Countercurrents proposes to launch a platform for sharing our common experiences, insights, news of struggles as a beginning towards the creation of a movement of South Asians for Peace and Democracy. We invite all those interested to write and contribute the evolution of this platform from around the region as we dream of a united South Asia that is peaceful, democratic and ensures freedom and justice to all its citizens.
We begin a weekly video series in collaboration with Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), a weekly round up of human rights violations across Asia. The first series is featured today.

The US president was in Warsaw, a historic city, and was delivering a speech in front of people gathered at Krasinski Square, and was speaking at a news conference. All these happened on July 6, 2017, a Thursday, near-end of a week, and on the eve of the G-20 summit in Hamburg, also a historic city, now being secured by mobilizing at least 20,000 police in the face of forceful protests by thousands of people denouncing capitalism and inequality, and expressing concern over climate crisis.

Both the ruling Congress party in Punjab and the opposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)- a Hindu nationalist force have come out openly against these posters. Under these circumstances, the SFJ activists have been booked for sedition. Notably, the BJP has been calling for tearing them down and stringent police action. So much so, they had threatened to take them down on their own.

What is the real agenda of the hysteria being built around cow? Why at this point of time this is being intensified? Is it that starting from the Cow vigilantes to their highest priest Mr. Bhagawat, all are committed to the welfare of cow? Are they out to see that this animal, which according to them houses 33 crore Gods and Goddesses in her body and whose dung and urine have medicinal properties doing all this for the love of her? It is unlikely that they have the welfare of cow at heart. Had that been so their primary concern it would have been better to ensure that cows don’t die by consuming plastic.
