The CFPB web site is worth reviewing to understand how sorely needed these protections are.
This is a big week for consumer protection. The Senate is holding a hearing
on the nomination for director of the Consumer Financial Protection
Bureau (CFPB). So far, the Senate has refused to vote to confirm
(or reject) CFPB Director Richard Cordray.
A group of Senators has threatened to block any candidate's appointment as CFPB director unless the agency is dramatically weakened. 43 Senators want to cut the Bureau's budget and undermine its authority and effectiveness. It's time to tell the Senate to declare its strong support for current CFPB Director Richard Cordray. Make no mistake: what we're facing is an attempt to gut the CFPB, not fix it. It's important that your representatives hear from you. Please take action now. Tell your Senators to support the CFPB and allow an up or down vote on this nomination. The alternative is to open the door to more of what the CFPB is working hard to prevent -- abusive and deceptive lending practices like those that fed the foreclosure crisis, saddling millions of Americans with unmanageable debt. Please sign the petition by Americans for Financial Reform (AFR), the coalition of consumer and civil rights groups, of which we are a member. Please ask your Senators to confirm Cordray and let the consumer watchdog do its job! Thank you. |
