fears of a possible attack when the first Olympics to be held in South America kicks off on Aug. 5.

 

Nice attacker 'plotted for months and had accomplices' | 21 July 2016 | The man who drove a truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, killing 84 people and injuring hundreds more, had help planning the attack, the Paris prosecutor, François Molins, has revealed. Evidence from mobile phones and computer records suggested that Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was not a recently radicalised "lone wolf", as previously thought, but had several accomplices and had planned his attack for up to a year. Molins told a press conference on Thursday that after the attack on the offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine in January 2015, in which 12 people died, Bouhlel sent a text message to one suspect that read: "I am not Charlie. I'm happy they have brought some of Allah’s soldiers to finish the job."

 

German train attacker vowed 'revenge on these infidels' | 20 July 2016 | A 17-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker received word that a friend had died in his home country days before he went on a rampage with an ax and knife on a German train, wounding five. He vowed in a note that he would "take revenge on these infidels," German investigators said Tuesday. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack Monday night, but authorities say so far they have found no direct links to the group and believe the suspect, whose name was not released, self-radicalized.

 

Man 'studying waves and radiation' arrested by Brussels police as suspected terrorist | 20 July 2016 |  Police have arrested a man wearing a "long coat and wires" in Brussels, prompting fears that he could have been a terrorist. However, a statement by authorities later said the man was simply studying waves and radiation. The man was arrested by special units and taken to a nearby police station, said Christian De Coninck, a spokesman for the Brussels-Ixelle police, as quoted by Le Vif. Prior to being arrested, the man was kept under armed police guard for hours, near a library adjacent to the Royal Monnaie Opera, AP reported.

Some 125,000 red, white and blue balloons and 1,000 pounds of confetti that were tied up at the ceiling for the week were finally released on the Quicken Loans Arena crowd. Fireworks erupted outside the "Q." On the Jumbotron read "Trump Pence Make America Great Again." The Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, was joined on stage by his family and his Vice Presidential pick Mike Pence.

 

Donald Trump accepts presidential nomination | 22 July 2016 | Donald Trump conjured a dire picture Thursday of an America sliding deeper into poverty, violence and corruption and declared himself the only person who could avert disaster. Accepting the Republican nomination in Cleveland, the candidate twice pledged to be a "voice" for working Americans, restore law and order and to confound elites and doubters by winning the White House in November. "Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it," Trump said. "My message is that things have to change -- and they have to change right now."

 

Ivanka Trump introduces her father - with a personal appeal to women | 21 July 2016 | Ivanka Trump, the polished, careful daughter of a shoot-from-the-hip presidential candidate, made a personal appeal to women voters tonight who remain skeptical of a Trump presidency, describing her father "as a fighter" for the nation and women. Remarkably, the nominee's elder daughter told the party faithful at the Republican National Convention that "I do not consider myself categorically Republican or Democrat." Rather, the 34-year-old said that, like many Millennials, "more than party affiliation, I vote based on what I believe is right for my family and my country. My father values talent," said Ivanka Trump, a vice president of the family Trump Organization.

 

A gay Silicon Valley billionaire just made GOP history at the RNC | 21 July 2016 | Peter Thiel encouraged the GOP to not get distracted by culture wars on stage Thursday night, saluting Donald Trump for not focusing on such things as he made history. The tech billion-ire declared to the Republican National Convention that he is "proud to be gay," becoming the first speaker in the party's history to do so from the stage of the Republican National Convention. "Every American has a unique identity. I am proud to be gay," he said to applause, including from the Trump family...He warned the party against fighting on social issues and encouraged Republicans to let transgender people use whichever bathroom they want to use.

 

Mike Pence accepts GOP nomination for vice president | 21 July 2016 | Indiana Gov. Mike Pence accepted the Republican nomination for Vice President Wednesday night, promising to help presidential nominee Donald Trump bring "common sense" leadership to Washington and defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. In his speech, Pence sought to persuade recalcitrant Republicans and impendent voters that there is another side to the bombastic presidential candidate who nearly swept a brutal primary season. Trump will accept the party's nomination for President Thursday night.

 

Roger Stone, Alex Jones plot primary challenge to Cruz | 21 July 2016 | (Cleveland) Two controversial figures on the right met late Wednesday night over drinks to plot a primary challenge to Ted Cruz after the Texas senator refused to endorse Donald Trump at the Republican convention here. Renegade GOP operative Roger Stone said he and Infowars founder Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist, are planting the seeds to ensure Cruz is sent packing from Washington when his first term ends in 2018. "We're actively looking for a candidate," Stone told The Hill.

The Texas Senator addressed the millions of Americans sitting at home and told them to 'speak and vote your conscience' – prompting his own supporters to cheer, while some pro-Trump delegates yelled out in disgust. Some on the floor and others seated in the stands began yelling 'Trump, Trump Trump' to shout down pro-Cruz forces. Throughout his speech, which ended with him leaving the stage to boos and chants of "Trump," Cruz sidestepped any other reference to Trump and barely touched on the candidate's policies - and came far from endorsing his candidacy. Instead, the Texas lawmaker spent his time on stage giving what appeared to be a speech announcing his own candidacy for 2020.

 

Melania Trump's Speechwriter Comes Forward to Apologize | 20 July 2016 | An in-house writer and longtime friend of the Trump family has stepped forward with an apology for her involvement in the preparation of Melania Trump's address at the Republican National Convention Monday night, which bore similarities to a 2008 Michelle Obama speech. Staffer Meredith McIver said she submitted her resignation Tuesday but the Trump family rejected it. "A person she [Melania] has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech," McIver said in a statement, released this afternoon and written under Trump Organization letterhead. "This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as Mrs. Obama..."

 

Tiny wall built around Trump's Hollywood Star | 20 July 2016 | This probably wasn't the wall Donald Trump had in mind. On Tuesday, the same day Trump was officially nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate, a wall sprung up around his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. The tiny wall, complete with barbed wire and "Keep Out" signs, was constructed by popular Los Angeles street artist Plastic Jesus.

 

Hours Before Hillary Clinton's VP Decision, Likely Pick Tim Kaine Praises the TPP | 21 July 2016 | Hillary Clinton's rumored vice presidential pick Sen. Tim Kaine defended his vote for fast-tracking the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on Thursday. Kaine, who spoke to The Interceptafter an event at a Northern Virginia mosque, praised the agreement as an improvement of the status quo, but maintained that he had not yet decided how to vote on final approval of the agreement. By contrast, Hillary Clinton has qualified her previous encouragement of the agreement, and now says she opposes it. Kaine's measured praise of the agreement could signal one of two things. Either he is out of the running for the vice presidential spot, as his position on this major issue stands in opposition to hers. Or, by picking him, Clinton is signaling that her newly declared opposition to the agreement is not sincere.

 

U.S. appeals court finds Texas voter ID law discriminatory | 20 July 2016 | A Texas law requiring voters to show a government-issued form of photo identification before casting a ballot is discriminatory and violates the U.S. Voting Rights Act, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in a close decision among a special 15-judge panel, also sent the case back to a district court to examine claims by the plaintiffs that the law had a discriminatory purpose. The New Orleans-based Fifth Circuit, which has a reputation as one of the most conservative federal appeals courts, asked the district court for a short-term fix to be used in Texas in the November general election.

 

Marine vet, 81, held hostage in motel room for 4 years, police reveal | 21 July 2016 | (Highlands, NY) A man held an 81-year-old Marine Corps veteran hostage in his squalid motel room for at least four years in order to steal his benefits checks, authorities said Thursday. [Dirt-bag] Perry Coniglio was arrested Tuesday in his room adjoining the victim's at a motel in Highlands. The motel sits next door to the police station in the Hudson Valley town, about 50 miles north of New York City. Coniglio, 43, used brute force and intimidation to get the mentally diminished veteran to cooperate with him, police said. The elderly man has advanced dementia, according to police.

 

Roger Ailes resigns as CEO of Fox News | 21 July 2016 | Roger Ailes has resigned from his role as chairman and CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, and his role as chairman of Fox Television Stations, 21st Century Fox said on Thursday. Rupert Murdoch will assume the role of chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, the company said...The embattled Ailes stands accused of misconduct by Gretchen Carlson, a former host who said in a lawsuit that he sexually harassed her during her tenure at the network.

 

Cop shoots caretaker of autistic man playing in the street with toy truck | 20 July 2016 | (North Miami, FL) When a 23-year-old autistic man carrying a toy truck wandered from a mental health center out into the street Monday, a worker there named Charles Kinsey went to retrieve him. A few minutes later the autistic man was still sitting cross-legged blocking the roadway while playing with the small, rectangular white toy. And Kinsey was prone on the ground next to him -- a bullet from an assault rifle fired by a police officer having struck his leg. "He throws his hands up in the air and says, 'Don't shoot me.' They say lie on the ground, so he does," Kinsey's attorney Hilton Napoleon said Wednesday.

 

Kansas police officer shot and killed responding to shooting report | 19 July 2016 | A Kansas City, Kan. police officer was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while responding to a reported drive-by shooting. Officials said Capt. Robert David Melton, 46, was pronounced dead at University of Kansas Hospital at 2:55 p.m. local time. Later Tuesday, authorities said the suspected shooter was caught about a block away from where Melton was shot. The suspect was being questioned along with a second person suspected in the initial drive-by...
