CounterCurrents: World Hunger Increasing For The First Time In 100 Years

Dear Friend,

The number of people going to bed on an empty stomach are increasing, for the first time in 100 years. The number of people suffering from malnutrition worldwide rose to 815 million in 2016, rising by 38 million from the year before. According to a new report co-signed by five United Nations agencies and charities, and made public by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAOUN) on Friday, this was the first such year-to-year increase in a century.

58 Asian human rights defenders, including the Chairpersons of the National Human Rights Commissions of: Indonesia, Nepal, Timor Leste, and the Philippines,  converged in the global human rights city of Gwangju, called what's going on against the Rohingyas in Myanmar a genocide and called upon the government of Myanmar to end it immediately.

Shamsul Islam argues that the genocide of Rohingyas is not a stand alone incident. It is happening across South Asia albeit at a lesser intensity with the connivance of India's Hindutva fanatics

With climate change hitting hard,  U.S military is finding a new job, that of homeland security. This is a “war” that won’t have a name — not yet, not in the Trump era, but it will be no less real for that.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. Beyond Harvey And Irma: Militarizing Homeland Security In The Climate-Change Era
by Michael T Klare

Think of this as the new face of homeland security: containing the damage to America’s seacoasts, forests, and other vulnerable areas caused by extreme weather events made all the more frequent and destructive thanks to climate change. This is a “war” that won’t have a name — not yet, not in the Trump era, but it will be no less real for that.
