Shouldn't we at least know where our elected officials stand in an open and vigorous debate?
Last week, I spoke on the House floor to introduce a resolution directing the
president to remove U.S. troops from Iraq within 30 days or before the end of
this year, except those essential to the protection of our diplomatic facilities
and personnel. This special resolution will require the House to take up this
bill within 15 calendar days.
Simply put, Congress has not done its job when it comes to recent wars. I
don't know what the final vote on my resolution will be, but at the very least
Congress should have an open and vigorous debate. We must step up to the plate
when American military personnel are being asked to put their lives in harm’s
way.
With over 700 troops having been deployed to Iraq over the last few
weeks, we can’t wait any longer.
Our servicemen and women deserve Congress’
attention. No matter the outcome, it is crucial to our democracy and our role in
the world that we do not deploy our troops lightly or without considered action
from Congress.
Thank you,
Jim
