Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) is a shelter system that kills one third of its animals, infects 100% of them with preventable disease, and abuses and terminates whistleblowing volunteers.
Part of the city's charade in feigning transparency is a yearly Board of Directors meeting. AC&C Board of Directors are all chosen "at the pleasure" of the mayor -- meaning all these people answer to Bloomberg and rubber stamp all policies. To show how little they care about public opinion, the board meetings are held for one hour in the middle of a workday. You can't even easily find the legally required public posting of the board meeting on the AC&C website -- the only way we found it was by searching their site for "board meeting": http://bit.ly/127MoHr.
This is one of the very few times AC&C management, (and the Department of Health officials who allow them to continue abusing animals) are forced to listen to members of the public.

Clide was found with his friend Bonny in a yard and brought together to the Manhattan Center. Both were lost and scared and wanted only one thing...to stay in their kennel. It took quite a bit of convincing to get them out but they did eventually. Clide is really a big guy. He walks cautiously and camly on the leash, eliminates on the way and presses his body against mine when he seems unsure of his next step. At times, he looks and puts his big head on his companion's chest. Clide is sociable, likes to be caressed and talked too. He was probably a yard dog but does not seem to mind dogs, people and children saying hello through the Center gate. Clide does not seem very interested in other dogs but does not mind their presence at all. As he meets Bonny in the yard, he just salutes her politely but voids next to where she did. I guess, their way to communicate...Clide is a beautiful dog, a Rotweiler with a twist...He has amazing markings, sweet eyes and gentle manners despite his size. It's hoped Bonny and Clide can find a home together where they can roam again, safe and loved. If they must be fostered/adopted individually that would be great too! These wonderful dogs need you to step up for them! You will fall in love.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper 965187 Clide came in to the shelter as a stray, but was accompanied by another dog (A965376). He was calm and relaxed during handling, but became distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Clide did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Clide was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Squeeze 2 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish's movement. Dog's body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.
For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go unnoticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.See More

Misty is a spayed 5-year-old beauty whose former owners had her for the past 2 years. Misty lived with 3 adult humans and some other cats, but when "family changes" came a-calling, no one was willing to take Misty's back. This innocent loving girl was dumped into the ACC as if she didn't matter at all, and from the ACC point of view, she doesn't. Misty is just one more animal in their cage. Misty has been reduced to a name that might not really be her own, an ID number of A0965877, and a slot on the euth list tonight. Please make sure that Misty matters to someone again, by saving her life tonight.

Baby is a 10-year-old girl who has spent all of that time living with 4 adults, and she thought she had it made. Baby loved them and they loved Baby, but they didn't love Baby enough to take her with them when they moved. Whoever took Baby to the ACC and gave her up, would have been told that there was a chance this lovely lady could die in a few days' time, if no one else adopted her. That person paid the owner surrender fee and left a shattered Baby to face whatever fate had in store for her, all by her lonesome. Baby carries a New Hope rating because this lovely girl who used to hide from strangers in her old home, was overwhelmed with fear when strangers began menacing her in what we would call her "behavior evaluation." Baby is counting on a rescue to save her life tonight.

**CALLING ALL ANGELS: FELV+ JOE NEEDS IMMEDIATE RESCUE!**
Joe is breaking my heart tonight. Just look at that photo. He has wounds on his neck, a UTI, and on top of that, he has tested FELV+. Plum is another FELV+ cat on the list tonight, we should get both of these sweet boys out of here, maybe they could go together! Joe is going to need IMMEDIATE medical attention, and he needs to get out of the shelter AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please give Joe the second chance at life he desperately needs and completely deserves. We are his last hope. Please share Joe widely tonight, and if you have a home with no other pets or other cats with FELV, consider opening your home to him. You are his only hope tonight. Please save Joe.

Slick is an 8-month-old kitten who knows what it's like to suffer at the hands of so-called human beings. This sweet little girl came to the shelter on 5/20 with an old scabby wound that may have been a burn. She has been receiving some treatment from the ACC, but she also caught the shelter cold from them. Which is why this little girl is hoping that someone will step up for her tonight, hoping that she does not have to suffer the ultimate indignity of the way animals go out at the ACC. Slick may not be a cat with much history, but the only way she has a future is if we find one for her tonight.

**FELV+ PLUM HAS BEEN GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE -- AND HE GOT A PERFECT SCORE ON HIS BEHAVIOR EVAL!**
Poor Plum thought he was getting out of the shelter, until he was retested for FIV/FELV and it came back positive for FELV. Plum is going to have to be considered a special needs kitty that will have to go to a special home that will know how to care for him, and he will need to be with other FELV positive cats, or be the only pet in the home. Poor Plum is really getting the short end of the stick lately. But even through it all, this boy is STILL sweet as a PLUM! He earned a PERFECT score on his behavior evaluation, a 15 out of 15. He’s a headbutter, he purrs and loves affection. Please, if you are able to care for Plum and address his medical needs, please take this boy home tonight. I've heard of many FELV+ cats living long and happy lives, just like any other cat would, so give Plum a chance at a long and happy life too, because this is his last chance and he desperately needs YOU to step up for him. Please share Plum widely tonight, he needs to have the best possible chance at finding his forever home.

Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Flex is 15 years old and was surrendered to the Manhattan ACC with his housemate Isis :((( It's almost impossible to believe that two senior family pets were brought to a kill shelter and left; but, the reality is they were. The other reality is, Flex is on the destroy list tonight which adds insult to injury. He should not have to have his life ended according to a schedule. He shouldn't have to die feeling betrayed and scared. Flex is a great dog with an impressive SAFFER of all 1's and 2's. Flex has given his devotion to a family for a decade and a half, please save his life tonight. Share Flex for a foster or adopter, through the public adoption site, or through a rescue

Helper 965588 Flex was surrendered by his owner of fifteen years. He lived with three adults and another dog that is currently in the shelter with him (A966048). Although he has lived with another dog, flex may growl or bark at other dogs. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Flex was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Flex was not interested in toys or rawhide. He was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1 . Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish's movement. Dog's body is soft and loose, eyes soft,. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with soft body, long lip and ears relaxed

IS LEARNING THAT LOVE IS WONDERFUL!! PLEASE SAVE HER!!!
Lyka is an elegant young female dressed in a well groomed latte and cream coat. She is trim but could use a few more pounds. She had a littler not that long ago. As our time together went by, she started to relax, stopped trembling and we were able to go for a good walk around the block. Lyka trots nicely, sometimes pulling a little. She eliminates on the way. She walks a little faster if a pushy dog is met and sometimes gets excited when a nice one is encountered. In the yard, leash free, she rather explores the area, wondering likely why the place does not look anything like home....Lyka has a puzzled look on her face... Eventually, she gets used to the sound of my voice and my presence and comes when I call her, even putting her forelegs on my lap for a kiss and caresses. Some dogs need more time to transition and Lyka is doing just that... Lyka needs a home to call her home and a master or family to belong to and love. She is at the Manhattan Care Center dreaming to be yours. My Animal ID # is A0965967. Click her photo for all info on how to save her. Please hurry! ~

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper dog A0965713 Lyka walked calmly on leash for her relief walk and may be house trained - toileted immediately when taken outside. She was shy but friendly during the assessment - low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Lyka was calm and relaxed during handling but became very fearful while playing Tag, appearing to be sensitive and very reactive to her surroundings. She growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl assessment but was easy to handle when chewing on toys. Lyka showed some concerning behavior during rawhide assessment - stiffening or growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. She was cautious when approaching the helper dog, but when close reacted to the other dog's quick movement by barking back, getting excited with hackles raised. Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog's mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog may lick hand. Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Dog - dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long or neutral.

✿ FOSTER or ADOPTER needed so this FRIENDLY 10 MONTH OLD PUP CAN LIVE!!! ✿
Husky was the picture of heartbreak when his family dropped him off in Brooklyn’s high kill shelter, but he still did VERY WELL on his behavior eval. He’s a slender pittie mix who hasn’t even celebrated his 1st birthday yet. Husky loves people and craves being touched by humans, and at 10 months old, would make a wonderful addition to a committed and dog-savvy family. Fosters must apply to and be approved by a New Hope rescue -- click on Husky's photo to get help with how to apply. Please hurry! ~

✿Ú¿Ú°Ú¿ WAUNA✿Ú¿Ú°Ú¿ "Please don’t be put off by my colour, I could love you as well as the rest, For my heart it is pure and loving and the love that it holds is the best "✿Ú¿Ú°Ú¿ Pretty two year old Wauna seems to have the perky curiosity of a puppy. Her healthy weight and coat seem to suggest she was someone's beloved pet in the very recent past. If Wauna had known the comforts of a loving home, it would explain why she was friendly, yet a bit tentative upon her arrival at the chaotic shelter. She misses home life, and longs to be part of a family once again. Please help us find a foster or forever family for Wauna. Share her, and click on her pic if you need help with how to foster or adopt her yourself! ~

(¸.•´ (¸.•` ¤ OREO is back on the list :-(((
A volunteer writes: What a wonderful name for this dog. I'm sure, the first thing I would have thought of too, with his sharp black and white patched coat overall, is Oreo and nothing else. What charming fella this doggie is. Affectionate, irresistably playful, quick on the pick up of positive traits ... Oreo is the total package, a dog a lover and caretaker would be proud to share their lives with, and think of him as your companion and good friend. Oreo did pull some on our walk, but nothing I would say isn't something, with the right training and tender care, could be dealt with, for positive results. This dog is perkie and even the charmer, I'm certain you'll be happy to spend your time with Oreo. Won't you please make the choice to come into our Brooklyn Care Center today and meet with him. For sure, Oreo would love to meet, and come home with you today and be your loving doggie for the rest of his life. By far, Oreo is better than any "Oreo cookie" you've ever had.
Please click on Oreo's pic if you need help with how to foster or adopt him. Please hurry!

Helper Dog: A0963998
Bronx pulls hard on the leash and was sociable toward the handler during the assessment - soft body, low wag. He was calm and relaxed during handling and when playing tag with assessor. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Bronx showed minimal interest in toys and rawhides, but rushed in confidently towards the helper dog; when close, growls and snarls.
Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body.
Tag: 1. Dog stands with his tail low and wagging, and comes toward the Assessor in a friendly manner when the Assessor ceases moving.
Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back.
Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, soft body. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Dog-dog: 4. Dog charges the helper dog while growling and snarling.

Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.See More
