REMINDER: PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY

Tuesday, February 5, 2008 is the Massachusetts Presidential Primary Election.

Members of all political parties and unenrolled voters have the opportunity to have their voices heard this Tuesday in Massachusetts. It is important that we make this election a success by getting as many voters to the polls as possible.

And don't forget to vote for Obama.

Otherwise stay home.

Joking.

Three things a veteran would say they fear to Chelsea Clinton. Osoma, Obama and Yo momma. This was a joke on line.

In regards to being able to vote in Middleboro this past Tuesday. When two of us went to the COA to vote, there was no change in the declaration to vote. This change was mailed back to the town immediately. The kind woman at the COA called the town hall and she was told there are still approximately 8,000 cencus cards sitting there. She also said that the change(s) can't be made for anyone. So, I guess my question is when the town spends money on these forms, printing and postage and the form asks you to make corrections then why can't they at town hall make corrections? Isn't this MORE OF A WASTE OF MONEY OUR TOWN IS SPENDING? So unfortunately, one of us couldn't vote.

Could you please explain this further so that we understand what change you're speaking of?

New bumper stickers ...

I allowed your anonymous comment to provide an opportunity for me to comment.

If you want to talk facts or discuss political positions, that's acceptable.

If you want to toss out stupid comments, go to FAUX news' web site and post them.

I'm about facts and issues, not about nonsense.

I would suggest that you review the budget that the current pResident has submitted.

In the next few days, I'll be posting some assorted commentary about the disgrace that the budget creates.

Take a look at the ever-increasing interest payments on the budget deficit.

Grover Norquist proposed that if the interest payments got high enough, there would be no $$$ left for what the right-wing consider entitlements -- oh, like education? LIHEAP? Alternative energy? Healthcare? Medicare?

This is the legacy you'll leave to your great-grandchildren to pay off.

Hell of a deal!

In regards to not being allowed to vote, one individual was a registered republican which was changed on the census form to unenrolled as she was planning on voting democratic. This is when the woman at the COA called the town hall and said unless she was voting republican she could not vote. Then she was told that no one can make changes on the census form sent out to homes. Why bother sending out census forms stating make changes if they claim by law no changes can be made? They don't specify exactly what changes you can or can not make only that no changes are accepted. MORE WASTED MONEY?

In regards to the stupid comment that was sent you put on, I thought whereas you posted two previous jokes regarding politics it was acceptable. Sorry for the stupidity. Also, I am aware of the budget tossing as well as the 2.7 million dollars the town is to be receiving. Where is that two million going? Town employee benefit packages or to the school, library, and COA where it is much needed. I also read that Govenor Patrick is anti the Middleboro Casino. Maybe he is NOW THINKING. Then again, maybe he is seeking a cabinet post should Obama win the election and leave the state.

Dear Anonymous,
regarding 'jokes,' I had intended to address veterans' issues in greater depth at some future date - at least prior to the November election.
Let's look around at how this pResident has shortchanged not only veterans, but active military.
Why must Middleboro vets travel to Rhode Island or W. Roxbury or Quincy, when there is a complex in Brockton?
Why must Middleboro taxpayers subsidize veterans' healthcare through our Veterans' Agent?
They are entitled to care, coverage and support, but why isn't this Administration funding it?
Rumsfeld epitomized war on the cheap and screw the returning heroes.
Hillary seems no more a threat than the clowns in office now. Check her voting record and consider facts instead of right-wing propaganda.
I've never seen an electorate so willing to accept lies or reluctant to do any research. No wonder the Europeans think we're uninformed.
And maybe these are issues that should be addressed in greater depth on the nemasket forum. Have you checked it out?

No, I have not yet gotten into the Nemasket forum. I was hoping you would have some answer regarding the census changes. I too am sorry for the gentleman asked to leave the meeting at the library. Seems like there's still too many Chiefs and fewer Indians left in town.

Dear Anonymous,

Regarding changes on the census forms: Funny you should mention this!

For some reason, we didn't receive our form this year, so it was reviewed and signed by my partner in the Town Clerk's Office.

I can't comment on what information can or cannot be corrected on the form, but I can tell you that after motor voter and HAVA, the rules are confusing for voters.

And moving the Primary so quickly added to the confusion and of course, changed the date to amend your voter registration.

I have spoken to voters who signed the Recall Petitions and were not registered. A number insisted they registered through motor voter.

Others indicated that both spouses mailed the forms at the same time, but one got lost.

A number of us have discussed a 'citizens' group for purposes of educating voters. One of the considerations was that the Town Moderator might address the group and explain all the proceedures used during town meeting. But there were other things to be discussed as well that folks don't understand, maybe didn't learn in school, or maybe they're transplants from other states.

As you know, nothing is more important to me than voting and participating. And I'm truly sorry you were unable to vote in the Primary.

Thank you for your response. Where as you are running for selectman, maybe you can inquire why census forms are mailed out stating to make any corrections then to be told by law nothing can be changed by an individual being the head of household. A blank form was given out at the COA to fill out and they said will be turned into the town hall to change the voter status from republican to unenrolled. Hopefully, before next election this matter will be corrected. HIGHLY DOUBTFUL where they claim they still haven't done 8,000 census forms yet. DO WHAT? If no changes can be made, why review them? Why waste taxpayers money to send out census forms, printing, etc? GOOD LUCK IN THE ELECTION

My understanding is that the 'Annual Town Census' is mandated by state law, unlike the national census that is mandated in the Constitution.

It assists the town in numerous things, like projecting school population and enrollment for the next school year.

The data produced from the forms is used to generate a book that lists town residents by voting precinct and alphabetically.

Essentially, it's a street listing of registered and unregistered voters that's available to you later in the year for a nominal cost. Last year, it cost $8.

If you wanted to ensure that all of your neighbors were registered to vote or conduct a voter registration drive, the information is available in an easily digested format.

(Certain groups are omitted.)

Unless they have changed the law, didn't it used to be that when you voted in a Presidential primary, your party enrollment couldn't be changed until AFTER the election?

If that's still the case, your enrollment won't be changed until after November.

As I said, VERY CONFUSING!

I attended a voter registration workshop conducted by MassVote at Northeastern.

You might want to check out their website:
http://www.massvote.org/

They haven't answered your specific question about switching parties, but they have some good information.

Once again, thank you for your input. You are very well informed and an asset to this town. Hopefully come April this town will cast their votes for you and then WE WILL SEE CHANGE, CONCERN and the BEST INTEREST OF THE TAXPAYERS demonstrated.
