Downwinders want Cape voters to have say on Pilgrim

After achieving success in Brewster, the Cape Downwinders group announced Thursday a campaign to place advisory questions on ballots in all Cape towns this spring to ask voters whether they'll call on Gov. Deval Patrick to request that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission shut down the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

Citing a lack of assurances about public safety in the area in the event of a nuclear accident, the group is working to collect the 10 registered voter signatures needed to submit the campaign to local boards of selectmen, who would determine whether to put the advisory question on the ballot.

The Brewster Board of Selectmen approved the petition on Monday, according to Cape Downwinders, which said boards in Wellfleet, Harwich and Dennis will take up the questions at meetings next week.

Officials in Falmouth have voted to consider the question while they seek more information, the group said, and Mashpee, Provincetown and other Cape towns will review the issue in the next few weeks.

Last year, the NRC granted Entergy another 20-year license to continue operations at the Pilgrim plant.
