Breaking: Fidel Castro, Cuba's revolutionary leader, dies aged 90 | 26 Nov 2016 | Fidel Castro has died at the age of 90, Cuban state television announced on Saturday, ending an era for the country and Latin America. The revolutionary icon, one of the world's best-known and most controversial leaders, survived countless US assassination attempts and premature obituaries, but in the end proved mortal after suffering a long battle with illness. The announcement was long expected, given the former president's age and health problems, but when it came it was still a shock...More than half a century ago, his guerrilla army of "bearded ones" replaced Fulgencio Batista’s corrupt dictatorship with communist rule that challenged the US and turned the island into a cold-war crucible.

 

Cuba's Fidel Castro, former president, dies aged 90 | 26 Nov 2016 | Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has died aged 90, state TV has announced. It provided no further details. Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost half a century before handing over the powers to his brother Raul in 2008. His supporters praised him as a man who had given Cuba back to the people.

 

Newly-Released Documents Confirm Bureau of Prisons Visit to CIA Torture Site in Afghanistan | 25 Nov 2016 | One of the many alarming facts that came to light with the release of the executive summary of the Senate Torture Report in 2014 was that the Justice Department's Bureau of Prisons had sent a "delegation of several officers" to Afghanistan to conduct an assessment an infamous CIA detention site and concluded the CIA "did not mistreat the detainees." Senate investigators found that the bureau officers visited a detention site codenamed Cobalt north of Kabul in November 2002...In April, the ACLU filed suit to obtain documents related to the visit, which the Bureau of Prisons initially claimed did not exist. The bureau has now turned over several emails mentioning the visit -- along with a written declaration by a senior Bureau of Prisons lawyer explaining the attempted cover-up. That declaration states that the officers were tasked orally, so that there was no record of their travel, and that the CIA forbade the two officers from producing records of or about the visit.

 

Prison officials visited CIA 'dungeon,' but kept no record of the trip | 21 Nov 2016 | The Bureau of Prisons has acknowledged for the first time that two of its officials traveled 14 years ago to a secret CIA detention site in Afghanistan, where they provided training to staff at a facility once described by an intelligence official as "the closest thing he has seen to a dungeon." The admission came Thursday in response to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU, which sued in April after the Bureau of Prisons denied having any record of involvement with the detention site. The Bureau of Prisons' November 2002 visit to the site -- known interchangeably as "The Salt Pit" and COBALT -- was documented in a Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture, interrogation and detention, which was released in 2014.

 

Obama administration never aimed to fight terrorism in Syria - Russian MoD | 24 Nov 2016 |  US officials have previously "dragged out" efforts to fight jihadists in Syria, but now they are attempting to "openly obstruct" Russia's anti-terrorist operation in the region, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "Previously, the US side showed a counteraction to Russia fighting ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] and Al-Nusra [Front] through dragging out any talks, failures to meet obligations to separate the opposition from terrorists and constant promises to some day provide information on the militants," the ministry's spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said on Thursday. Now the State Department "has openly called on other countries to obstruct our Air Force in fighting international terrorism in Syria," he added.

 

U.S. soldier fighting ISIS is killed in northern Syria after stepping on an explosive near Raqqa | 24 Nov 2016 | A U.S. soldier has been killed by an explosive device in northern Syria. The serviceman died from wounds he suffered when stepping on an improvised explosive device near the town of Ayn Issa - about 30 miles north of Raqqa. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the death in a statement released on Thursday afternoon. 

 

UN chemical watchdog refused to send experts to Aleppo under Western pressure - Lavrov | 22 Nov 2016 | The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons refuses to send its experts to Aleppo to check substances used by rebels in attacks. The move was "seemingly done under pressure from our Western colleagues," Russia's foreign minister said. "Russian specialists found that militants in east Aleppo used ammunition with poisonous substances, with the ammo targeting west Aleppo. The collected samples leave no doubt that it's a toxic agent," Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference with his Belarusian counterpart in Minsk, as cited by Interfax.

 

Syrian Army Kills 3 Turk Soldiers and Wounds 10 in Al-Baab --Syrian Army Exterminates Rat Leadership in Aleppo | 24 Nov 2016 | If you want to know why the rodents are revving up the media blitz in Aleppo, just look at their losses and the Syrian Army's advance into the Hanaanu Residential Area. Yesterday, rodent supporters, the few left, posed for photos holding the French mandate flag in front of them begging for international help...NATO efforts to impose a cease-fire now depend on Russia's and Syria's approval which is not expected to come since the last time there was such a cease fire, the rodents used it to strengthen their positions and smuggle weapons into Aleppo. The Russians won't be fooled again.

 

Norway refuses to grant Edward Snowden guarantee against extradition | 26 Nov 2016 | Edward Snowden's plea for free passage to Norway to collect an award has been turned down by the country's supreme court. The whistleblower, who copied and leaked thousands of sensitive documents three years ago, is currently living in Russia...In April Mr Snowden took the Norwegian authorities to court seeking a guarantee that he would not be extradited if he entered the country to collect a free speech award. But, the Independent reported, his case was rejected by the Norway's supreme court.

 

French terror suspects took orders from ISIS --Men arrested last week communicated via encrypted apps, Paris prosecutor says | 25 Nov 2016 | Five men arrested this week in two French cities wereplanning a terror attack in France as early as next week and were receiving their orders from an Islamic State group member based in Iraq or Syria, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Friday. The five were arrested on Sunday, four of them in the eastern city of Strasbourg, and one in the southern city of Marseille. Molins said the Strasbourg "commando" of four was plotting a terror act on Dec. 1, but investigators haven't yet determined what was "the specific chosen target among all those considered by the group."

 

Montpellier terror attack fears as 'gunman bursts into monks' retirement home and ties up woman before killing her | 25 Nov 2016 | A hooded gunman man has stormed a retirement home for monks in France and killed two people, according to reports. An elderly female warder was found gagged and tied up before being killed with a knife, said the source. The gunman is believed to have broken into the building in Montpellier, France, on Thursday evening. According to unverified reports in France, the man was wearing a hoodie and carrying a sawn-off shotgun.

 

NYPD on alert after recent police shootings across U.S. | 21 Nov 2016 | NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill is urging the city's cops to stay vigilant after four police officers were shot, one fatally, over a 12-hour span across the country Sunday. "The safety of the men and women of the NYPD is my top priority. As you perform your duties today, and every day, please maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times," O’Neill wrote in an "officer safety message" distributed Monday.

 

Wisconsin Agrees to Presidential Vote Recount at Third-Party Candidates' Request | 25 Nov 2016 | The Wisconsin Elections Commission announced Friday that it would hold a statewide recount of the presidential vote. The move was in response to petitions from two candidates, the Green Party's Jill Stein and independent Rocky Roque De La Fuente. Federal law requires that all recounts be finished 35 days after the election, which is Dec. 13. One or both of the candidates will be required to pay for the recount. "We have assembled an internal team to direct the recount, we have been in close consultation with our county clerk partners, and have arranged for legal representation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice," said Wisconsin Elections Commission Director Mike Haas in a statement. [Where were the third-party requests for a recount in 2004, when George W. Bush won Wisconsin by a more narrow margin than Trump did in 2016?]

 

Ex-CIA boss Petraeus indicates would serve Trump if asked | 23 Nov 2016 | Retired U.S. general David Petraeus indicated on Wednesday that he would serve in President-elect Donald Trump's administration if he was offered a job, according to an interview on Britain's BBC radio. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Petraeus, who resigned as CIA chief in 2012 after an extra-marital affair was revealed, was under consideration for the post of defense secretary.

 

Trump: US to quit TPP 'trade' deal on first day in office | 21 Nov 2016 | President-elect Donald Trump says the US will quit the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal corporate takeover on his first day in the White House. He made the announcement in a video message outlining what he intends to do first when he takes office in January. The TPP trade deal was signed by 12 countries which together cover 40% of the world's economy. The Republican also pledged to reduce "job-killing restrictions" on coal production and stop visa abuses.

 

Donald Trump's media summit was a 'f---ing firing squad' | 21 Nov 2016 | Donald Trump scolded media big shots during an off-the-record Trump Tower sit-down on Monday, sources told The Post. "It was like a f---ing firing squad," one source said of the encounter. "Trump started with [CNN chief] Jeff Zucker and said 'I hate your network, everyone at CNN is a liar and you should be ashamed,'" the source said..."Trump kept saying, 'We're in a room of liars, the deceitful dishonest media who got it all wrong.' He addressed everyone in the room calling the media dishonest, deceitful liars. He called out Jeff Zucker by name and said everyone at CNN was a liar, and CNN was [a] network of liars," the source said.

 

UNH Prof: No one can say Trump supporters are 'equal' to Trump opponents | 21 Nov 2016 | Professors at the University of New Hampshire are calling for the expulsion of two students who counter protested an anti-Trump rally while wearing Harambe and Richard Nixon costumes. The post led several current professors to call for the expulsion of the students, even writing sample letters to administrators in the comments...Another English professor and Women's Studies Program faculty member, Siobhan Senier, drafted a letter to UNH President Huddleston and Provost Targett, claiming that the Harambe costume is "harassing, intimidating, and racist...And yet no critically thinking person can say that people supporting and people opposing Donald Trump are 'equal.'" Donald Trump supporter Milo Yiannopoulos barred from speaking at former school after government intervened | 21 Nov 2016 | One of Donald Trump's most provocative supporters has been barred from speaking at his former grammar school in the UK after the Government's counter-extremism unit intervened. Milo Yiannopoulos, a 32-year-old  British journalist who has become the face of America's "alt-right" movement, was due to speak at the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury. Mr Yiannopoulos accused Theresa May, the Prime Minister, of being a "total fascist" and accused her of deploying "sinister counter extremist goons" to bar him from speaking.

 

Alabama Trump supporter labeled 'racist of the week' on social media 'no longer works' at bank after anti-Obama post | 25 Nov 2016 | An Alabama Trump supporter and former bank employee no longer works at the company after writing an anti-Obama Facebook post, which earned her the 'racist of the week' label. June Pridmore had worked as a senior vice-president of loan operations since 2008 at Birmingham-based Regions Bank, according to Al.com. She came under fire earlier this week for writing a post rejoicing about Donald Trump's victory and slamming President Barack Obama as well as his wife. Pridmore praised Trump for having 'a beautiful wife' and lots of money, adding: 'I prefer a man who can buy Michele [sic] and Barack and sell them several times over.'

 

Army Corps Orders Dakota Pipeline Protesters Out | 25 Nov 2016 | A new confrontation is brewing over the Dakota Access Pipeline. Protesters fighting pipeline construction must vacate property near the Cannonball River in North Dakota -- the location of a large campsite for demonstrators -- by December 5 or face arrest, the Army Corps of Engineers said Friday.

 

Police threw grenade at DAPL protesters - father of activist who faces amputation | 22 Nov 2016 | A Dakota Access Pipeline demonstrator may lose her arm after a direct hit from a concussion grenade used by law enforcement officers at the protest site, according to her father. Authorities have denied using any weapons that could have caused such damage. Pipeline protester Dallas Goldtooth identified the woman as fellow demonstrator Sophia Wilansky, saying she was "struck directly by a concussion grenade" during the Sunday protest on a bridge near Cannon Ball, North Dakota.

 

Waves from 7.4 quake reach Fukushima nuclear power plant | 22 Nov 2016 | Tsunami waves hit areas along the Japanese coast after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima prefecture. Hours later a magnitude 6.3 earthquake also struck New Zealand about 1.19pm local time (11.19am AEDT). Sirens rang out in the early hours of Tuesday morning as residents were urged to evacuate immediately following the Japanese quake...A one metre tsunami wave also hit the coast at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where a massive tsunami caused a meltdown[s] in 2011.

 

M7.4 earthquake off Fukushima was aftershock from 2011 megaquake - agency | 22 Nov 2016 | A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 hit northeastern Japan on Tuesday morning, the Meteorological Agency said, with a tsunami of over 1 meter observed in Miyagi Prefecture and other areas on the Pacific coast. The quake is an aftershock of the March 2011 earthquake that, along with ensuing tsunami, devastated wide coastal areas in northeastern Japan, the agency said. Some people suffered minor injuries in Fukushima, according to local firefighters...A wave of about 1 meter reached the coast where the Fukushima No. 1 complex is located, according to its operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.

 

Tsunami of 60 cm reaches Fukushima coast after earthquake - NHK | 21 Nov 2016 | A 60 cm (2 foot) tsunami had been observed at Fukushima's Onahama Port and a 90 cm (3 foot) tsunami at Soma soon after, public broadcaster NHK said. The region is the same that was devastated by a tsunami following a massive earthquake in 2011. A tsunami warning of up to 3 meters (10 feet) has been issued.

 

At least 6 dead in Chattanooga, Tennessee, school bus crash | 21 Nov 2016 | A school bus slammed into a tree and split apart Monday, killing at least six children in Chattanooga, Tennessee, officials said. A spokeswoman for the Hamilton County District Attorney's Office confirmed the death toll. But Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher would only say "multiple children" were killed, declining to specify how many died because the scene was still active. Fletcher said the bus, which was carrying 35 students in kindergarten through fifth-grade from Woodmore Elementary School, turned over on its side and struck the tree.
