The northeast is
digging itself out from one of the largest blizzards ever to hit the region.
Communities in Massachusetts saw as much as 34 inches of snow, and the storm
broke into the top 5 snow events in Boston’s history. Right after the
blizzard struck, WCVB chief meteorologist Harvey Leonard went on air and gave a
clear and compelling explanation of the connections between climate change and
this deadly storm. He deserves thanks for braving the attacks of
climate deniers to tell his viewers the facts about global warming.
If we support meteorologists like Leonard who are
willing to connect the dots, we will encourage them to become true climate
leaders. Please watch Harvey Leonard explain how climate change is
making our weather more extreme:
Broadcast meteorologists have a professional
responsibility to tell their viewers about the ways climate change is making our
weather system more extreme. In fact, three of the six largest snow storms ever
to hit Boston have all occurred in the last decade, but few meteorologists are
willing to explain the reason why: fossil fuel pollution has heated up our
climate, and additional moisture and energy in our atmosphere is causing more
powerful storms. Many weather reporters are afraid to speak out,
concerned about backlash from their producers, or worried about pushback from
climate change deniers in their audience.
Over the
weekend, Harvey Leonard bucked the trend, and informed his viewers about the
connections between climate change and this storm. Harvey Leonard is one of the
most influential weathercasters in the nation, considered the "dean" of Boston
weathercasters and a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.
